I always find it enlig htening to review the results of
our annual survey which we recently conducted. By
asking questions of what you value, the Chamber
board is able to make future decisions for your or-
ganization’s future.
Ninety-six percent of our respondents stated they be-lieve the Chamber’s primary purpose is to assist in
creating a stronger local economy. Comments were
made that the Chamber is on the rig ht track by ex-
panding our programming in providing support ser-
vices and sm all business resources to assist in en-
hancing their business competitiveness in local, state and global market-
places.
An anonymous surveyor response was, “We were able to participate in the
business boot camp which helped us understand our business and how to
make it better. Although we don’t attend all chamber events, those that we
have attended have been very resourceful.”
Other priorit ies which were identified were to continue assisting our mem-bers in gaining business exposure and connecting with other business
owners. We were so excited by the response that we encountered during
the 2nd Annual Healthy Living Expo with more than 2,500 people in atten-
dance and 100 exhibitors we believe that the Cham ber has found another
signature event to showcase our local businesses’ products and services.
Another response from annual survey stated, “The exposure our business
has received has been much more than my investment.”
The Chamber board and staff continue to work on developing programs
and events with the goal of being the “go to place” for small business.
Please continue to give us feedback on your ideas to help us im prove our
organization.

Think of a great sports coach. Who first comes to mind? Bill Self, Tony LaRussa or maybe Pat Summitt? How about Tim Taylor from Friday Night Lights?
If so, these are all great examples of people (or fictional characters) who have mastered, and in some cases defined, the fundamentals of coaching to inspire and lead a winning team.
These same fundamentals are re-quired in today’s business world to inspire employee engagement and develop high-performing teams.
• Build learning into everyday activities.
• Be a thought partner.
• Give and receive feedback to grow capability.

Coaching in High Performance

March Business Training
Nicole Mattson V.P. of Human Resources Sky Ridge Medical Center
Halfway through the seven week Business Boot Camp, the participants picked up
in February where they left off in January—focusing on financial reporting. Fi-
nancial statements and other data can do more than provide a scorecard on how
the business is doing; they can identify problem areas that need to be addressed.
This is especially true of the Cash Flow Statement and the Key Performance Indi-
cators on which Instructor Mike Tafoya of Estrada Strategies focused at the Feb-
ruary 12 session. These are complex issues, but a business owner who does not
pay attention to key financial reports is operating in the dark and may not realize
the true condition of the company until it’s too late.
Boot Camp class will shift gears on March 12 and the business owners will learn
about (IT) Information Technology tools and electronic marketing opportunities.
This is a series of Business Boot Camp training highlights by Brian Leugs, President of
Business Communications Support, Boot Camp Mentor Chamber Member.
For more information on Business Boot Camp, visit the Castle Rock Economic
Gardener's website: www.CastleRockEG.com or contact [email protected].
Business Boot Camp Update
Session 4– Understanding Your Cash Flow
It may sound simple, but it’s an art (and a little science) to being an effective coach in the workplace. In this workshop, we will discuss the business case for being an ef-fective coach, the psychological connec-tion between coaching and performance, and how to use a coaching leadership style to expand individual and team ca-pacity.
You don’t have to be a sports fan to walk away with a fresh perspective on the role of coaching in creating high performing teams!

It was back to school, Douglas County style, on February 6, as
participants slipped into their seats as students; this time, begin-ning their day at Mesa Middle School in Castle Rock, which was recently authorized as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP) World School. Principal Karmen Smith,
along with IB Director Jordi Owens, kicked off the day proudly explaining the efforts, dedication and hard work of their team over the past f ive years in developing curriculum and standards that led to the ultimate recognition of the program. This beauti-
ful school opened in 2008 and contains nine team areas and addi-tional flex rooms to meet the higher technology and foreign lan-guage needs of the IB program. The Leadership participants ex-perienced some unfamiliar sights and sounds in classrooms, in-
cluding students doing math problems, singing and effortlessly reciting poetry in Chinese! Many other examples of an integrated learning approach for a globalized world were in abundance in
classrooms and on walls throughout the building.
Following the tour, the morning continued with Dr. Elizabeth Celania-Fagen, Douglas County School District (DCSD) Superinten-dent, discussing the three major efforts of DCSD: School Choice, a World Class Education and System Performance. Dr. Celania-
Fagen gave an overview of the history of Choice in the District, as well as the current emphasis on providing a World Class Educa-tion while re inventing American education for today’s digital learner. Performance-based compensation, while not a new con-
cept in Douglas County, has been revised in the form of a new tool, called CITE. Mr. Dan McMinimee, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, continued the presentation and elabo-rated on the new hiring practice of using market-based pay bands
to bring new teachers into the system along, with the integration of assessments and evaluations (CITE). He also spoke about school safety measures and an important Higher Ed connection with Arapahoe Community College that is available to DC secon-
dary school students, offering families the potential to reduce
college costs through concurrent enrollments and dual credit.
Director of Douglas County Libra ries Jamie LaRue offered his per-spective, as an experienced parent and community leader, on
additional educational choices available to DCSD students includ-ing charter schools and homeschool options. He pointed out that access to different learning environments and models he lps par-ents meet their educational goals for their children. Jamie also
returned later in the day and challenged the class on “Thinking
About Your Thinking,” as he navigated the class through its
Leadership Skill on
this topic.
As lunchtime arrived, in keeping with the spirit of the ir role as learners, class partici-
pants were served “school lunch.” While the dined on the stu-dent menu of the day
of salad, chicken chili, cornbread, kiwi, blue-berries and smooth-ies, Joe Chandler,
Director of the ACE Program at Highlands Ranch High School, presented information on the Alternative Cooperative Education program, which was recognized as the
ACE premier program in the state of Colorado for the 2012-13 school year! ACE is the only Career and Technical Education program designed specifically for high-risk and special popula-tions students that addresses individualized and transition
needs. Current data shows that 92.5% of ACE students are em-ployed or continuing their education—ACE students are success-
ful!
The afternoon session focused on Social Services available in
Douglas County and the recurrent theme was collaboration. These services are organized through the provision of available federal and state funding, in addition to relying on the resources of non-prof its, the faith community and partners to work to-
gether to avoid duplication of services. All panel participants were in agreement that without each other, and a host of volun-teers and connections, Douglas County non-profits would not be as effective as they are, in serving the tens of thousands in need
within our county. Represented on the panel were s taff mem-bers of Douglas County, DC Human Services, Women’s Crisis and Family Center, Douglas/Elbert Task Force and DC Youth Initia-tive. The commitment of the panelists to those they serve, and
why they do what they do, was palpable. Students ended the day as a client, during a mock exercise, accessing services from
the various county agencies.
