Dr. Brian Harris, Music Director

Program

The Waco Community BandFounded in 1981 and sponsored by McLennan Community College, the Waco Community Band is an active extension of MCC’smusical leadership in the Central Texas area. The band consists of amateur and professional musicians who meet at MCC to rehearseand perform as many as ten concerts each season. Many members are from Waco, although several commute more than 80 miles toparticipate. Besides bringing high-quality concert performances to the Waco area, the WCB is also active in community-sponsoredevents such as the Race for the Cure, summer music presentations, Veteran’s Day services, memorial services, and July 4th celebrations.The band also provides musicians for several of MCC’s opera and musical productions.

Our MissionTo promote music and its enjoyment throughout Central Texas. To provide an opportunity for amateur and professional musiciansto fulfill their souls. To bring new music of high artistic integrity to the community while at the same time preserving the richrepertoire of the past.

Personnel

Dr. Brian P. Harris holds the Ph.D. in Music Education from the Florida State University where he studied windconducting with James Croft, orchestra conducting with Phillip Spurgeon, and arranging/composition with CharlesCarter. He received the Master of Music from Louisiana State University, studying conducting with Frank Wickes andarranging with John Edmunds. His Bachelor of Music degree is from Samford University. Prior to joining the Universityof Texas at San Antonio faculty in 1991, where he was Associate Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music,he taught public school music from 1979 to 1986.

He is author of the internationally-distributed Warner Brothers method book “Directional Warm-Ups for Band” and writes the “Composersof Great Works for Band” series for the Texas Bandmasters Association Journal. He has published and presented clinics and research atstate and national levels and remains active as an adjudicator, clinician, and composer. He is President-Elect of the Texas CommunityBand Directors Association and a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, Phi Mu AlphaMusic Fraternity, and Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity.

Dr. Harris presently serves as Director of Bands at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. At MCC, his responsibilities includethe MCC Wind Symphony, the Waco Community Band, the Waco Area Youth Wind Ensemble, and the MCC Pep Band.
