Do This. Don’t Do That.

The Ten Commandments are the most famous set of rules in history.

But what if our understanding of the Ten Commandments is, well, off the path?

What we in English refer to as the Old Testament Law, the Hebrews referred to as the Torah. In its original language, the Torah was understood not as a set of legal or moral prescriptions - do this, don’t do that - but as a relationship. Torah is really a directional word that alerts us how to pay attention to God’s purposes and promises and providences.

Instead of laws, as in a courtroom, consider the Ten Commandments as the top ten of a complete teaching guide from God. Its purpose is to keep us on the right path, and save us from our human tendency to wander off and get lost.

“Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.” Psalm 119:35

Call to Worship Pastor: I will exalt you, O LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths. I called to you for help and you healed me.

People: O LORD, you brought me up from the grave; you spared me from going down into the pit.

Pastor: Sing to the LORD, you, his saints; praise his holy name.

People: For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Pastor: You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.

ALL: That my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever.

This hymn is based on Isaiah 43:2-5: “When you pass

through the waters, I will be with you; and through the

rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you

shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you….

Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return

for you, nations in exchange for your

life. Do not fear, for I am with you.”

Prayer of Confession Gracious and loving God, as we bring our lives before you today we acknowledge the harm we’ve done by our anger. We have said things we regret. We have lashed out at those closest to us. We have harbored hurt feelings and self-justifying thoughts. Forgive us, we pray. Come by your Spirit and free us from the anger that robs us of life and joy. Fill our hearts with grace that we might extend grace to others and worship you with gladness. Do this work within us even now as we make our silent confessions . . .

Assurance of God’s Forgiveness

*Congregational Response Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing...................................................nettleton O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be; Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love Here’s my heart: O, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.

Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Offering Our Gifts (8:45 & 10:00) For the Mountains Shall Depart.........................Hank Beebe The Chancel Choir Nancy Elton, Soloist John Elton, Piano For one small moment have I forsaken thee, But with great mercies will I gather thee, For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, But my kindness shall not depart from thee.

For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, And a wife in youth when thou wast refused, saith thy God.

For one small moment have I forsaken thee, But with great mercies will I gather thee, For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, But my kindness shall not depart from thee.

(11:15) Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.....................arr. Victor Johnson The Peachtree Youth Choir Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’m come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above. Amen.

In Isaiah 54:10, God comforts the people

of Israel, telling them that he will not abandon them, that his love will never be taken from us. For the Mountains Shall Depart is set in a jazz style by

Broadway composer Hank Beebe.

This setting of Come Thou Fount

uses 2 familiar hymn tunes to proclaim

the wonderful, confessional lyrics which were written almost 300 years

ago.

The Path: 10 Commandments for Our Daily Walk The Beloved Biped (Commandment 6)...................................(10:00) Vic Pentz Senior Pastor ................................................................................................(8:45 & 11:15) Chuck Roberts Pastor for Congregational Life

Matthew 5:21-26.............................................................................Pew Bible, page 1502

You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

GO IN GOD’S NAME

*Invitation and Benediction

*Postlude............................................................................................................John Roark

Here I Am, Lord was written in 1981 as an ordination hymn by Daniel Schutte from

Milwaukee. The text is a conversation between God and the singer. As God reveals his love for

the world, God asks, “Whom shall I send?” Where will

God be sending you this week?

Follow Me By David Platt

The author of the bestselling book Radical is convinced that many people in our churches today are misled as to what it truly means to be a follower of Christ. Western culture has drained the lifeblood out of Christianity and replaced it with a watered-down version of the gospel that is so palatable it isn’t even real anymore.

“Follow me,” Jesus calls. Two simple words that change everything. You will never be bored. You will always have purpose. You will never lack joy. But it will cost you. This call is not an invitation to pray a prayer. It is a summons to lose your life.

A call to die. A call to live. Have you answered that call?

At Lent, the custom is that we’re supposed to give something up. Every year, it’s the usual suspects: Soda. Alcohol. Sweets.

Swearing. Social media. Fast Food. Chips. And of course the king of all Lenten sacrifices: Chocolate.

Poor chocolate. The guilty anecdote to a stressful life.

But does a chocolate abstinence program really help others? This year, we have some tasty advice:

Go ahead and eat the chocolate. Serve instead. Get connected with one of Peachtree’s 30 Days of Serving.
