    EXHIBITIONFLIES BY DAY IN SUNSHINE7 29 March 2014

    An exhibition of newly commissioned work, Flies by Day in Sunshine seesthe (fictional) inauguration of the islands first annual SLENDER SCOTCHBURNET MOTH community parade.

    The day-flying Slender Scotch Burnet Moth is one of 6 species of Burnetmoth all of which are endangered, 5 can be found in the British Isles andone that lives exclusively on the Isles of Mull, Ulva and Gometra. Coincidingwith the year of the International Burnet Moth Conference on Mull inSeptember 2014, this multifaceted project celebrates one of the islandsrarest and most stunning species of wildlife.

    Including sculpture, costume design plus a new fictionalised account ofthe moth, the project will observe in red and black the final stages ofmetamorphosis of the islands Burnet larvae into moths, taking to thewing from mid-June. Visitors to the gallery can don one of 20 handmadewoolen moth hoods, one of which will fire into the ai r her 5ft proboscis incommemoration of this extraordinary island icon.

    The exhibition draws from a myriad of references including contemporaryfiction, new nature writing, superhero comics, and Disney animation plusreal accounts from the entomological world including tales of wholesalecaterpillar theft and cyanide poisoning.

    COMAR invites artist Lauren Godfrey to produce a new body of artwork inresponse to the islands flourishing food industry.For her new commission by Comar of three aqua-cut linoleum floordesigns, Godfrey responds to Scotlands and specifically Mulls newfood producers, and to the often-romantic language and imagery used tocommunicate their provenance. Mulleachs & Molluscs, her welcome matto An Tobar proclaims. Both are welcome here.

Their musicis strongly rooted in tradition yetforward looking, introspectiveyet universal, straightforward yetcomplex. Their album JaggedLand is out now.
