JOKE of the WEEK: An RGV Texas father called his three sons Paco, Manuel and Jesus into the kitchen and asked, "which one of you pushedthe outhouse into the river?" "Not I" replied Paco. "Nor me" Maunel said. "It wasn't me either father"said Jesus. So the father says "I want to tell you a story about George Washington. One day GeorgeWashington's father gave him a hatchet. Then, George Washington chopped down his fathers’ favoritecherry tree. George Washington's father said “George, who chopped down my favorite cherry tree?” andGeorge Washington said “father, I can not tell a lie, it was me.” So George Washington's father huggedand kissed his son for being honest with him. Then Jesus lowered his head and said, "Father, I like GeorgeWashington, can not tell a lie, I pushed the outhouse into the river." The father took off his belt and startedbeating him. After he got the beating Jesus said, "But father, I was honest like George Washington." Hisfather replied “Claro que si, Jesus, but George Washington's father wasn't in the cherry tree when hechopped it down."

QUOTE for the DAY:

The great enemy of communication is the illusion of it.” - William H. White

STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW Feb. 24, 1836: 3,000 Mexicans attack 182 Texans at the Alamo, beginning a battle thatlasted 13 days. The conflict actually began on the 23rd when the garrison's sentriesspotted the advance of Santa Anna's Cavalry units. Colonel William B. Travis ordered awithdrawal into the Alamo compound. In a parley with Mexican Colonel Juan Almonte, the Texians were ordered to surrender or be put to the sword. Travis answers theMexican's terms with a volley from the 18-pounder. The next day the Mexicans began thesiege, beginning a battle that turned a Spanish mission into a shrine known and reveredall over the world. Mysteries, legends and myths surrounding the conflict still fascinateand trouble the history of the event, not the least of which focuses on Davy Crockett, “king of the wildfrontier,” who famously died defending the Alamo. The legends have overshadowed the man. David deCrocketagne was born March 17, 1786 near the Nolichucky River in Greene County, N. East Tennessee. Adescendent of Ulster-Scots, he was the fifth of nine children born to John and Rebecca Hawkins Crockett. In 1806 he married Polly Finley. He and Polly had three children, John, William and Margaret. In 1813, heenlisted in the 2nd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Riflemen. Polly died shortly after he returned from the CreekIndian war. He then married a widow, Elizabeth Patton who gave him three more children, Robert, Rebeckah and Matilda. He was elected to congress in 1826, fought with Andrew Jackson over the Indian removal Act, was defeated in the nextelection, re-elected in 1832 and was a staunch opponent of wasteful government spending, famously opposing a bill to helpa Naval widow: “We have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; butas members of Congress we have no right so to appropriate a dollar of the public money.” He then offered one week of hisown money and he challenged the other representatives to do the same....Later, angered over Martin Van Buren’s electionto president...told congress to “go to hell, I’m going to Texas!” He did, but intended to offer his military service there inreturn for 4,600 acres of land. Davy was a farmer, skilled hunter, outstanding frontiersman, scout, state legislator, U.S.Congressman, author, good family man, leader of men, and politician with integrity, and Alamo hero, becoming theepitome of the rough, unwashed, dangerous West of Jacksonian America. Many accounts claim he entertained the Alamodefenders playing the violin (or a fiddle called “the Devil’s Box), also intended to taunt the Mexicans. Santa Anna hadordered a playing of the bugle call “Deguello” promising no quarter to the defenders. Crockett picked up the melody onhis fiddle and played the melody back at them in what became known as the “Deguello de Crockett.”...Thanks to WaltDisney, his legend grew even more popular in the 1950's when a three part TV drama starring Fess Parker was re-editedinto a feature movie. (My late cousin, David Crockett Ayers, was a direct descendant of Davy through his mother Sarah Crockett...the poor guy had to go through highschool with his friendsteasingly and constantly singing, The film’s title song, “Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier.” - Ed)

ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY MINUTE Reprinted from the November 2016 Rotarian.

The Rotary Club of Zamboanga City East (in the Philippines) meets in a hotel just 10 to 15 minutes away fromDivisoria, a barangay (barrio) with a population of 9,000. But residents of remote areas of that communitylacked easy access to potable water until the club donated and installed two manually operated water pumpsat a cost of about $200 each in February through its El Agua Es Vida (Water Is Life) initiative. “We thoughtof the plight of the residents there, especially the children,” says the club’s immediate past president, ArthurNogas. The project has inspired other organizations to continue the effort, Nogas says.
