The Committee Members of the Hatfield

Woodhouse Working Men‟s Club would

like to offer their deepest gratitude and thanks

to the late Mr Cyril Brown who bequeathed

£2000 to the club.

Cyril Brown, a local man in his eighties, enjoyed

a game of pool at the working men‟s club with

his friend Dave Green. He did this regularly,

every Monday night for over 10 years.

Some of the committee members described

Cyril as being a friendly, well liked person who

never had a bad word to say.

Pictured above : Cyril‟s brother - Mr John

Brown, David Green and Mr Len Coates

THE FUND RAISING EVENING HELD

IN THE BAY HORSE on Monday the 7th of

February raised a grand total of £260. This

towards our continuing campaign. Thanks go to

Andy the Landlord of the Bay, to all that

supported the evening, to all who donated

prizes etc ; to Pete Knight who never sat down

all evening selling raffle tickets and much much,

more. Finally to Vicky Bodman leader of

AMOROSO (Classical Guitar Trio) who

entertained us regally throughout the evening,

they were wonderful ! And, not forgetting Pete

Wright our Quiz master, Thanks Pete.

Gordon Harper.

RE Week at Travis.

The week beginning January 24th saw the start of our special RE

week at Hatfield Travis Infant School. This year, our focus was

“The Bible- God‟s Holy Handbook”. The children took part in a

variety of activities, including an exciting treasure hunt and

working with a theatre group. The week ended with a family

collective workshop.

The reporters have shared their experiences of the week.

There are 66 stories in the bible. The stories have been squished into

one book. –Luke.

I coloured a picture of Goliath. Next thing I did was a treasure hunt

of the books in the New Testament. - Jack.

When we were on the bible hunt, we found out that there are 66

books in the bible. Some of the stories we read were Joseph and his

amazing coat, Daniel and Goliath, Noah’s Ark, Daniel and the lions

and the lost sheep.- Jessica.

We did some dances with Chip from Barnabus Theatre Group. All of

Year 2 children did a picture of themselves on the computer. Also all

of the school did a poster. –Alexander.

Chip gave us a number each, I was number 1 and it was like a

workstation for children. Joshua built a school with his friends. –

Logan.

We sewed Joseph’s coat of wonderful colours and we coloured his coat. It was fun. –Abigail.

Some people did a poster about God’s Holy

Handbook. – Layton.

Our home project was doing a poster to do with the

bible, it is God’s Holy Handbook, it is a very old book.

–Olivia.

In collective worship, we learnt about the miracles that

Jesus did, like turning water into wine and walking on

water. – Samuel. The posters the children have completed as part

of the home project are wonderful and are on

display throughout the school.

Mrs P Cousins.

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CITIZENS

ADVICE BUREAU

Advice Column Since my divorce three years ago I‟ve been on income support and bringing up my two

children alone. The youngest child is coming up to her seventh birthday and I‟ve had a letter telling me I will no longer be able to get income support and will have to look for

work. I‟m really worried as I haven‟t worked for a few years now and don‟t know how I

could fit a job round my children, even if I could get one. Can you help?

The benefit rules have recently changed so that if you are a single parent who currently gets Income

Support and your youngest child has turned seven, you will now have to move to Jobseeker's

Allowance (JSA) if you are able to work.

The Department of Work and Pensions should write to you eight weeks before your child is due to

turn seven, inviting you to an interview to apply for JSA.

However, there are some protections built into the new rules to take account of the particular

difficulties lone parents are likely to face in juggling work with the needs of their children.

You will only be expected to be available for work during your children‟s normal school hours. And

you may be able to refuse work if you cannot find suitable childcare or the childcare costs would be

too high.

If you cannot work because you are sick or disabled, you may be able to switch to Employment and

Support Allowance (ESA). If you get Carer's Allowance or look after a child who gets Disability

Living Allowance, you may continue to get Income Support.

If you need support to start applying for jobs,

JobCentre Plus offers a range of services to help

you get back into work. For more information

contact your local JobCentre Plus office. Go to:

www.direct.gov.uk.

Allowance, see Benefits for people looking for

ANIMAL CARE

FOR THE FUTURE

TORTOISES AND HIBERNATION If you are lucky enough to own a pet tortoise and

they have been in hibernation then now is the time

to prepare for them waking up. Following are a

few tips to help you avoid problems at this

vulnerable time for your pet.

Before hibernation be certain that the

particular species you have is ok to hibernate as

some species do not. If you are going ahead make

sure the tortoise is healthy and of a safe weight. If

you are at all unsure on any of these points book

an appt with your vet for a pre-hibernation check.

Never hibernate a tortoise that is ill or

underweight.

The maximum length of time to hibernate

your tortoise should be 3 months as longer could

cause a problem.

In spring as the hibernation temperature

begins to approach 10C remove the hibernating

box from its winter quarters and put it in a warm

place. After an hour remove the tortoise from the

box and place it in a warm bright environment.

As soon as it is fully awake offer it a drink.

Place the entire tortoise in a washing-up

bowl or similar container filled with warm water

about 1” deep and let it soak for 20-30 mins. The

tortoise should take a long drink and will very

often urinate and defecate in the water. Give them

daily soakings for a week or so.

It is vital that they are now kept at optimum

temperature so put them into their tortoise house

under the heat lamp.

Offer some food as soon as they begin to

move about. Most will begin to eat the same day,

but some can take a further 72 hours to start.

All tortoises should very definitely feed

within ONE WEEK of emerging from hibernation.

If they do not there is either a health or husbandry

problem and you should contact your vet without

delay.

Always remember that tortoises are cold blooded

creatures that rely on their owners to provide the

right conditions for them to survive. If you would

like further information or advice please ring the

surgery and we would be glad to help or visit

www.tortoisetrust.org.

Review of Performances by Junior Phoenix – Jack and the Bean

Stalk and Horror at Hellfire Hall 30/01/2011

We arrived at Hatfield village hall on Sunday to watch

performances from the Junior Phoenix drama group, what a pleasant and entertaining afternoon we had. The small children

performed the pantomime Jack and the Bean Stalk, where we

thoroughly enjoyed cheering the goodies and booing the very

big scary loud giant. All the children were amazing and acted

their parts and dance with enjoyment and confidence. We loved

Jack the principle boy who put her heart into the part, the little

chicken when he started singing the Birdie Song, and of course

we had to join in as well. The whole cast were a pleasure and

joy to watch – a wonderful performance.

The second half of the show was performed by the older

children and was a wonderful thrilling play to watch. We were

wondering if the owners of Hellfire hall would get there evil way

and get rid of their lovely little niece, Miss Jenifer Sweetly; but of

course good over power bad in the end. We loved the elegant

Dancing of Tristan Trustworthy in his disguise as Judd Dullard

and congratulate the entire cast on their acting abilities. The

dancing in Monster mash and Thriller made us want to get up

on the stage and join in with them. Congratulations must also

go to the crew for the excellent lighting, sound and scenery.

These children are the actors, actresses and entertainers of the

future and we need to nurture their talents. To stand up in

front of an audience even for adults is a feat in itself, but these

children were full of confidence and you could see by their faces

they all enjoyed entertaining. I stand up and applaud them all,

what a wonderful afternoon we had.

THE DUNSVILLE PARISH PLAN

The 16th January 2009 saw the start of what has now become the Dunsville

Parish Plan. A meeting was held with Hatfield Town Council to seek the views of

Dunsville residents on the possible development of a Community-Led Plan.

A committee of local people was formed to head the project and a questionnaire

was posted to every resident in Dunsville asking their views on how they would

like to see the future of Dunsville progress.

The questionnaire covered a range of topics including Crime and Safety,

Development of the Area, Environmental Services, Traffic and Road Safety, Public

Transport, Recreation & Leisure and other issues concerning the area.

The response to the questionnaire was well over average, with everyone being

given the opportunity to make their views known.

The Dunsville Parish Plan has now been completed and is available at the Library

and other local outlets. Every household in Dunsville will have received an

individual copy.

The plan shows the results of the questionnaire and actions to be taken. It is an

on going document that will change as the residents views change over the years

to come.

East Doncaster Development Trust is preparing for Spring! Community Garden Art Competition

The new Community Garden was created last summer. Volunteers transformed a piece of derelict

ground behind the Resource Centre in Station Road, Dunscroft, into a haven of beauty and

tranquility. Local businesses contributed turf, plants and paving, whilst HMP Lindholme supplied

wooden planters and seating benches. The garden was formally opened with a celebration day in

September. The garden has wintered well, and is open daily for all to enjoy.

The finishing touch will be some locally produced art work to decorate the garden fence. A

competition has been launched by EDDT and Hatfield Visual Arts College, with all primary schools

in DN7 invited to enter pupils‟ work. The winning design will be enlarged and mounted on the fence

in a weatherproof display. The winning school will receive a prize of £50.

Entries should be submitted to HVAC by 1st April.

Spring along to employment through Work Club

EDDT is about to launch a Work Club at its Dunscroft Resource Centre, to help people in DN7

seek and apply for employment. In these difficult times job-seeking can be disheartening, especially if

doing it alone at home. The idea behind Work Clubs is to provide a supportive, comfortable and

friendly environment, where jobseekers can learn from, support and encourage each other, and

access IT facilities, help and training.

For further details of EDDT‟s Work Club please telephone 01302 844844, or call in at the Resource

Centre in Station Road.

Benefits Advice

Spring 2011 will be a worrying and difficult time for many as the economic cuts bite and jobs are

lost. Correct advice on what welfare benefits are

available is more needed than ever, and often now

by people who have no previous experience of

the welfare system.

EDDT is pleased to announce a fully-trained

welfare rights advice volunteer is now offering

free benefits advice sessions at the Resource

Centre in Dunscroft . Drop-in sessions are on Wednesdays, 1-3 pm. Appointments for more

detailed support can be booked for Friday

mornings 10.00am – 12 noon. Please telephone

Eee I do love a “Bit o Brass” !!

Walking through the village recently I was stopped by an older lady

who politely enquired whether I was that bloke called AKA The

Difference, who writes that “little” article every month. I happily

confirmed my identity and we stood on the pavement exchanging war

stories. About 15 minutes in she admitted she had been discussing me

and my references to my life as a single man while in the butchers the

previous weekend. Then she looked me squarely in the eye and grabbed

my arm, pulling me closer, before whispering that I should find myself one

of those “Tyne Brides”. Intrigued, I asked her to explain further and she told me the general

consensus in the meat shop was I should invest some money in one of those „Tyne Brides‟. “Get

thee sen up to Newcastle lad,” she insisted. I didn‟t have the heart to correct her on her

geographical error but it made me smile all day long. Later that night I settled down to watch the

film „Brassed Off‟ staring the late, great Pete Postlethwaite, a film that always stirs my Yorkshire

blood but one night almost saw me take a bit of a good hiding. You see I have a confession to make

- I like Brass Band music!

Back in 1997 love and passion took me to Swansea (why else move to Swansea?). I found myself a decent job, a place to live and had a fine set of mates. One evening I decided to treat my then

girlfriend, let‟s call her Heidi as that was her name, to a night out at the pictures. We followed it up

with a few beers and a curry to round things off, after all, us Yorkshire lads do romance better than

anyone. We entered the cinema to watch „Brassed Off‟ and before the opening credits had finished I

knew I was on a one-way trip to homesickness as I felt my Yorkshire pride stirring deep within me.

As the film progressed I became increasingly melancholy and passionate towards the fate of my

fellow Yorkshireman. I also became aware of a group of blokes sat in front who were beginning to

offer less than complimentary opinions on my Yorkshire brethren.

“The miners deserved everything they got”, “it was never that bad anyway”, “it was over-

exaggerated”, were a few of their observations. It didn‟t end there. “Most of those communities

needed to be ripped apart anyway, it was the only way they were going to learn that socialism was

dead and buried,” was the next barb. I could feel the anger brewing inside me as the comments

continued, just loud enough for everyone to hear. But the straw that broke the camel‟s back came

during the hospital scene as the band play outside Danny‟s hospital window. “Most of them were

asking for it, they hardly worked for years before the strike anyway,” The rest mist descended as at

this point I could stand it no longer. I let go of Heidi‟s hand – the poor girl had been gripping it in

the vain hope of preventing me doing anything stupid – but my mind was made up. I was defending

the honour of my motherland. I leaned over what I thought was a group of four blokes, passionately

explaining that I came from where this film had been made, I had family who had worked down the

pit, that they themselves had probably never done a day‟s work in their lives, and that they were

more than likely middle class shandy-drinking piss pots who should keep their gobs shut about the

miners or I would quite happily take them all outside and knock ten bells of shit out of them. I think

I ended by claiming I would have more problems bathing my dog than handing them a dose of

Yorkshire reality. (At least that was the edited version anyway). The blokes, quite alarmed at my

outburst, fell silent. However, after what seemed like an eternity of whispering, it became apparent

to me that in the dark I had severely miscalculated their numbers. One by one they began to offer

their allegiance until their ranks had swelled to maybe a dozen. Heidi gripped my hand in moral

support, as any girlfriend would, but had already started to fear for my safety as the Welshmen

began to sniff the scent of English blood. The four who I‟d threatened to rearrange raised their fists

in a show of strength usually reserved for a New Zealand Haka. My clock was suddenly ticking, while

on screen Pete Postlethwaite was slowly ebbing away in sympathy in the background.

It was around about this time that something quite amazing happened. As the knot in my stomach

tightened I felt a pair of huge hands resting on my shoulders. A thick South Wales accent then

boomed: “Don‟t you be worrying about a thing boyo, it‟s about time you had some support in this

matter.” Little did I know that sat directly behind me were the Porth Colliery Brass Band from

South Wales who were in Swansea for a competition that weekend. I turned in trepidation only to

witness around 25 huge blokes armed with menacing expressions and an unlikely show of solidarity

for their new Yorkshire cousin. Very calmly one of them explained they would be more than happy

to even up the numbers and that my foes had two options – sit down and keep their opinions to

themselves or clear off. Realising that failure to comply could quite easily result in a good hiding

from a group of older, bigger, angrier bandsman the group decided that maybe this film wasn‟t for

them after all and departed into the Autumn evening.

Tranquillity returned to the cinema and I was now free to blub like a mother at a wedding as the pit

was eventually closed, the Grimley Colliery Band became the best

brass band in the county, and Pete Postlethwaite delivered a speech

that made me want to single handily take on those 12 blokes again.

The film ended and as I departed we were invited to join my

Samaritans for a beer. Four hours later we were quite drunk in the

Maharaja curry house, dancing to Jerusalem with our new pals. I

loved my time in South Wales although unfortunately for me my relationship didn‟t last as long as my love for Brass Music!

So I would like to end with a mention to the Hatfield Colliery band

who are still going strong and are due to take part in regional finals

in Bradford at the St George‟s Hall on March 6th. You will also be

able to catch them at various times throughout the year, so if you a

proud Yorkshire lass or lad and you fancy listening to a “bit o‟

brass” then keep your eyes peeled for concert details. Alternatively

contact Maxine on 07590 963861. Or you could always offer to

help out in some way as they would love a hand in updating their

website. Trust me, the Hatfield Colliery band are well worth a

listen and it makes me feel immensely proud to know that Hatfield

can still knock out

a bloody good

tune when it

matters old lad. I

ask you, is there a

better feeling than

grass under your

feet, a decent pint

and some brass

band music to

make you feel that

maybe life isn‟t so

bad after all.

Report from Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School This month has been very exciting at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary. The children have been working

hard as always and are all looking forward to half-term holidays.

Zoning

The school councillors recently visited Hatfield Manor and Travis schools for ideas on how to make

lunch and break-times better. One idea that the councillors agreed on was a brilliant one - the

zoning scheme. The councillors worked with their classes to come up with ideas for different zones.

We are very excited about the different zones in our playground such as the „Sports Zone‟ and the

„Craze of the Week‟ zone. At the minute the zoning scheme is only happening at lunchtimes but in

the near future, the zoning will also be happening at break times. The councillors have also

introduced the Buddy project. Two councillors have been chosen to be “Buddies” and they have a

bag full of notebooks and pencils and other fun activities. The buddies keep a look out for lonely

children and then they go and play with them. This ensures that every child has a fun break time.

Basic Skills Assessment

We are pleased to tell you that once again the school has achieved the Basic Skills Award. This

award is given to schools who teach literacy and numeracy well. Two children from yr 6 showed

Mrs Round and Mr Flint around the school, explaining about the topics in each class and how Maths

and English are taught here. Then the assessors looked at our evidence files and watched some

lessons. We are very proud to have gained the award for the fourth time. First Aid Training

Years 3 and 4 recently took a first aid training course. Firstly, they learnt how to keep the different

apparatus found in a first aid kit, sterile. Next they were taught how to save someone‟s life. To do

so they would have to check the breathing rate of the wounded person and clear the airways. They

would also have to roll the person into the recovery position, on their side to prevent the tongue

from obstructing the airways. After that they would phone the ambulance, giving the information of

their location and the identity of the person who had fallen ill. All of the children passed the course

and received a certificate. Well done years 3 and 4!

Blunderbus

On Thursday 3rd of February the Blunderbus Theatre

Company came into school to perform „The Very

Noisy Night‟ in front of KS1and Foundation Stage. The

Children and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the 10/10

performance about a young mouse who didn‟t want to

go to sleep and described it as “Wicked” and

“Hilarious”.

Conisbrough Castle

The Year 1 children went on a trip to

Conisbrough Castle, a ruin that dates back to the

early 1300s! They were all shown round and they

especially enjoyed the trip to the top! It was very

windy but the children were very sensible and

thankfully none of them toppled off

!

Internet Safety Week

We have been learning about e-safety. Mr Wain has explained about how to be safe on the Internet.

He has also told us about a new learning platform for all the children of the school. Only members

of Hatfield Woodhouse Primary can gain entry, so that all of the children‟s details remain

confidential.

Unfortunately, when the year 6s leave the school to go on up to secondary school, they will be cut

from the Learning Platform!

Tangled

On Tuesday 1st February, Miss Shaw‟s class went on a school trip to the cinema to see the movie

„Tangled‟. Everyone absolutely loved the film and would definitely go again if they could. They were

incredibly well behaved and earned the treat. Another 10/10.

Multi-cultural Arts week

As part as Multi-cultural Week year 4 have

been learning about India. A visitor called Mrs

Penny Forsyth, from a charity called „Action

Aid‟, came to talk to year 4 about her trip to

India. She talked to them about the village up

in the blue hills called Chembakolli. She also

informed the class how the people of

Chembakolli lived and how they made

their houses. Year 4

had the opportunity

to dress up in saris

and crush some

aromatic Indian

spices.

That‟s it for the March issue. Thank-you for reading and we look forward

to telling you about next month‟s events.

Dear readers,

A hazard is anything that contains an element of potential danger. That includes junctions, roundabouts,

hillcrests and bends, as well as the position and movement of other road users and even the weather.

Imagine combining all six of these elements in one scenario and you have a massive potential for danger.

To an Advanced Driver, any junction, say a roundabout, traffic lights or a left or right turn, is a hazard, not

just a child running into the street, a blind bend or an accident black spot. This means that it is essential

for you to position your vehicle correctly when dealing with them, giving you that one essential safety

„ingredient‟ sufficient time to react.

To minimise your chances of being affected by other peoples mistakes or adverse driving conditions you

must take a planned and systematic approach to your driving.

What is Commentary Driving:

Commentary driving- describing aloud everything you see, think and do whilst driving- is a great way to

hone your driving technique. On a busy road or in an urban environment you‟ll often find there is so much

going on that you can‟t describe it all quickly enough – you simply can‟t keep up verbally.

This proves how many thought processes a vigilant driver goes through on an everyday drive.

Commentaries illustrate how much you are really seeing and the level of thinking involved, not just your

actions.

Driving Plans: The three simple questions.

What can be seen? Plan your drive on what you can see ahead, to the rear, and all around you.

What cannot be seen? Remember that danger can exist on every hidden section of the road

What might reasonably be expected to happen? Keep a look-out for clues to dangers that may lay ahead,

eg:

Junction warning signs give early notice that a driver may be waiting to pull out ahead.

Dustbins outside houses on a twisty road mean that there could be a stationary dustbin lorry around the

next bend.

Loose hedge clippings or straw on a country road, warn that there could be a slow moving tractor or

combine harvester round the next bend.

Don‟t follow buses to closely or you may get stuck behind them when they pull up at the next stop. Drop

back a little and keep a lookout for the next stop, as it provides advanced warning of an opportunity to

pass.

Prioritise hazards in order of importance. Deal with each one accordingly.

With these potential hazards in mind drive within the limits of what you can see, never assume anything

and plan for danger to emerge from obscured areas.

offer, you‟ll be able to find this information on
