Lenten Prayers

“…But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:6 “…Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” Mark 1:35

The word “Lent” in Latin means “Spring,” or “the Light increases.” We have lived through a dark and very cold winter, but we also know the sun’s rays will get warmer each day. With longer days, the ground will soon wake up and again teem with life. It is no accident that God chose this Lenten season of renewed life to have His Son go to the cross for you. The suffering and Resurrection of Jesus is what gives us new life as Christians. The dark winter of

sin is overcome by the Light of Christ. On our journey to the cross, Lent is also a time for prayer and reflection about your relationship with Jesus.

In our church sanctuary we should never be ashamed to pray publicly to God, or to do so in harmony with a group of other Believ-ers. Jesus was often seen praying in public, such as in the Temple (Jn 12:27), feeding the 5,000 (Mt 14:23) or even on the cross (Lk 23:34).

But, like Jesus, the majority of our prayers are done silently and directly to God. When you think about it, we realize this is the most intimate thing we can do in this life as a child of your Creator. We should not be afraid to pray in private, as such prayers are a connec-tion between you and your Lord, for reasons only known between the two.

And what do we pray in these most intimate moments? The same things we pray for in our sanctuary; that we adore our Savior, that

(Continued from page 1)

we give thanks for all good things He has given us and to lay your trou-bles at His feet.

Regarding adoration, Martin Luther had difficulty telling God in pray-er that he loved Him during the first part of the reformer’s life. As a no-vate monk, Luther only saw God as a stern Father who could never be pleased. Martin was convinced he had to “do something” in order to get God’s favor. He just didn’t know what.

Luther found the answer, as we all must, in Holy Scripture. As Pastor Hanan often tells us, your relationship with God began with Him making the “first move.” John 3:16 says it best, “…for God so loved the world He gave His only son…” God loved you first. The prayer of adoration simply says, “I love you too.” Does your Savior want to hear this in your prayers? Like all living beings, yes He does.

Giving thanks is perhaps the easiest of the three reasons to pray. In our daily walk we don’t have to look very hard to find blessings in our lives. To simply know you have a relationship with God is the best gift of all, followed by physical things such as health, relatives, a warm place, friends and even those possessions that we have temporary cus-tody of. It is like that old Amish prayer: “…all this bread and Jesus too!”

And then there are the troubles in this life. Just having a Savior to privately tell your troubles to is a blessing in itself. It is human nature to think, “I don’t want to burden Jesus with my troubles,” but Christ wants you to give Him your troubles. First of all, a Believer will have troubles in this life: “a righteous man may have many troubles” (Ps 34:19). But, 2nd Corinthians 1:3-4 says, “…our Lord Jesus Christ…who comforts us in all our troubles…” When you think about it, all troubles in this life, even death itself, are temporary.

As a Christian, you have solace that Christ is greater than anything this world may throw at you. Is there anything in life that God can’t han-dle? Is there any trouble you would want to face without the comfort of the Holy Spirit?

As Believers, we need to cultivate a habit of regular, private prayer to Jesus. Each day for a brief time and away from the noise of the world, go to that special place where you can be alone with Jesus. For, as it says in 1 John 5:14-15, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He will hear us. And, if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him.”

As your Easter journey unfolds in the weeks leading to the cross, turn to your living Savior in prayer, praise and song. And on that Easter morning we will say…”He has Risen! He has Risen Indeed!”

St. John’s Lutheran Mission $ at Work Enclosed you will find an envelope supporting our 2015 Lenten Gift Program. Many Buffalo and Wright County families are in need of assistance for their food. Being mindful of the needs of others is one of the most gracious things we can do. Each March, Minnesota Food Share directs the March Campaign, the largest food drive in the state and restocks 300 food shelves across Minnesota. It recruits thousands of congregations, companies, schools and civic groups to run local food and fund drives to aid in the effort. Our donations will stay with our local Buffalo Food Shelf and will be matched by Thrivent up to a total of $500.00. Over the years our congregation has been generous with offerings of food items and the monthly requested items. It is known, however, that cash donations go a lot further when it comes to buying food. The volunteers at the Food Shelf have access to purchasing food in larger quantities at better pricing than we as individuals can purchase at the grocery store. For example, with as little as $1.50 the Food Shelf can buy a case of green beans from Second Harvest. Some months when food donations are down, the money is used to purchase food locally. Please drop your Gold Gift envelope in the offering plate by Easter Sunday, April 5th. Make checks payable to St. John’s Lutheran Church with a memo for the Buffalo Food Shelf. This way you will receive credit on your year-end Offering Statement. Your donation will be matched by Thrivent. May God continue to Bless each of you for your generosity and love given toward this mission outreach.

Easter Bible Study “Our Passion Journey”

Join Pastor Taylor for a special Easter Bible study Sundays at 9:10 during Lent. Each class is a “stand-alone topic”: feel free to join at any time. Seminary-level

notes and charts will be provided. Topics: Mar.1—The Word Became Flesh (John 1:1) Mar. 8—Old Testament Lenten Prophecies Mar. 15—New Testament Lenten Passages Mar. 22—”Tetelestai” (“It is finished”) Bring your favorite Bible. We’ll meet in the upstairs conference room.

Interested in Quilting? The St. John's Quilting Group is looking for individuals

to help sew quilt tops for the Country Fair. A

community crafting day will be held at St. John's on

Saturday, March 7th, from 8 am - 8 pm. We will hold a little

quilting "seminar" for anyone interested. We have the material

and patterns, and are willing to get you started. Join us on March

7th and invite along anyone else who might be interested.

Dear Friends in Christ. We do not know who you are. We do thank God for you and for your kind gifts to enable us to visit sisters in Indiana. We will do this early in March after a series of injections to finish treatment for my knee. We cannot measure your kindness, except to say that you are a blessing. Helen and Pastor Klemz

Women In Mission Pick up your new 2015 St. John’s Women in Mission booklet at the

display by the kitchen, narthex, or call the church office for a copy. It contains board member contacts and duties, the meeting and events calendar, additional committees and circles info, and opportunities for St. John’s women. The booklet showcases “The Time Is Now,” a nation-al 2015 LWML initiative to help refocus on basic common core values: being in God’s word, missions, service, and fellowship. They indicate it is “imperative, even urgent, that women share with other women the contagious joy that results from being a member of LWML!”

The 2015 Women in Mission booklet isn’t complete. There are emp-ty spots where names and contact numbers should be. St. John’s needs a Country Fair Chairperson to guide the committee, and WIM Chair. Pat Norine has graciously served as Interim Chair for over one year. We recently welcomed Mary Bremmer as our new Secretary and I moved to Vice Chair, where my main fo-cus is to find ways to reach out, support and touch ALL wom-en of St. John’s, whatever their age, family situation, back-ground or strength. You may have heard that the seven most expensive words in business are, “But we’ve always done it that way!” I don’t like that phrase either. Fresh ideas are needed to develop mean-ingful missions, service, and fellowship that brings contagious joy to St. John’s women, and increases participation.

Jim Collins wrote a heavily researched book titled Good to Great; Why Some Companies Make the Leap…and Others Don’t. He won-

dered how companies achieved enduring greatness. Borrow my worn-out copy any time. Here are some points of special interest: 10 of 11 great CEOs came from inside the company. Their ambition was first and foremost for the institution, not themselves. They didn’t adhere to the “hedgehog concept” which basically states that just because something is your core business or event doesn’t mean it needs to stay. They maintained unwavering faith they can and will prevail. Per-

haps the most fascinating component of Good to Great was this: A great management team followed a “First Who, Then What” concept. They first got the right people on the bus. Once that happened, they next figured out the best path to greatness.

Based on Collins’ research, St. John’s has everything needed to be a great organization: gifted internal members who are dedicated to church and service, who recognize the value of increased fellowship with other women, and offer fresh ideas and opinions. Most important-ly, we have a wonderful basis and leader for all that we do: God and His words. We maintain an unwavering faith and urge you to join the

15

Women in Mission and Country Fair teams so we can together figure out the best path to greatness.

Don’t let your family situation and schedule discourage participation. If you need child care, rides to meetings and events, can’t make a meeting during certain set times…let a board member know. We will work with you.

Pastor’s Report & Worship Report: Pastor Meyer absent. Youth Ministry: Chris Ryan had written report but also touched on the all-night event on Jan. 23rd being interesting and fun. The Pizza Ranch Fundraiser was well attended and he is pleased to report approximately $730 dollars were made, new experience for him. He has fulfilled part of his requirements for Concordia by spending 4 days in Seward. Lent suppers are starting and he is looking for help in making the main dish for the night, please contact him if you would like to help or have ideas. As of this meeting there were 10 couples signed up to use the Parent’s Night Out fundraiser for babysitting on Feb. 14th. In March his Supervisor from Concordia will return to St. John’s.

Child & Family Ministry: Kelly Thole added to her written report mentioning a new class “Teach Me to Pray” which is for Kindergarteners and parents, on Feb 8th and 15th. She has created a prayer wall for the Sunday school called “Pray in Color” offering the children an opportunity to pray for what’s on their heart and choose a colored ribbon to represent that by placing it on the wall. M&M tubes will be handed out for the children to enjoy the treat and then refill the tube with quarters and return them to help provide food for people around the world. March 1st Kelly will be using the Adult Bible Study for 3 weeks, usually held by Pastor Meyer, to discuss the topic Sticky Faith. This year the Journey to the Cross will be held on a Sunday with a different type of format. There will also be a new type of card placed in the pews.
