Song of Worship “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” Hymn #450

Song of Worship “Hosanna” Brooke Ligertwood

Proverb Reading Proverbs 23:22-25 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.

Song of Worship “Be Unto Your Name” Gary Sadler & Lynn DeShazo

Prayer of the DayThe Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. (please be seated)

Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 5:1, 16And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. [And God said]... 16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.’”The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.Gospel Reading Matthew 10:32-39The Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to You, Lord Christ.32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. 34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, Lord Christ.

The Apostles’ Creed

The Prayers of the PeopleO Lord, show your mercy upon us; And grant us your salvation.Fill your ministers with righteousness; And make your chosen people joyful.Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; For only in you can we live in safety.Lord, keep the nations under your care; And guide us in the way of justice and truth.Let your way be known upon earth; Your saving health among all nations.Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten; Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.Create in us clean hearts, O God; And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.Let us pray for our own needs, and those of others, and give thanks for our abundant blessings. (People may add their own prayers.)

Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one: Grant that your Church, being bound together in love and obedience to you, may be united in one body by the one Spirit, that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Confession of SinLet us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.

The Absolution and Peace Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The peace of the Lord be always with you; And also with you.

Dear Resurrection Family and Friends,

The following excerpts give a great explanation of the season of Lent:

“Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. The ancient church that wrote, collected, and canonized the New Testament also observed Lent, believing it to be a commandment from the apostles.”  “Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection about what really matters and taking stock of where we stand with the Lord. “  “Lent is a way to place ourselves before God humbled, bringing in our hands no price whereby we can ourselves purchase our salvation. It is a way to confess our total inadequacy before God, to strip ourselves bare of all pretense to righteousness, to come before God in dust and ashes. It is a time to empty ourselves of our false pride, of our rationalizations that prevent us from seeing ourselves as needy creatures, of our ‘perfectionist’ tendencies that blind us to the beam in our own eyes.”  “In Lent, through prayer and lifestyle choices that give up self, we seek to open ourselves up before God, and to hear anew the call ‘Come unto me!’ We seek to recognize and respond afresh to God’s presence in our lives and in our world. We seek to place our needs, our fears, our failures, our hopes, our very lives in God’s hands, again. And we seek, by affirming our desire to follow Christ, to recognize again who God is, to allow His transforming grace to work in us once more, and to come to worship Him on Easter Sunday with a fresh perspective of His victory and our hope.”  (Excerpts by Dennis Bratcher  Copyright ©, Dennis Bratcher - All Rights Reserved See The Apostolic Constitutions, Book V, section III.)

Looking forward to a meaningful Lent with you, ~ David
