Lenten Mission Holy Week Retreat

The Paschal Mystery As Vital Light and Might

April 15-17—in the Church

Fr. Pio Estepa, SVD presents 3 days exploring “The Paschal Mystery”. Topics for each evening are:

• Monday, April 15 - 9am & 7pm FAITH AS VIA CRUCIS (Way of the Cross) • Tuesday, April 16 - 9am & 7pm HOPE AS RISUS PASCHALIS (Easter Laughter) • Wednesday, April 17 - 9am THE SEDER AS ‘EUCHARIST’ (Thanksgiving)

The Paschal Mystery—after every Eucharistic consecration of bread and wine, what we proclaim as the “mystery of faith” is what we most solemnly celebrate during the Holy Week –from Passion Sunday to Easter Sunday.

From Holy Monday to Wednesday, you are most welcome to join our parish community in reflecting anew on the Paschal Mystery:

• What meaningful light (why) can it shed on our journey from womb to tomb?

• And what sustaining might (how) can it give to our “pursuit of happiness”?

“One who has a why to live for,” so affirms a German adage, “can bear with almost any how.”

REFLECTIONS

Treasures from Our Tradition

By now, many may have failed in Lenten discipline. The daily dough-nut or cigarette is simply too allur-ing. There is meaning even in the failure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together. We fall, we get up and clear space in our lives.

What do we do with the space we have made with our sacrifice? It’s balanced by the Easter question of our response to Christ’s love: “What are you taking on for Easter?

Stand Firm in the Lord

It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the de-struction of humanity, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never chang-es. Paul says, “Many . . . conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruc-tion . . . Their minds are occupied with earthly things” (Philippians 3:18, 19).

The result is the destruction of inno-cent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, “our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (3:20). He will “change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body” (3:21). Note that he says “body” rather than “bodies.” He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God.

So “stand firm in the Lord” (4:1).
