Do This. Don’t Do That.

The Ten Commandments are the most famous set of rules in history.

But what if our understanding of the Ten Commandments is, well, off the path?

What we in English refer to as the Old Testament Law, the Hebrews referred to as the Torah. In its original language, the Torah was understood not as a set of legal or moral prescriptions - do this, don’t do that - but as a relationship. Torah is really a directional word that alerts us how to pay attention to God’s purposes and promises and providences.

Instead of laws, as in a courtroom, consider the Ten Commandments as the top ten of a complete teaching guide from God. Its purpose is to keep us on the right path, and save us from our human tendency to wander off and get lost.

“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” Psalm 119:35

Stefan Brecher has been a Peachtree member for 23 years. He is a Field Director/Financial Representative at Northwestern Mutual. Stefan serves as a table leader at Ironmen. He has previously served as an elder and traveled to Jamaica on a family mission trip. Stefan volunteers as a coach in both football and basketball. He and his wife, Mischa, have three children, Hollis, Jack and Max.

Julianna Rue Cagle is a Development Officer at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she is responsible for nationwide fundraising efforts for the Aflac Cancer Center. Julianna has been a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church for 26 years. She has grown up in the church, attended 13 years of Camp Rutledge and is President of the Connections Class. She is on the Board of Friends Junior Committee, LaAmistad, and Pace Academy Young Alumni and volunteers with Journey Men’s Shelter and the Latin American Association. Julianna lives in Brookhaven with her husband, Spencer Cagle.

Mary Dye is a native of Atlanta. She and her husband, Mercer, joined Peachtree Presbyterian in 1977. Mary previously served as an Elder at Peachtree and is a member of the Heritage Sunday School Class. She has a passion for Presbyterian Women and has served as Moderator of this group of multi-generational women. Mary and Mercer have one daughter and two grandsons.

Alec Fraser is a former U.S. Navy Ship Captain, former President of Turner Global Properties at Turner Broadcasting, and is now writing a book on decision making. He has previously served as an elder and has been a member of the Credence Sunday School class for over 15 years. He is the former Chairman of the Board at Riverside Military Academy, former President of the Atlanta Rotary Club, and member of the Atlanta Police Foundation.

Billy Holley has been a member of Peachtree since 1997. He and his wife, Claire, have been active members of the Breadbreakers Sunday School Class since 1998, and he has served as president of the class. He has also taught Sunday School, served on the Discipleship Committee in 2010, and currently serves as an elder. He currently serves as chairman of the board of Kindred Spirit, a Christian home for pregnant teens. He, Claire and their daughters, Amelia and Megan, served as a host family for Childspring International, co-hosting a toddler from Haiti for two years with another Peachtree family. Amelia and Megan are active in Peachtree’s student ministries. He is the chief financial officer of the Metro Atlanta YMCA.

Bill Serravezza retired after thirty five years with SunTrust Banks as Executive Vice President, Line of Business Manager for Commercial Real Estate. He currently is serving as the Chairman of the Board of Kingdom Advisors, a discipleship ministry serving Christian professionals in the financial services industry. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University, with a major in Business Administration and earned his MBA from Georgia State University, with a major in Finance. Active in civic and community affairs, Bill has served on various boards throughout his career. He is a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church and is on the Leadership Team for Global Ministry. Bill is married to Liz, and has two daughters and a granddaughter.

Sheldon Staples, a native of Dallas, TX, has been attending Peachtree since 1973. She met her husband, Max, in the youth group. They have two children - Jack (15) and a daughter Carson (14), both of whom attend Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, where Sheldon is an active volunteer. She graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1989 and, before children, worked in retail marketing with Wachovia Bank. Sheldon is a Sales Rep for Kelly’s Kids clothing and the co-owner of My Best Friend’s Freezer. She has served a previous term as an Elder, chaired “The Gift Goes On” in 2004, directed Vacation Bible School, chaired the Community Ministries Committee, served on the Benevolence Committee, served on the Board of the LifeGate Counseling Center, and has held various offices in the Breadbreakers Sunday School class. Her current Peachtree involvement includes coordinating the annual Kirkin’ of the Tartan and teaching adult Sunday School. She also serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Peachtree Presbyterian Preschool.

Family Night on Thursday, June 6

Ages 4 (prior to Sept. 1, 2013) thru rising 6th grade* Leader 2’s/3’s program for children, ages 2 or 3

prior to Sept. 1, 2013, whose parents are serving the week of VBS *Special program for rising 5th/6th graders

All children, including those with special developmental and/or medical needs, are welcome. $40 per child

VBS Extended Day Camp, will be offered for K’s thru 4th graders

by the Gym at Peachtree, 12:30 – 5:00 pm each day of VBS, $175.
