A Message from Our Senior Pastor

    Dr. Andy Hurst

    Senior Pastor

Road Less Traveled “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and

broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter

through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that

leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14

In 1978 Scott Peck wrote the best selling, Road Less Traveled. Peck’s work sold over 7 million copies and became groundbreaking literature connecting the academic

disciplines of psychology and theology in significant new ways. Scott Peck may be the author who wrote and sold the book about the less traveled road, but in our scripture above it is clear that it is Jesus who made the initial invitation for us to travel down such a road to life. This less travelled road is (1) A road with a very specific Way of entry; (2) A road that leads to life; (3) A road not found by the many but by the few; (4) A road filled with difficulty and challenge. During this season of Lent, we are going to journey together in the Way of Jesus. Our Lenten sermon series, “The Road Less Traveled,” will focus in on Jesus as we study the red letter teaching and red letter living of our Lord and Savior. One of the real dangers of the modern day church is that we take for granted Who Jesus is. Dallas Willard in his book, The Divine Conspiracy says that “We have become complacent. We feel like we know Jesus. That familiarity has in effect led to unfamiliarity, unfamiliarity has led to contempt, and contempt has led to profound ignorance.” So during this season of Lent we are going to be looking at what some have called the hard sayings of Jesus: His sayings that may make us cringe, His sayings that make us uncomfortable in our pews, His sayings that we wish He had never said because without them we think our lives would seemingly be made easier. Get ready and buckle your seat belts. Prepare your tray tables for liftoff. Store all your personal belongings under your seat because for the next six weeks, we are about to journey down the road less travelled. As we go on this journey together, we will take note of how Jesus is calling

us to live both personally and corporately, individually and in community. If we are

going to travel the road less traveled as a church there are two all important steps

for us to take as we begin this journey. First step, we need to seek the face of

God: Second step, we need to have the heart of God.

In our JLLL (Jesus’ Leaders Love Learning) group, we are reading Minding the

Good Ground by Jason Vickers. This book is all about a theology of church

renewal. Vickers points out the obvious when he says that seemingly everyone

wants church renewal and very, very few church goers want the opposite, i.e.

church decline and death. Vickers describes several different models and camps

of church renewal, but he clearly says that the Source of both the birth and the

renewal of the church is the Holy Spirit. Thus our first and always mandate is the

same as it was for the very first followers of Jesus. We are to tarry in prayer; we

are to be a people of prayer seeking God’s face, God’s presence, God’s provi-

sion, and God’s purpose. Vickers says, “The church that truly yearns for renewal

will commit herself to one thing above all else. She will invite the Holy Spirit to

come, and she will do so continuously until the Spirit shows up.”

    Andy’s Dream List

A Holy Lent---I pray that these 40 days will be all about our church, both individually and corporately, not just talking about the Road Less Travelled but living the Way of Jesus as we grow deeper, more passionate, more committed and surrendered to Jesus. Radical Hospitality---I pray that God will raise up and renew a fresh army of greeters who will be the hands and the smiles and the arms of Jesus all the way from the parking lot to the pew so that every single person who God brings to our church will have no doubt that they are welcome and wanted by us and loved by God. Training and Appreciation for our Hospitality Volunteers is Sunday, March 4 at Noon at Central. Paid in FullFree to Serve Leadership Team---I pray God will raise up 60 prayerful, Spirit-empowered leaders to make the upcoming financial campaign exactly how He wants it. 15 Confirmands---I pray for God to move powerfully in our upcoming Confirmation Retreat. This year’s retreat (March 31st) will be open to all youth (6th grade and above) who have never been through confirmation or who have never yet publicly affirmed their faith in Christ. 4 Lead Gifts---I pray for God to be working in the hearts and minds of four gracious and giving St. Luke’s

members who will pledge $100,000 or more over a three year period beginning in June of 2012.

    ….Continued from page 1

HOLY WEEK Holy Week is April 1-8th. Palm Sunday, April 1 • We will begin Holy Week on Palm Sunday as we focus on The Passion of Christ in all four worship services. Monday through Friday, April 2 - 6 • We will have daily come and go communion at both campuses from 7 to 8 am. • We will have daily Brown Bag Lunches at Central FH from 12 to 12:45pm where our pastors will lead us in a study “Walking Where Jesus Walked.” Holy Week Services, April 5 & 6 • Maundy Thursday Service at Central at 7pm Thursday night • Good Friday Service at Southwest at 7pm Friday night Resurrection Day, April 8 • Sunrise Service with communion at Southwest at 6:30 am followed by breakfast • Easter Celebration services at all four Worship Services: 8:30C, 9:30C, 10:30SW, 10:45C

Our second step as a church following Jesus down His narrow way is to make sure we have God’s heart in all that we do. In Luke 19:1-10 we have the wonderful story of Jesus initiating a life-changing encounter with Zacchaeus. Jesus closes out His encounter with Zacchaeus by letting us see His core purpose and thus also the core of God’s heart: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” In Luke 15 the religious leaders murmured about Jesus because he was hanging out with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus replies by giving them three very concrete examples of why He had come and who His Father is: a lost sheep, a lost coin, a lost son. In all three stories we are told that God is a God Who seeks the lost, a God Who goes to great lengths to find the lost, a God Who transforms those who are lost into those who are most certainly found, and a God who rejoices when the lost are found. The repeated imagery of heaven in all out party, celebration mode shows how absolutely valuable the lost are to God. I have no doubt that God is calling us to reach beyond our walls, to get out of our comfort zones as never before. We must always remember William Temple’s famous quote about the church, “The church is the only organization that exists for the benefit of non-members.” In this season of Lent may we be very intentional about both reaching up to Him and reaching out for Him as we travel together down the road less traveled. Seeking His face and His heart,

    CONFIRMATION

    RETREAT

    Saturday, March 31st

will be a day of fun,

    learning, and spiritual

growth for all youth ages 6th grade and above

who have never been through confirmation.

This one day intensive retreat will be led by

Andy, Matt, Don and Jon and will be filled

with fun activities, short talks, meaningful

interaction, and prayer. Our text for the day

will be the Apostle’s Creed. We will use

Timothy Tennent’s book This We Believe as

a resource. All confirmands will receive this

book as a gift at the conclusion of the retreat.

This year we will observe the practice of the

early church and formally receive our

confirmands into the church on Easter

Sunday, April 8th. If you have any questions

about this year’s confirmation retreat, give

Andy Hurst or a call at 797-4393.

Come one, come all. The Trustees have set Saturday, April 14th as a work day at the Central Campus to trim trees, shrubs, pick up leaves and repair the fence at the parsonage. We will begin at 8:00 am and work until finished, hopefully around noon. There are some bushes at SW that need trimming as well so if anyone would like to do that it would be greatly appreciated. The church has a limited amount of tools so feel free to bring what you have. Any and all help is welcomed in order to get both campuses looking sharp and to help the maintenance/custodial staff.

Stella Spradley was the recipient of the Tudor-style stucco playhouse given away by the Southwest Playground Committee. The playhouse has been duly installed at Stella’s home and will be thoroughly enjoyed by her granddaughter, Addison, a St. Luke’s PDO student. Many, many thanks to Rick Lyon, who designed and constructed the playhouse. Rick is a church member who believes in hands-on servanthood.—his efforts and count-less hours are appreciated so very much. All the proceeds from the playhouse will go towards the construction of a much-needed playground at the Southwest Campus.

  • St. Luke’s United Methodist Women March 6, 2012 - 9:30 a.m. / Central Campus Rm. 34 Steve Grant, Chaplain of Texas Tech Athletics will present the program. All women are

invited to attend. If you have any questions, please call Jo Ann Smith, 795-1434.

On Monday, June 6, 2011 St. Luke's Administrative Council began discussion about a financial campaign for the spring of 2012. Our church leadership felt there was a great need for such a campaign primarily for the purpose of debt reduction but also to free us up to explore mission opportunities outside our church. On June 26, 2011 a Church Conference was held to discuss a financial campaign. The church conference voted to conduct a church wide financial campaign with 10% of the gifts going toward missions and with the campaign timeline and selection of campaign consultant to be determined by the Finance Committee. Unanimous consent was given to proceed.

Tyler and Associates of Irving, Texas was hired to conduct the financial campaign and serve in a consultative role with us beginning August 1, 2011. On September 18, 2011 we celebrated Dream Day with our congregation. Dream Day provided St. Luke’s with a list of profound hopes and dreams in the areas of: Discipleship, Worship & Connecting Newcomers, Children and Youth, Facilities and Finance, and Missions and Outreach. After Dream Day, Tyler and Associates prepared a church wide survey based on our Dream Day data. This survey was available to the entire church family in written and online forms. Tyler and Associates also came to Lubbock to visit with forty families on Friday and Saturday January 6-7, 2012. The information from the survey and interviews was collected in a summary report that is now ready for our review and planning. Administrative council will be meeting over the next several months using this information to plan and carry out God’s dreams for our church. All members will be receiving a copy of this report in the mail later this month. Our church will formally enter into a six week financial campaign, “Paid in Full, Free to Serve” beginning April 22, 2012. Prayerfully consider how you will be a part of this exciting process.

One of the ways that our church makes a difference in the United Methodist Church is by supporting the Episcopal Fund. Bishops have a very special role as they are elected and consecrated to speak to the church and from the church into the world. Bishops are called by God from many settings and bring to the church

“S varieties of giftsS the same SpiritS varieties of serviceS varieties of activitiesS the same God” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6, NRSV). Their role is both practical and visionary since bishops oversee and promote the church’s spiritual and temporal interests.

Here are Some Reasons to Give: Bishops oversee the United Methodist faith community. Their guidance depends on our financial support. The fund supports the office operations, travel, salaries, health insurance, pensions and other expenses of the bishops’ office. The fund supports 69 active bishops and approximately 125 retired bishops and surviving spouses in the five U.S. Jurisdictions and the Central Conferences (Europe, Africa and the Philippines). The bishops in The United Methodist Church oversee and are responsible for the congrations in their respective areas (Our Bishop oversees New Mexico and Northwest Texas). Bishops determine pastoral appointments, counsel with pastors, encourage congregations and lead in many ways.

  • Working on the farm as I was growing up, I was taught how to do it all. I plowed, planted, and harvested. I watered from open ditches, hauled pipe and set sprinklers. I chopped weeds and sprayed weeds. I even had to be a mechanic and learned another name for a crescent wrench was, “knuckle-scraper.” (You’ll under-stand if you ever used one regularly.) Plowing was the most boring of them all, even though not labor-intensive on my part. I would drive the tractor, trying

to keep one side of the plough just overlapping the previous ploughed soil. I quickly learned that if I looked behind, to keep my eye on the plough, I would soon be off course. If my mind wandered, the result was the same. The only way to make it work was to look ahead, concentrate, and just keep moving. No matter what shortcuts I thought would work, I could not speed up the work. I have learned, once again, it is like that with our journey with Christ. Once we get started, it is a matter of looking ahead, concentrating and continually moving. This journey is a matter of being resolute. The Disciple Luke writes in Luke 9:51, “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” The dictionary defines resolutely as “showing firm determination or purpose.” Jesus knew the path before him and he set his mind to following it. In our relationship with Christ, as we live in this world, the paths are not always clear, but the guide (Jesus) and the guidebook (Bible) helps us find our way. We must be resolute in our effort to follow Jesus Christ, because when we become unfocused or irresolute, I assure you the world will grab your attention and pull you off course. It is the same as when I was driving that tractor: pay attention and concentrate and the work at hand was accomplished. When I stopped concentrating and became distracted, I made a mess of it. In the words of Hebrews 12:2-3, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” In this season of Lent, and certainly in the days afterwards, make it your goal to resolutely fix your eyes on Jesus by praying regularly, reading more, getting in a discipleship group and regularly attending worship. Moving Mountains, albeit – one rock at a time, Pastor Matt
