“For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, but God’s gift, so that no one can boast about it.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (GNT)

As a pastor’s kid, Jackie had earned a Master’s degree in goodness by age 10. He could spout off Bible verses by heart and excelled at following all the rules. When he came of age, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a pastor. By sheer willpower, he rigorously pursued holy living largely through doing good deeds. He visited prisoners in their cells, ministered to the sick, gave aid to the poor, and served as an overseas missionary. If anyone had built a resume of goodness, Jackie had.

But then life happened. A broken engagement. A falling out with the church he served. Inner doubts and fears left him unsure whether he even knew God. Something was missing.

One night Jackie reluctantly went to a prayer meeting with some friends. Much to his surprise, as he listened to the speaker, he felt his heart “strangely warmed.” The very thing he’d been searching for his whole life, he finally found — Christ’s personal forgiveness of his sins. And he was so shocked to discover what he had to do for it — nothing! Like scales falling from his eyes, Jackie saw for the first time the futility of depending on his own goodness. He experienced what we call grace, the undeserved love of God poured into his heart.

Some of us know Jackie (his mother’s pet name for him) better as John, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Until that prayer meeting, John had been trying to earn something God was giving away for free. That night a deep truth sunk into his soul: it’s not about what he could do for God, but what God could do for him. By the gift of God’s grace, his sins were wiped away, and he was empowered to live a new life. That’s the gift of God’s grace.

In our current series, Grace Space, we are putting a laser-like focus on the most life-changing force in the universe, the grace of God. I hope you will pick up Max Lucado’s book, GRACE: More Than We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine, at our Welcome Center, jumpinto a class or small group, and allow God to strangely warm your heart. Your life will never be the same.

On the journey with you,

During the season of Lent, our congregation will be reading Grace: More Than

We Deserve, Greater Than We Imagine, by Max Lucado. In this book, Lucado

reminds us that grace is an offer to live a changed life, a call to genuine

transformation, and a gift of courage to see it through. Our sermon series

through Lent will be “Grace Space,” based on this book, and our classes and

small groups will focus on the topic of grace. For more information, contact

LENT ALL-CHURCH BOOK STUDY!

Spring Cantata ~ The Easter StoryThe New Life Adult Choir and Youth Choir will present a Spring Cantata, The Easter Story, accompanied by a full symphony orchestra on May 17 at the 9:00am traditional service. The Easter Story retells Jesus’ suffering, death, resurrection, and exaltation at the right hand of the Father in a story that engages the heart, mind, and imagination. The music draws upon different styles and sources, including gospel, folksongs, traditional hymn arrangements in symphonic style, spirituals in contemporary style, as well as new anthems composed by contemporary composers such as Ola Gjeilo and Robert Ray.

If you are interested in singing The Easter Story with us, join us on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm in the Choir room (Room 22). We will spend about 35 minutes practicing the Cantata each week. If you love music and this sounds like something you would enjoy on a short-term basis, we invite you to give it a try! You may come any Thursday evening your schedule permits, and you only need to attend the beginning 35 minutes of the New Life Choir rehearsals.

For more information, contact See Tsai Chan at [email protected].

Youth ChoirSpringfield First’s Youth Choir is so touched by our church’s love and generosity! Thank you so much

for supporting us at our Applebee’s fundraiser. We were grateful to see so many of our church family there, and we were blessed by your donations. We have two more delicious fundraisers

coming up that you won’t want to miss! On March 28 and 29, we will have our annual Palm Sunday bake sale during the weekend services. We hope you’ll stop by and grab some tasty treats, pastries, and your Easter Sunday cakes! Please also be sure to mark your calendars for the evening of April

18, as the Youth Choir will be putting on a Variety Show in the gym at 6:45pm, following the Saturday evening service. Come for an evening of great food, delightful music, and talent acts put on by

individuals from our youth choir! Admission is free, and donations are much appreciated. All proceeds from these fundraisers will go towards our choir tour to Atlanta, GA, in June.

The money given enables our youth choir to go and share the grace and love of Christ through music to nursing homes, children’s hospitals, and churches in the Atlanta area. In past years, the choir tour has been encouraging to those we have the privilege of serving

and life-changing for our youth as we reach out to learn and grow to live as Christ did. We are looking forward to the opportunity once more

to serve and love through music this June!

We are making great progress! As some of you know, the beautiful facility we enjoy each week still carries a significant amount of debt. Our church family has done a phenomenal job in reducing that debt over the last 7 years from $11.2 million to $6.6 million as of February 23, 2015.

Here’s the latest on what God is doing through you.In April of 2014, 317 individuals or families made three-year giving commitments totaling over $1.7 million.

The total amount received at the end of December is $587,312.88. Praise God!

Our Momentum giving journey is having a tremendous impact by reducing our loan balance and paying our monthly mortgage. We reduceour principle each month by about $37,000!

Of course, each dollar we pay down in principle releases more money for hands-on ministry that saves and changes lives in our community and world.

As we approach the one-year anniversary of our Momentum giving journey on April 25-26, we will be inviting all those that have not yet made a commitment to join hundreds of others in making

a two-year commitment to Momentum. We really do believe we can remove this barrier to our future growth and release more resources to change lives. Please begin to pray for what God may want to give through you to make the future bright for so many.

Thank you for the extravagant generosity you have shown in many ways. You are a beautiful reflection of the giving heart of God.

With Joy,

PRAYER OPPORTUNITY: PASTORS’ PRAYER PARTNERS GROUPPrayer is vital to our spiritual journey as we grow from one

stage to the next, and lifting our pastors and church in prayer

is one of the greatest ways we can support the mission and

vision of Springfield First. The Pastors’ Prayer Partners group

aims to do just that. The group meets the first Saturday of

every month at 7:30am, with men meeting in Room 2, and

women meeting in Room 5. Our pastors share with us their

joys and concerns, and we spend time praying specifically

for them.

Together we also discuss a portion of a book, which

is currently Too Busy Not to Pray, by Bill Hybels. While

reading it before the meeting is excellent prep work, those

who have not yet read it are able to join in the discussion

easily as well. If you have questions or would like more

information, contact Cindy Arnold at [email protected].

PRAYER RETREAT AT THE CHIARA CENTERSunday, March 22, 2015 1:30 – 5:00pm

In this loud and busy world, we know we have

to seek out stillness. God meets us there when

we do. Scripture says that Jesus often prayed

alone, and following His example can help us

build our relationship with Him. Our prayer

retreat at the Chiara Center is open to anyone

seeking time alone with God. For those hoping

to hear a specific answer or just yearning to bask

in God’s presence, this free retreat is open to

people of all ages. Throughout the afternoon

you can spend time with God in the quiet

sanctuary or walk the beautiful grounds. At

1:30pm we will gather for a brief orientation

about how you might spend your afternoon,

and we will gather together again for a quick

recap just before 5:00pm. The Chiara Center is

located at 4875 LaVerna Road, Springfield

62707. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Atrium,

but you are welcome regardless! A free will

CLASS OPPORTUNITIES

MARCH 2015 9

G6 CLASSEver wonder what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? Well, our “G6” class will describe exactly

what that looks like here at Springfield First. Beginning on Monday, April 13, at 6:30-8:00pm, we will go through six characteristics of a deeply devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, all beginning with the letter “G.”

Week 1, April 13 – Glory

Worshipping God - joyfully and intentionally living in the presence of God both privately and publicly.

Week 2, April 20 – Grace Imparting Christ’s Love - personally accepting the unmerited love of God offered

in Jesus Christ and naturally sharing Christ’s love with spiritual explorers.

Week 3, April 27 – Growth Celebrating spiritual disciplines - taking personal responsibility for our spiritual journey

by practicing spiritual disciplines that move us to Christ-centered living.

Week 4, May 4 – Group Doing life together - regularly connecting with other disciples in a smaller number to taste

grace, apply Scripture, and be encouraged to become like Christ in thought, word, and action.

Week 5, May 11 – Giftedness Serving others - seeing our identity as a servant, discovering our spiritual gifts, deploying them in ministry under God’s direction, and developing them to their fullest potential.

Week 6, May 18 – Generosity

Sharing compassionately - knowing all of life belongs to God and seeking to bring Christ’s healing, justice, and hope to those in need.

Sign up in the Atrium or by contacting the church office at 793-9760.

Preschool KidLifeJesus tells us to “love one another.” What does that

even look like? Well, it looks a lot like the way Jesus

loved people when He was here on earth. Through

everything He did and the stories He told, Jesus

taught us to love one another. We want to teach our

preschoolers to love like Jesus. We’ll start the month

with some of the stories Jesus told, the parables.

We’ll end the month with the joyous celebration

of Palm Sunday. As Jesus entered Jerusalem on

Palm Sunday, He was preparing for the ultimate

act of love. He truly exemplified the verse, “love

one another.” We pray that through this month’s

lessons, our preschoolers learn to love like Jesus.

Elementary KidLifeAs followers of Christ, “I can trust God no matter

what” is a phrase we all say. And for the most part

we sincerely believe it and live it out. We trust God

to provide for our basic needs, for our safety, even

for our health and well-being. But there are certain

moments when trusting God seems just a bit more

difficult – often those are the times when we’re

forced to wait. The Bible is full of stories and

principles that help us realize the importance

of discovering how to be patient, and that’s

what we’ll be talking about this month.

God’s love and grace are gifts we could never

have done anything to deserve. In fact, as often

as we mess up, we make a better case for not

deserving them. But, even so, God wants us to

have those gifts…and all we have to do is receive

them. That’s what the youth will be looking at in

March, following along with the entire church

using Max Lucado’s book, Grace: Greater than

We Deserve, More than We Can Imagine.

What is grace? How can I accept the gift?

And what does it mean for my life? Be there!

With the new charter of Troop 13 in 1980, Kyle Rominger was the first to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout in January of 1984. Thirty years later Jay Rigby, son of Tim and Pam Rigby, became the 100th Eagle Scout when he earned the award in October of 2014. Counting the prior 1920–1960’s charters and the current charter since 1980, FUMC has sponsored a total of 170 Eagle Scouts.

THANK YOU for your generous gift of $15,966.85 to equip 2 Sensory Rooms in Chaddock’s New School. One of the best ways to change the future is to invest in an effective education for children. The good that will spring from your gift is not limited to increasing the number of children we serve. The educational and therapeutic quality of the school environment will be dramatically improved for all of the children, speeding up their progress and improving their outcomes. The most important gains are the most difficult to see – a child whose life and future has literally been changed forever. That is the most exciting and meaningful result of your support. We are profoundly grateful to work in partnership with you to do something no less important than change the future for Chaddock children.
