President Lynn Serra

Thanks to Larry Best of Chicagoland Sports Car Club, some of us North Suburbanites (Is that a word?) were ableto spend last weekend surrounded by karting experts.Larry made a successful motion at a recent MidwesternCouncil Board of Directors meeting and shot some of usright into the thick of things in karting.Although my arches, and those of Ray Kollock, Larry No-ble, Dave Bralich, and Ross Fosbender, may be flat from

urday at the Autobahn track, help the club out administerthe event and then get some free time touring the track inorder to either learn or update your knowledge of thetrack. Such a deal.If you have any friends or neighbors that you think wouldbe interested in attending the school there is still time toregister them. Last months Rod Knock contained a pullout flyer for the school, just get it, copy it, give it to themand then bring them to the school. Please contact Lynn Serra at Ph (815) 943-5661 or [email protected] and let her know that you can help.

5- Annual W2W Tech Inspection – the first Council2008 Annual Tech day will be held on April 12th at theAdvanced Autosports shop at 1928 Whipple Street, Be-loit, WI, Ph (608) 313-1230, www.advanced-autosports.com .The Tech inspection is free to Council members. 6- Blackhawk Tire Wall Day – the annual re-build the

tire wall day at Blackhawk will be on Saturday April 5th.This is a good chance to come out to the track, see thenew improvements, help the club update one of the mostvital safety items at the track and to see your fellow clubmembers.

7- Something New – with this issue we will start to takeadvantage of the Rod Knock being available on the website by posting an additional article as an addendum to theprinted Rod Knock on the web site. The article is a mustread racing oil durability test that was conducted by a rac-ing publication, the Street Commodores www.streetcommodores.com, from the land of OZ Down Un-der. Racing is very big in Australia and their test, whichwas run using test equipment very similar to the Timkentest equipment and procedure, is very interesting with sur-prising results. Go to the on line version of the March2008 Rod Knock and download the tests .pdf file.

Finally, with the first race less than seven weeks away, itis vitally important that we all start having good thoughtsso that the snow is gone by that time.See you at the Racing Show and the Indoor RacingSchool. Joe NSSCC

standing all day, I feel the short and long-term rewards forMC will far outweigh the discomfort.I spoke to dozens of people who were exhibitors or atten-dees of the show. They all said the same things: 1) Thenumber of competitors was down last season; 2) Oncethese kids reach 14 years old they have to make a decisionof what they want to do in racing because there is no-where else to go in karting!; and 3) That they have neverheard of Midwestern Council. I met one gal who was 14years old and her dad. She was a multi-year champion inendure sit up type karts and had won Daytona just thisyear. She had been sought out by a NASCAR sub-series,however was not sure that was right for her. She foundone of Bruce Weatherston’s Formula Continentals veryappealing.Everyone in our booth knew exactly where all these kar-ters would be welcome in the future. Ray was the con-summate professional MC representative throughout the

weekend. After competing in 38 Miata events without asingle DNF last year, Ray had a lot of wisdom to imparton the visitors to the booth.

By the way, being two days after the show, I have alreadyreceived three inquiries about our Indoor Racing School

from attendees to the show and expect to have manymore. There was also at least one celebrity at the show. VicHolman owner of Bowman Karts supplies all the karts toChicago Indoor Racing. He also was the inventor/builderof the Performance Racing Series (PRS) Formula Fordand the Hawk Formula Ford. I was fortunate enough totalk to Vic for a long time on Sunday. And boy does heever have the stories to tell, including one about MarioAndretti calling him anxious to buy a new PRS. Now Iam always saying that Mario has called me to meet himfor dinner, however Vic is actually telling the truth. In March Midwestern Council will be having a booth atthe Race & Performance Show at Pheasant Run in St.Charles. I am looking forward to sore feet and anothergreat success for us. NSSCC

Autobahn Track Update- Autobahn Country Club News ReleaseAutobahn Country Club is always looking for ways to im-prove our facilities. The feedback we get from all the rac-ers has been informative and we would like to offer an up-date to the ongoing improvements. A number of thingshave already been completed and others are to be startedin the spring. We would invite you to pass this informa-tion along to all your participants as they begin to plan forthe 2008 racing season.Completed Projects-Track SurfaceExperts from across the country have been consulted andwork is being performed based on their recommendations.Surface grinding has been performed in several more ar-eas to eliminate some of the bumps. These areas includeboth the north and south front straights and the entry tocorner 5 on the south track. Light patch work has beenperformed to provide a smoother surface without affectingthe overall grip at north 5 and 6 as well as corners 6 and11 on the south track.-Safety

Tire walls have been added or expanded at several placesincluding corners 3 and 6 on the north track as well asturn 3 on the south track.-DrainageA new drainage system has been installed for portions ofthe south track to help alleviate the problem of water run-ning across the track after a heavy rain, this should alsohelp the track dry faster.Upcoming projects-Track SurfaceGrinding will continue where the worst bumps are locatedalong with some patch work where needed.-SafetyThe expansion of the tire walls is an ongoing process. Thenext areas set for completion include north 8 as well assouth 3, 6 and 11.-PaddockWe will be paving the gravel Kart track paddock. We hope these improvements add to the experience ofracing at Autobahn and we look forward to a great 2008season.Autobahn Country Club NSSCC

Student/Instructor Communications- Jack Murphy, Instructee at LargeIn order to provide a little perspective on why you'reabout to waste the next three minutes or so of your life,I've been asked to write an article about intercoms andtheir usage in the helmets of autocross instructors and stu-dents. Just to set the record straight, we need to under-stand a few things. First, I'm a new member. Second, I'ma lousy drive (ask my wife.) Third, I don't know anythingabout cars (I've got a beat up old 911 turbo and a semibeat up old Boxster and every time I get in it takes mearound 5 minutes to figure out you put the key in the igni-tion on the left side.) Fourth, I know absolutely nothingabout electronics or communication equipment (I oncewas able to make a partially successful cell phone callthanks to the guidance of my grandchildren.)

About now you're wondering what qualifies this son of a%$#@* to write an article for "Rod Knock." I was won-dering the same damn thing: Then it dawned on me. Yousee, the weather the night of the NSSCC, December boardmeeting was just awful, not to mention that it was onlyfive days before Christmas. Well, as you might imagine, attendance was little thin and our illustrious President waslimited in her choice of members to have "volunteer" towrite an article. Come to think of it, I was it. Anyway, that and the fact that I'm a pro-instructee probably"qualified" me. Oh, I'm guessing you don't know what a"pro"-instructee" is since I just made it up. We all knowwhat an instructor is. That's the one imparting all thatknowledge to a student who's the one listening, absorbing

(Continued on page 8)

and learning. There are different levels of students. Someare really good (W2W want-a-bees,) some are pretty good(I think I could go faster than Fosbender's Toyota Camryif they'd just let me out of this conga line,) some are notso good (eventually getting to pass in more than just onestraight,) and some just don't even deserve to be called astudent at all. These are instructees. Now, to be a "pro"-instructee you have to have been at this for as long as Ihave and have had as many instructors hide every timeyou pull into a false grid.

As a pro-instructee I've had as many instructors try tocommunicate with me as just about anyone on theplanet. And, I can tell you from experience, hearing in-structions is way overrated. If we're yelling back andforth, I always have an excuse. As an example, RonPetrucci was my instructor once and as usual, I was tryingto save wear and tear on my pointing-by arm and fin-ger. Without an intercom, I could make Ron think I didn'thear him tell me a relatively long line of cars was formingbehind me. This made it possible for me to get to the endof the straight without having to let anyone by. By theway, not only does this save arm exertion, but it keepsyou from having to use the mirrors for another five or sixcorners. On another occasion without intercoms, BillMarquardt was trying his luck with instructing me aroundGingerman. This time, because of not being able to hearBill give me the line, I was able to set a record for thedriver coming closest to the only tree near thecourse. Many of you have probably never seen the tree asit is quite a ways from the track; however, should you

ever want to brake my record, the best I can suggest is toearly apex turn three, jerk the wheel for a save, and thenstab the throttle real hard as the track drops away formyou…that little sucker’ll spin like a top. By the way, ifit’s in the fall, even though it’s against the rules, youmight consider rolling up the windows before your recordattempt as it takes about six to seven months to get theprairie grass out of the car.

Speaking of the benefits of not being able to hear your in-structor, I sometimes wish this extended to not being ableto hear other track staff. As an example, I've even hadGary Weis in the car for instruction, albeit as stewardrather than driving instructor. This one I really didn'twant to hear. But, Gary went on anyway to explain why Ishould have pitted after seeing all those black flags. Andall the time I thought they were ads for some kind of bugspray...go figure.

Oh, about those intercoms. Even though, as a pro-instructee, I don't believe in them, I figured I better do alittle research. I looked 'em up on the new computer mywife got for Christmas and needless to say had about thesame luck I did with that cell phone call. I don't have aclue about what the club should get. It's a good thingJohn Churchill is in charge of deciding between Nady andChatter Box. Come to think of it, he's also the guy thatdrives a drag strip Camero on a road course. Well, we'lljust have to hope for the best.

Respectfully submitted,Jack Murphy, novice driver/pro-instructee NSSCC

In looking back at the roster, noless than 23 MC members rallied to make this 3-day(Friday was a set-up day) event possible. The list in-cluded: Alden Wells, Bill Boesen, Bruce Weatherston,Chuck Cassaro, Dave Bralich, Dave Wheeler, FrankHartl, Frank Riemann, Gary Weis, James Smith, JayBusse, Ken Rochocki, Larry Best, Larry Noble, LoisBerg-Wells, Lynn Serra, Mike Schindlbeck, RaymondKollock, Rich Cwik, Ross Fosbender, Scott Green, TerryAasen, and Walter Modelski. A personal thanks is in or-der to each person that brought their MC knowledge to anew audience. I apologize if I missed anyone.

We started out with one car (Dave Wheeler's MazdaMiata SM) and the notion that there may be a Karter (orKarter's mom or dad) that might want to go racing insomething a bit different. Due to a late vendor cancella-tion, we were able to expand our booth to include a sec-ond car (Bruce Weatherston' s Van Diemen FC) on veryshort notice. Certainly a thank you is in order to thosemembers that wanted to help with the 2nd car order, butdue to snowed in trailers, cars disassembled, lack of towvehicles, and a few other valid reasons, could not make it.

As Ross indicated, we engaged with a variety of people, including several Kart Class Champs that have lappedBHF and RA with record times. We re-connected with anumber of past MC members that have raced with us, andmay do so again. We also engaged a number of folks thatwere interested in the Race Staff opportunities. There wasquite a bit of interest in the North Suburban Indoor DriverSchool (March 29th) that will be held at the Autobahn.Lynn Serra indicated that she has already heard from a

few folksvia email with follow-up questions. With more than ade-quate staffing, many of us had the opportunity to walk theExpo floor and learn more about Karting today, and whatthe technology elements include. For some of us, our lastcontact with Karting came at the July, 1991 MidwesternCouncil "Motorsports Weekend" that included the MCW2W program, a Pro Sports 2 Litre race, Karts and Mo-torcycles, all on the same weekend.

It's going to take a few days to distill the comments andobservations from the weekend in order to assess thevalue of participating in an event like this in the future. Ithink that one of the key objectives of providing aware-ness about our MC Road Racing program was serviced. We handed out a number of Guest Passes to our 2008 MCevents, and time will tell if those are redeemed for a closerlook at our program. For a short-range measurement,Lynn Serra will monitor the Indoor Driver School partici-pants to determine the interest level from the Kart Expo.We also provided more than 600 quad-fold brochures toattendees that covered basic information about the MCprograms along with the 2008 event schedule. Our eventco-sponsor, Prairie Hills attended the event on Saturday, providing us with brochures covering the future road rac-

ing facility they are planning to build in Northwest Indi-ana. Mike Krupka and Bob Humphrey also participated inthe several of the Conference sessions and met with othervendors to learn more about the opportunities in Karting.

The Expo ended at 4:00 PM on Sunday evening. The MCarmy of ants was able to disassemble the booth and re-move all of the material and the 2 racecars in under 30minutes. Everyone was on their way home at 4:30 PM.Dave Wheeler was the only Expo participant that pushedhis car outside, hit the starter, and motored off to histrailer, reinforcing the utility value of a Spec Miata.

There's more! A subset of the MC Kart Expo team repre-sented all of us at the "British Car Auto Jumble & SwapMeet" on Sunday (2/24/08) at the DuPage County FairGrounds. Mike Schindlbeck, Walter Modelski, Ken Ro-chocki, Dave Bralich, and Rich Cwik joined Ron Petrucciat that event (in different booths), promoting the IndoorDriver School, and the MC programs. It was a busy, butvery fun weekend!

Thanks for the opportunity to be able to try this!Larry BestChicagoland Sports Car Club NSSCC
