And the Answer Is... “A great idea.” That’s what Massachusetts Education Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester said when we first raised the possibility of WGBH creating a TV quiz show for high school students. We envisioned a program that would be tied to the Commonwealth’s core curriculum, that would celebrate academic achievement, and that would bring together students, families, teachers, schools, and communities across the state—all rooting for their home teams.

We envisioned High School Quiz Show, which debuts Monday, March 22 (see page 11). We are deeply grateful to the funders who early on saw the

value of this new series and made it possible: Major production support for High School Quiz Show is provided by the University of Massachusetts. Research, development, and production funding is generously provided by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. Additional funding is provided by Comcast, Massachusetts Teachers Association and New England Aquarium. And as always, without your crucial membership support we wouldn’t have the resources to bring new projects forward.

“We sent a flyer to test the waters with area schools,” recalls High School Quiz Show executive producer Hillary Wells. “Within just a few weeks, more than 70 schools in eastern Massachusetts had applied for the 20 slots.” Even as she whittled down the field—participating schools range from large to small, urban to suburban, charter to public—Hillary and her team climbed their own learning curve, immersing themselves in the nuances of game play and buzzer systems. They also found an ideal host: Dhaya Lakshminarayanan.

“Dhaya is energetic and fun—and with two degrees from MIT, a fabu-lous mentor for participants and viewers,” says Hillary. Dhaya is on familiar ground. She learned English by watching Sesame Street, Mister Rogers and Carl Sagan’s Cosmos on PBS. She also was part of her high school academic team.

We taped the qualifying rounds for eastern Massachusetts in late January in our Brighton studios before a packed and enthusiastic audience of all ages. The successful teams return in late spring for the quarterly, semifinal and final rounds, which will include their As Schools Match Wits counterparts from western Massachusetts.

I hope you’ll mark your calendar for March 22 and keep tuning in through the final face-off in June. We’re making the show available not only on 2 and 44, but on our World channel, via Comcast on Demand, and online (wgbh.org/highschoolquizshow).

It’s entertaining. It’s endorsed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. It’s what WGBH is here for. It’s High School Quiz Show. Tune in, and tell us what you think!

March is National Women’s History Month. Check daily listings and wgbh.org for related programs and more information.

All programs, unless noted (*), are closed captioned for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing.

What’s on 2 and 44Celebrating WomenIn celebration of the 30th anniversary of Women’s History Month, WGBH offers programs that highlight women’s achieve-ments in aviation, writing and politics. American Experience premieres Dolley Madison, a new film about the nation’s “first First Lady.” Dolley Madison was the first wife of a President to use her unelected position to legitimize the nation’s new capital, to create a political and social style for the new country and to give Americans a sense of their own national identity. As her successors have done ever since, Dolley

Madison adopted social causes of her own, including advocating for children left orphaned by the War of 1812. The film stars Tony Award winners Eve Best and Jefferson Mays as the Madisons.

Our Favorite Non-PlanetSince its discovery in 1930, Pluto has held a warm place in the public imag-ination. So, when the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium stopped calling Pluto a planet, its director, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, found himself at the center of a firestorm led by angry Pluto-loving elementary school students. But what is it about this cold, distant rock that captures so many hearts? Nova joins Tyson on a quest to find out.

Looking SharpeIn 1817, soldier/adventurer Richard Sharpe came out of retirement to quash a rebellion in British India and rescue his old friend Patrick Harper. Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings) returns as the swashbuckling hero of this long-running series, based on the best-selling novels of Bernard Cornwell, with Daragh O’Malley as Harper. The duo’s exploits put them at the center of a bloodthirsty insurgency, led by a psycho-pathic former English officer.

A Call to ConscienceTavis Smiley delves into one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s greatest speeches, “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence,” which Dr. King delivered on April 4, 1967, at Riverside Church in New York City. King chal-lenged the morality of the Vietnam conflict and urged a national discussion about the role of America in the world. Smiley examines the implications of his words today, particu-larly in light of President Obama’s decision to increase US troops in Afghanistan.

Take No PrisonersAt the end of World War II in the Pacific, the “take no prisoners, fight to the bitter end” philosophy on both sides led to an unprece-dented orgy of slaughter. From the US capture of the Mariana Islands through the firebombing of Tokyo and the dropping of the atomic bomb, this program

chronicles the dreadful and unprecedented loss of life, and the deci-sions made by leaders on both sides that finally ended the war.

tion manager asked me to come into the studio with her—so on my very first day, I was on the air for 90 minutes! About 10 months later, they hired me as a producer.

Q How do you approach interviewing people?

A My philosophy is that the guest is the star of the show.

The listeners want to hear what the guest has to say; they are less interested in hearing me. And the listeners are very important. We try to work in as many calls, emails, tweets, and Facebook posts as possible, while keeping the discussion broadly interesting. My goal is to have listeners leave with a better understanding of the subject at the end of the hour.

Q How has the Internet changed the show?

A It makes it that much more lively. You hear from so many more people with a wide range

of views. Some of our younger listeners are more comfortable communicating with us through email, Twitter and Facebook. This morning, we had 20 messages from Facebook before we went on the air, so they’re not even waiting until the con-versation begins!

Q What’s the secret of your success?

A Listening is what it’s all about. I’ve said that we

really ought to be called “listening” radio as opposed to “talk” radio. The inherent nature of my job is to listen well, and if I’m listening well to my guests and I’m listening well to my listeners, that’s what they appreciate.

Q What has been your biggest challenge?

A In recent years, my biggest challenge has been my voice. I have something called

“spasmodic dysphonia,” which causes my vocal cords to clamp inappropriately and create sort of a choking sound. Every four months, I have Botox injected directly into my vocal cords to keep the spasms under control, and I am usually off the air for a few days while my vocal cords readjust.

Q What do you like best about your job?

A I love having the conversations I do, each and every day. I have the best job in the world.

I learn so much in that chair, and I love to learn.

What’s on 99.5 All Classical

18

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has been part of the WGBH classical family since our first live broadcast from Symphony Hall in 1951. In 2010, WGBH significantly expanded our BSO offerings as part of our new 99.5 All Classical service. Along with increased coverage, we’re delivering even more of the in-depth analysis and exploration of the music that you expect and deserve.

Look for more concerts and specials as we now present a BSO program every Saturday night, 52 weeks of the year. When there is a live concert, you will hear it live. When the Orchestra is not performing live, we offer a concert recorded earlier and not played on Saturdays, or special programs exploring the Orchestra’s history, repertoire, people and recordings. And BSO artists and soloists are frequent guests in our Fraser Performance Studio, bringing you exclusive perfor-mances by these talented musicians.

In the spring, we’ll bring you a Boston Pops concert every Saturday night. And in the summer, we’re off to Tanglewood, broadcasting all three concerts from the Shed each weekend.

Quantity is important, but it’s how we present the concerts that really counts. Each Saturday night program begins with a full hour of BSO-related music, interviews and features, preparing listeners for the performance to come and intro-ducing the pieces, composers and players. Our BSO producer, Brian Bell, takes the time to talk to the people whose compositions and performances

James Levine Conducts “Farewell Songs”Peter Lieberson wrote his “Neruda Songs” for his wife, mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, which she performed with the Boston Symphony shortly before her death from cancer. Now the Boston Symphony has commissioned Peter Lieberson again, and he has written “Farewell Songs” as a response to his loss. Baritone Gerald Finley sings and James Levine conducts in the world broadcast premiere. Sat, 3/27 at 7pm (Concert at 8pm)

you will hear, offering glimpses into the music and the creative process that brings it about.

Another feature on 99.5 All Classical is Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart’s daily segments, continuing his popular Keith’s Classical Corner fea-ture on Laura Carlo’s morning show at 8:30am. It’s another side of Keith, as he offers a wide range of classical selections with style and humor.

One thing that hasn’t changed is our Sunday afternoon tradition of bringing you The BSO on Record, our comprehensive survey of the Orchestra’s recorded legacy. Brian Bell rounds up recordings from the earliest days of the technology right up to the Orchestra’s most recent work. Echoes of the past in rare and unreleased tracks, great moments from the 78 and 33 rpm eras and the latest digital recordings are brought together in a broad and thoughtful look at the work the BSO has recorded over the years.

Classical Performance PodcastFritz Kreisler was known as one of the most expressive violinists of his generation and for the sweet sound of his violin. The young Danish violinist Nikolaj Znaider plays on Kreisler’s violin, a Guarnerius “del Gesu” 1741, and makes it sing beautifully again in this performance of a few of Kreisler’s miniatures. We captured this recording at our Fraser Performance Studio when Znaider dropped in between rehearsals with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in January. Download this podcast at 995allclassical.org.
