Dear Friends,“Invite them in!” Last Saturday, I had the

pleasure of attending a Gala dinner where my sister Katie and her husband Andy were honored for their philanthropic activity in the archdiocese of Chicago, especially at their local school, Saint Luke in River Forest. At the event, also being honored was long time educator at the school. She received the “Heart

of the School” award. As she was introduced, the principal spoke of her wisdom and the first lesson he learned from her when he join the school community.. He said she told him, “Invite them in!” What great advice! Isn’t that what Jesus did? He invited and encouraged and supported and challenged.

In the Gospel today, Jesus invites Nicodemus, the one who out of fear comes to him at night, in darkness so that no one would know. He invites and encourages. He reminds and promises. He utters the often-quoted line, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” The only Son came to invite - and to encourage the invited to go and invite others themselves. And we have a great offer to encourage others to join: the promise of eternal life. His invitation to Nicodemus plants a seed in his heart. Later we will see Nicodemus again, standing at the foot of the cross.

So we must hear Jesus’ call, and that call will require personal conversion. Lent is a great time to focus on that call and the conversion the call entails. At Saint John Berchmans we will hear and respond to the call to conversion as our little ones celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time this week, and next week we have our parish wide communal reconciliation service.

I hope you are entering into the sprit of Lent. If you know of others who have been away, invite them to this community. Remind them that the Church needs them, that God loves them, and the perhaps they need the Church. Let’s make it our goal this Lent to make Saint John Berchmans a beacon of hope filled light, welcoming all who live near or travel on the beautiful boulevard that we call our own.

I share with you below a thought provoking text, which will help us to live and evaluate our Lent, meaningfully and joyfully, personally and in community.

Great things are happening here. You and I are called to be partners in the greatness of God. As we continue our journey through Lent, let us pray for a renewed to commitment to God and to this wonderful parish. Let each of us look for a way that we can sacrifice of ourselves to serve the Lord with gladness and to help make the great things happen. Let’s hear the invitation, experience conversion a go out and do some inviting!

HOLY THURSDAY ADORATION

On Holy Thursday, we will again have the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament following the 7:30 PM Mass until midnight. By doing this, we fulfill the command of Our Lord to keep watch with him on the eve of his passion. Please consider committing some time to pray with our community in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament before Good Friday.

HOLY THURSDAY BUS PILGRIMAGE

Also on Holy Thursday, following the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Saint John Berchmans will continue the beautiful tradition of visiting the Blessed Sacrament in seven churches around Chicago. Transportation will be provided, so reserve your spot on the bus by signing up in the vestibule. Suggested donation is $5, payable on the bus.

Our bilingual reconciliation & Taizé prayer service will be held on Tuesday, March 20th at 7pm. Lent is the perfect time to examine our consciences and receive the Sacrament of Penance in preparation to celebrate the joy of the Easter season. Join us in this

service filled with song, prayer, and mercy.

WOMEN’S FAITH CIRCLE:

The Women’s Faith Circle will meet on Tuesday, March 13 in the school chapel beginning at 7 p.m. You are invited to share some quiet, prayerful time in a faith group while focusing your attention on spiritual growth. The circle is

LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT – TOILETRY DRIVE

As a Lenten Service Project, the community of Saint John Berchmans will collect toiletries

for distribution to shelters in Chicago. Please remember to bring your small and sample sized toiletries to all Masses the weekend of March 17/18. Also, join us at the Soup with Substance on Friday, March 23rd to sort them with other members of this community.

Queridos Amigos,“¡Invítalos!” El sábado pasado tuve el placer

de asistir a una cena de gala donde mi hermana Katie y su esposo Andy fueron honrados por su actividad filantrópica en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago, especialmente en su escuela local, Saint Luke en River Forest. En este evento también fue honrada una educadora de mucho tiempo en la escuela. Ella recibió el premio “Corazón de la Escuela”. Cuando

el director la presentó, el habló de su sabiduría y de la primera lección que aprendió de ella cuando se unió a la comunidad escolar. Ella le dijo: “¡Invítalos!” ¡Qué gran consejo! ¿No es eso lo que hizo Jesús? Invitó, alentó, apoyó y desafió.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús invita a Nicodemo, quien, por miedo viene a él en la noche, en la oscuridad para que nadie lo sepa. Él invita y alienta. Él recuerda y promete. Él pronuncia la frase citada con frecuencia: “Tanto amó Dios al mundo que le entregó a su Hijo único, para que todo el que cree en él no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna”. El único Hijo vino a invitar y animar a los invitados para ir e invitar a otros. Y tenemos una gran oferta para animar a otros a unirse: la promesa de la vida eterna. Su invitación a Nicodemo planta una semilla en su corazón. Más adelante veremos a Nicodemo de nuevo, parado al pie de la cruz.

Entonces necesitamos escuchar el llamado de Jesús, y ese llamado requerirá una conversión personal. La Cuaresma es un gran momento para enfocarnos en esa llamada y la conversión que esta implica. En San Juan Berchmans escucharemos y responderemos a la llamada a la conversión mientras nuestros pequeños celebran el Sacramento de la Reconciliación por primera vez esta semana, y la próxima semana tenemos nuestro amplio servicio de Reconciliación comunitaria.

Espero que usted entre en el espíritu de la Cuaresma. Si conoce a personas que han estado alejados, invítelos a esta comunidad. Recuérdeles que la Iglesia los necesita, que Dios los ama, y quizás ellos necesitan a la Iglesia. Hagamos que nuestro objetivo de esta Cuaresma sea hacer de San Juan Berchmans un faro de luz lleno de esperanza, dando la bienvenida a todos los que viven cerca o viajan en el hermoso bulevar que llamamos nuestro. Comparto con ustedes a continuación un texto que invita a la reflexión, que nos ayudará a vivir y evaluar nuestra Cuaresma, de manera significativa y alegre, personal y en comunidad.

Grandes cosas están sucediendo aquí. Usted y yo estamos llamados a ser colaboradores en la grandeza de Dios. Mientras continuamos nuestro viaje durante la Cuaresma, recemos por un compromiso renovado con Dios y con esta maravillosa parroquia. El Jueves Santo, tendremos nuevamente la Exposición del Santísimo Sacramento después de la Misa de 7:30 P.M. hasta la medianoche. De esta manera, cumplimos con el mandato de Nuestro Señor de vigilar con él en la víspera de su pasión. Por favor considere dedicar cierto tiempo para orar con nuestra comunidad en presencia del Santísimo Sacramento antes del Viernes Santo.

PEREGRINACIÓN DEL JUEVES SANTO

También el Jueves Santo, después de la Misa vespertina de la Cena del Señor, San Juan Berchmans continuará la hermosa tradición de visitar el Santísimo Sacramento en siete Iglesias alrededor de Chicago. El transporte será proporcionado, así que reserve su lugar en el autobús firmando en el vestíbulo. La donación sugerida es $5, pagadero en el autobús.

SJB Eagles are Soaring!Graduates from SJB continue to make great achievements!

Gabrielle Holden (SJB Class of 2017) was placed on the High Honor Roll (GPA of 3.5 or higher) for the first semester at Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart.

Julian Gonzalez (SJB Class of 2014) received Honors with Distinctions at St. Ignatius College Prep and will be attending University of Chicago this coming fall.
