A Message From Ms Gates and Ms Flohil We are so very proud of our students at Stonehaven. Several of our students performed at our sharing assembly on February 22. They shared songs, dances and slide shows. Their behav-iour at the assembly was extremely respectful. It was wonder-ful to see how effectively the school’s technology was used to enhance the learning of our students. We thank all of the par-ents who were able to attend. Our movie night was also a great success and as a result we will have another one in the spring on May 29th. More details will be sent home closer to the date. The next School Council meetings will take place on April 16

and May 13. Please mark your calendar as we welcome all. Please note that the school will be closed for March break from March 11 to 15. We welcome students back on March 18. The school is also closed for Good Friday (March 29) and Easter Monday (April 1). Safe Arrival Please remember to call the school (905) 898-2077 when your child is absent, even if they are just going to be late. The an-swering machine is put on nightly so can be used to leave a message at any time that staff are not there. We have to ac-count for every child every day. We will attempt to contact you if you have forgotten to call the school, but in the event that we cannot get hold of you, Safe School Policy states that we are to call the Police.

Bus Cancellation Reminder Hopefully there will be no more bus cancellations this school year, but in the event that buses are cancelled in the morning due to weather, they WILL NOT be running in the afternoon either. If you bring your child to school on a cancellation day, YOU MUST make arrangements to have them picked up at 2:55 p.m. It is also very important on these days that parents of non-bus students call the school to report that they will not be attending school. (Safe arrival has to be carried out for all walkers and we would hate to be making unnecessary calls if we actually had a child missing on their way to school). ONLY bus students are excused from attendance on these days. Entry Times Change As of March 18th the entry bell will ring at 8:25. Students will line up at their designated doors and be escorted into the school by their teachers or a staff member. Yard Supervision Outside yard supervision of students begins at 8:10 a.m. daily Please do NOT send your children to arrive at school before this time.

Fire Route Parking and Kiss and Ride We'd like to remind parents NOT to park their cars in the designated Fire Route. As well as putting the safety of our students at risk, should an emergency occur, this offence can result in a $100.00 fine from the Town of Newmarket. Please remember that the Kiss and Ride is a drop off zone ONLY. Please do NOT park in the Kiss and Ride and chat with your friends or walk your child(ren) into the yard while others are trying to drop off their children. Let’s help keep all of our kids safe. People have also been failing to stop at the stop signs before our crosswalks. Please take extra care and caution when driving on our school property. We need everyone to be patient and exercise a high level of caution. The best way to teach our children to follow rules is to lead by example. Grade 8 Countdown Yes! We have reached the time of year when our Grade 8 students have completed option forms for secondary school and are working towards their last term in elementary school. Expectations are that our Grade 8 students work to their utmost potential to achieve academic success for the final term’s report card. As well, they should be displaying mature, responsible behaviour to act as a role model for students in lower grades. Graduation will occur on Monday, June 24th at Newmarket H.S. Theatre with the dance to follow at the Police Shed (corner of Stonehaven and Bayview). Graduations photos will be taken on March 22nd. We are looking for Grade 7 parents to help out with Graduation Our Grade 8 students are quickly approaching Graduation! At Stonehaven Elementary School, it is tradition for the Grade 7 parents to help with Graduation decorations, set up and also during the party helping to replenish snacks, refreshments and clean up. We are looking for Grade 7 parents that can give of their time on graduation day - Monday, June 24, 2013 at Newmarket High School and at the Police Association (Shed). Set up will begin around 3:30 p.m. and the evening will conclude around 11 p.m. Please call the school if you are able to help out in any way (905) 898-2077. Graduation Planning Meeting: Tuesday, March 26th at 5pm

From the Library The Book Fair was a great success! Thanks to all those who participated and helped to put more books back into the classrooms. Speaking of books. please look around the house for over-due/lost library books. Can you spare an hour every now and then? If so, Mrs. Claus could use some help to sort/shelf books. Please call her at 905-898-2077, 125. Have You Explored TED Talks? http://www.ted.com/talks The world is full of interesting and provocative people. Ted talks range of short snippets to longer lectures on an extremely wide range of topics. Below is an introduction and link to an inspiring talk. “When he was just 14 years old, Malawian inventor Wil-liam Kamkwamba built his family an electricity-generating windmill from spare parts, working from rough plans he found in a library book.

To power his family's home, young William Kamkwamba built an electricity-producing windmill from spare parts and scrap -- starting him on a surprising journey detailed in the new book, "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind." http://www.ted.com/talks/william_kamkwamba_on_building_a_windmill.html

Aerosols Banned From School We have a number of staff and students that have allergies to scents and they cause severe asthma attacks. Due to this reason aerosol deodorant is BANNED from school. Students may bring stick deodorant. If students bring these prod-ucts, the products will be taken away and a parent/guardian will have to pick them up in June. Inferring - How’s it Going? Well, we have been focusing on inferring for the last cou-ple months and we are seeing many different ways that kids are extending thinking and supporting their ideas while learning to infer. We have been looking at; pictures, posters, videos, songs, picture books, commercials, novels, print ads, dramatic presentations, poetry and many more types of texts. Most of our students have been using or-ganizers of different styles to help determine the main in-gredients of an inference. Ask your child what they have been doing in class while learning how to infer. Here are some “look for” points that you can think about in your own child’s learning to infer journey. Key Skills in Inferring:

can identify and describe the facts of a situation from the text can identify a relevant generalization can make reasonable extensions to what is given in the text clues the extension made is based on a sound generaliza-tion the inference is related to what is given in the text can give reason that support the stated inference from background knowledge and text clues

Please consider these skills at a level appropriate for your child and in using them with a variety of texts. Happy inferring!

Dr. Craig is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Queen's University. She is co-leading PREVNet (Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network), a network to stop bullying in Canada. Her research focuses on healthy relationships, bullying and victimization. She has won many distinguished awards in recognition of her work. She regularly speaks to parents, educations, and professionals working with youth.

Bullying is a significant problem in our society and can have a significant impact on children’s lives. In addition to traditional forms of bullying, online bullying through the use of technology is a serious concern. Technologies are changing the way we communicate, access, and share information. The Internet has opened the door to new learning and teaching opportunities. It has also raised issues about privacy, online respect, safety and appropriate uses for technology. Parents are critical in assisting their children in developing increased awareness, understanding and skills about being good digital citizens including an understanding of digital etiquette and appropriate use of the internet to promote safety online. Together with schools, parents can provide education how it affects others, to think and plan for using technology in the most appropriate way. The goal of this presentation is to empower parents in supporting their children by increasing their understanding about online and offline bullying and by providing concrete strategies to address it effectively in partnership with the school.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR QSP MAGAZINE FUNDRAISER!

Even though our main fundraising campaign is over, you can still support our school by purchasing

or renewing magazine subscriptions on line at

www.QSP.ca Each subscription that we sell continues to bring profit to our school.

This can be done all year long, so if you have any additional magazines expiring soon or just forgot to order a favorite one,

you may still do so and support our school! Remember if you renew with the publishers directly, the school does NOT receive profits.

Please DO NOT renew with the publishers. Thank you.

If you ever have any questions about your subscriptions, please call QSP Customer Service at 1-800-667-2536
