The Lions Club ‘Youth of the Year Quest’ is designed
to encourage and evolve leadership skills in addition
with citizenship qualities to further develop youths of
our generation into first class citizens. It is opened to
youths from the ages of 15-18 and encompasses
several interviews and public speaking functions and
judged on qualities in leadership, personality,
sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship. I
was fortunate to be nominated to represent the college
and made it to the final round where I competed in the
public speaking component on February 25th .
The public speaking night was held at Quatrefoils
restaurant at Catholic Regional College. Other
competitors were from CRC and Melbourne High. The
night was divided into two parts. We were asked two
impromptu questions, ensuring that we talked for two
minutes on each question. The next section was delivering our prepared speeches which
allowed us to speak for 5 minutes on any given topic that we chose. In between these sections,
we enjoyed wonderful meals prepared by Catholic Regional College’s VET Hospitality
students.
By the end of the night it wasn’t so much about the competition or about who I was up against,
it was more about who I was sharing this experience with! For our community to acknowledge
our youth that are doing extraordinary things is awesome. I was awarded the Youth of the
Year Award nomination by the Taylors Lakes Lions Club to go onto competing in the next
level of the national competition. I would like to thank Mr Greechan, Mr Dedes and Mr Pell for
allowing me to take part in this opportunity. I would also like to thank Taylors Lakes Lions
Club for hosting this incredible event that continues to celebrate the youth in our community.

LIONS CLUB YOUTH OF THE YEAR
Two weeks ago, our school rewarded us with a beautiful
brand new black Yamaha GCIM grand piano. It’s a
masterpiece – polished, shiny, with full resonant tone, a
perfect medium for pianists to express themselves. We are
amazed with its tonal richness, dynamic range and color.
The keyboard is an absolute pleasure to use, offering impeccable control that encourages us to
reach for a new level of musical expression. It is located in on the teaching studios of the new
Performing Arts Centre. Having this piano, we can now expand our abilities in piano playing. As piano students in the school’s
Instrumental Music Program, we are honoured to have this opportunity to practise and perform on a more professional level. We
will definitely aim higher and work harder. We are ever-so grateful for the support from the college. We will definitely take very
good care of it. Sincere thanks!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL CLASS
College Council Election
At close of nominations, I had received
seven nominations in the Parent
Member category of College Council.
As such an election is required. A
ballot paper was posted out to each
family in the College last Tuesday.
This comprised of the following
A return envelope
An envelope to be placed inside
which contains the actual ballot
paper
A copy of a brief statement from
each of the candidates
I ask all parents to please return the
ballot paper (properly sealed) to the
College office by Thursday March 19th
(4 p.m. closing). Ballot papers can
either be posted back to the College to
reach by Thursday March 19th or
alternatively placed directly in the
ballot box on the front counter of the
office. In order for the vote to be
counted the name of the voter is to be
shown on the external envelope (which
is stored separately to the actual ballot
paper).
Please note that the next meeting of
College Council has had to be put back
by one week to Wednesday March 25th
due to the necessity of running the
election.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held
on Monday March 23rd from 1.30 until
4 p.m. and then from 5 p.m. until 8
p.m. Please note that this year the
interim report sheet will be available
on Compass as well as being posted
out to parents early this week. This
will indicate specifically where
teachers have requested an interview,
however I remind all parents that
interviews with any of your child’s
teachers are possible and encouraged.
Expansion of our Music Program
It is great to see our music students
making use of the brand new grand
piano that we have just purchased
within our music program. Over the
last few years we have seen some
amazing results from the keyboard
program and having access to a quality
instrument such as this will only serve
to further assist our students within the
program.
Building Works
I am still in negotiation with the
Department in relation to the replacement
of the Gym floor. I hope this will be
sorted out very quickly now and will
advise further as I am informed. At the
same time we are proceeding with
planning to extend our Foods teaching
area and plans are now drawn up and
being costed for this project.
Camps I had the pleasure of visiting our Year 12
camp two weeks ago. This was the biggest
group that we have had on camp at Year
12 and the feedback from both students
and staff was very positive. The students
were exposed to some quality
presentations along with a range of team
building and challenging activities and of
course some study as well. I would like to
congratulate all of the students involved
on a wonderful camp and for the staff for
the effort put in to make sure the camp
was such a great event.
Similarly we took away a large group of
Year 7 students on their orientation camp
last week. I was able to drop in on the
camp briefly and took the opportunity to
talk to quite a lot of the students
individually and in small groups. Perhaps
the most striking feature of that experience
was seeing how well students have settled
in, and especially in mixing with students
from other primary schools and other
classes. Thankyou also to the large group
of staff who took part in that camp as well.
Already we have held our first Outdoor
and Environmental Education camp this
year to the Grampians. The preparation
put into these camps is incredibly
comprehensive and it is a credit to the
staff involved as well as the students. Last
year we gained some outstanding results
in this VCE study. I encourage parents to
read about the wonderful, broad and
challenging range of activities that
students in this subject take on alongside
the manner in which students are given
opportunities to appreciate the
environments in which they find
themselves.
Homestay 2015
We are currently trying to finalise the
plans for homestay hosts for our visitors
from Italy in Term 3. Most of the students
will be studying around levels 9,10 and
11. It really is lots of fun for all of the
students as both a host and as a visitor. I
sincerely ask for support to call for
around 25 volunteers across the College
for the stay of around 7 days. Having
hosted numerous times as a parent as
well as for staff I can assure you it
really is a great experience. Please
consider taking this on. Most of the
students on this occasion speak very
good English as well as Italian.
Student Representative Council
The SRC is now well and truly up and
running with a long list of challenges,
issues and projects in which they will
involve themselves. A recent highlight
was the full day training session. I shall
be meeting with the Executive or the
whole group regularly throughout the
year.
Parking Around the College
Parents are reminded that there are
parking restrictions around the College,
especially in relation to areas adjacent to
school crossings. Brimbank City
Council parking officers are regularly
monitoring these areas looking out for
any cars which pull into these no
standing zones, even very temporarily to
drop off children. Motorists who do this
are regularly fined by the Council,
receiving an infringement notice in the
post.
The College Car Park
The internal carparks are not available
for drop off and collection of students.
We have had several dangerous
situations where a student has been
dropped off inside the grounds of the
College in what is a very congested and
busy area. I ask any parent who does
endeavor to drop their child off inside
the grounds to cease this practice.
Students not feeling well
If a student is feeling unwell it is vital
that the student initially reports to sick
bay. We sometimes have situations
where a student contacts the parent and
the parent arrives at school to collect the
student without any knowledge of the
School Nurse. I remind all students and
parents that it is vital that we follow the
accepted procedure where a student sees
the school nurse initially.

TOP CLASS: ASHLEIGH KENNEDY
Congratulations to Ashleigh Kennedy, Year 12 student in 2014
who has been chosen from a VCAA selection panel to perform
in the Top Class Concert on Thursday, March 26 at 2pm at the
Melbourne Recital Centre as part of the 2015 VCE Season of
Excellence.
The concert showcases students from 2014 Music Performance
Exam who achieved top marks in the state for their examinations. The concert covers,
Classical, Contemporary, Solo and Group students. Mr Di Clemente will be accompanying
Ashleigh for one of the two songs she will be performing, 'Orange Blossoms in
Summertime' (a 'Jazz Ballad'). Ashleigh’s second song will be a 'Swing' song called 'The
Frim Fram Sauce', for which she will use a backing track.
This time last year, Ashleigh was inspired by the 2014 Top Class Concert and set a goal for herself to be singing in this year’s
concert. We are all very proud of Ashleigh’s achievements and wish her the very best for her performance. She worked very
hard throughout the year and deserves every success.

YEAR 12 CAMP: CAMP HOWQUA - FEBRUARY 23rd - 25th
We started our journey on the Monday where we departed from Taylors Lakes at 8:00am.
Despite being early morning, all Year 12s loaded their luggage onto the 3 buses and headed on
a 3 hour road trip. From the minor pit stops to the rural towns of Yea and Mansfield, we finally
arrived at the campsite, motivated to have an awesome time. Cabins and activity groups were
assigned and students began their activities with excitement. Day 1 saw all four seasons in one
day, from humidity to a massive down pour of rain but this did not stop the enthusiasm of the
students in undertaking the activities. The water slide was a hit with many students hesitant to
go on initially on seeing the size of the waterslide, though by the end of the session, I could say
with confidence they kept on going back for more even if there were a few bumps down the
slide. By the end of the day, 100% of students participated in their first activity which included
attractions like the flying fox, the high ropes, archery, horse riding, orienteering and the
occasional leisure and study break. Night activities focused around student motivation, study
and welfare including a session from our guest speaker Nathan Strempel. Nathan also led the
trivia session that evening and the laughs continued well into the night. A special mention goes
to Corey for his rendition of Uptown Funk and Yianni’s version of Shake It Off. The next day,
the team building activities continued and most got to experience the Survivor Challenge
where students in teams competed against each other for ultimate supremacy. After that, teams
cooled off in the inviting “mud pit” there was nothing more ‘inviting’ than going into a dank,
filthy pit of malignant ooze. After a hot shower and a quick moment of relaxation, we headed
for our disco with lights and glow sticks and our resident DJ, DJ Whitey. All students had an
incredible experience. I would like to congratulate all students that participated on the camp
and to all the staff that attended. Many thanks to our photographers that captured every
moment.

YEAR 7 PARENT BARBECUE
As part of the Transition program of the College, a barbecue for Year 7
parents and students was held at the college on Tuesday, February 17th
from 5.30pm to 7.00 pm. The event allowed parents to meet many of the
Year 7 teachers, discuss how students have settled and view the Year 7
area where students spend much of their learning time. More than 150
parents and students attended the evening allowing for the formation of a
stronger relationship between the college and the community.
Many thanks to parents, students and teachers that attended and to the
Year 12 Student Leaders (Stefan Mavleris, Stefania Valerio, Mitchell
Gration, Melanie Abdeen, Yasemin Erden, Amelia Hill, Jordan
Karipoglou) and Home Economics teachers (Ms Johnson, Ms Swingler,
Ms Parkinson) for all their support with the food preparation.

YEAR 11 HARD ROCK TRIP
As part of the Year 11 Outdoor and
Environmental Studies class, several students
got the opportunity to head to Hard Rock
Indoor Climbing Centre in the CBD to test
their climbing skills before their upcoming
camp to Mt Arapiles. Many were in awe of
the height of the walls but soon overcame
their fears to climb walls that at times had
them 15 metres up and negotiating
overhanging holds.
Students then had the opportunity to explore
outdoor gear stores in the CBD to gain an
understanding of how technology has
developed in the sport. I would like to thank
the Year 11 class for getting outside of their
comfort zone and Miss McAlister for all of
her assistance on the day.

YEAR 7 CAMP: ACE HI RANCH - MARCH 11th -13th
On March 11th, 179 Year 7 students went to Ace Hi Ranch in
Rosebud for 3 days of fun and games. Throughout the camp,
students participated in a variety of activities such as rock climbing,
horse riding, giant swing, flying fox, initiative course, archery,
volleyball and tennis. There was also free time to enjoy sports
including soccer, cricket, football and basketball.
The activities were tremendous and thrilling for some. With the
flying fox and a giant swing, students were flying high. Lots of
friendships were made, starting a new chapter in some students’
school experience. Horse riding was probably the favourite activity
for most students with some even riding a horse for the very first
time. A big thank to all students and teachers that attended the camp
and congratulations to Mr Williams and to the Year 7 Coordinators
Ms Farinacci and Mr Broadbent for all their hard work in running a
successful camp.

VCAL NEWS
The VCAL program is off to a great
start this year already, with all students
attending school on their allocated
days for classes (Monday, Wednesday
and Friday) and their various VET
subjects in the Brimbank VET Cluster.
Some of our students already have
School Based Apprenticeships
underway, which cover their
Structured Work Placement and their
VET course. Congratulations to Paige
Falleti and Marcus Vento of year 11,
who gained School Based
Apprenticeships in Hospitality; Sam
Vasilevski of year 11 is undertaking a
School Based Apprenticeship in
Warehousing; Soakimi Halapio gained
a place in Civil Construction; and
Hayden Sarney has a traineeship in
International Freight Forwarding.
The year 11 VCAL students attended
an excursion on 26th of February at the
Port of Melbourne Education Centre
and had a tour of the port. Students
learned about imports and exports,
employment opportunities, logistics,
freight, economics and trade, as well as
occupational health and safety at ‘the
docks’. Their second excursion is planned
for Thursday 12th March – an Amazing
Race style activity in the Melbourne CBD.
Structured Work Placements are
compulsory for VCAL students and the
first block is for year 12s early in term 2
(20th April – 1st May). VCAL Year 11s
have Work Placement from 9th– 19th June
and a second block from 31st August – 18th
September. Year 12 VCAL students will
then attend 1 day per week of Work
Placement for the remainder of the year,
with the total number of days to be
negotiated between the employer and the
student’s commitments with VET and
school. Students in both year levels should
still attend their VET during work
placement, and ensure that they
communicate this with their workplace
contact person. Queries about VET and
Work Placement should be directed to Ms
Catherine Damon at the College.
Forms/paperwork for Year 12 Work
Placement need to be finalised by the
end of this term.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAM 2015
I would like to formally announce and introduce the Student
Leadership team for 2015. Congratulations to all students who
have been elected and also a big thanks to the other students who
were unsuccessful in their applications this time round. I would
like to encourage those students to re-apply for 2016. The student
leadership team have begun the year firing on all cylinders. They
have begun to meet in their year level groups and start discussion
around their major fundraising project and Community Learning
Projects (CLP's) which will both be taking place throughout the
year.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with all leaders and
checking in to each of their meetings. There has been some
extremely interesting conversation around their fundraising and
community projects and a multitude of ideas developed. Many
ideas have also been raised about ways of improving the school
both inside and outside the classroom.
With the SRC team being introduced for the first time at TLSC in 2015, the student leaders and all students within the College
now have a place to go to forward with their ideas about enhancing their experience at TLSC. I'm sure we will be hearing from
the leaders regularly throughout the year....

Last week the Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental
Studies class went to the Grampians National Park
for 3 days to expand their understandings of
historical relationships with outdoor environments.
On their way they stopped at Ballarat art gallery
along with Stawell historical museum to explore art
and artefacts depicting the perceptions of the
environment, of the first settlers and gold rush
immigrants of Western Victoria. Whilst in the
Grampians the group undertook a tough hike to the
top of the Pinnacle but were rewarded with
spectacular views and a quick dip in Venus baths.
Students were able to explore Brambuk cultural
centre, gaining a greater appreciation of indigenous
hardships and their spiritual connections with the
Grampians, as well as painting and throwing some
boomerangs along the way. I would like to thank Mrs
Drenen and Mr Hearn for all of their assistance on
this camp.

SSV Year 8 Girls Soccer: Keilor District winners!
The Year 8 Girls soccer team got their State title defence under way
last week winning the Keilor District tournament. The girls played
free flowing football scoring plenty of goals, however they will need
to improve their levels of fitness should they wish to defend their
title successfully this year. Stand outs on the day were Olivia Brne,
Chiara Scimone and Jacqueline Adzijovski.
SSV Year 8 Boys Soccer: Keilor District winners!
The Year 8 Boys soccer team had a heart stopping day out at the
Keilor District tournament last week. Having lost their first group
game to Gilson, an early exit looked likely, however they rebounded
well to win their next two group games. The boys came through the
group as winners. The final was a hard fought tussle, but the boys
came out on top winning 2 – 0. Stand outs for the day were Tyson
Scarcella, Servet Kamberi and Kristian Lenart.

FUTSAL On Wednesday the 11th of March, The Senior Boys and Girls
Futsal teams went to Recwest to compete against the other
schools in the Keilor District.
The Girls team was too strong for all of their opposition.
Despite having only one substitute they scored an average of 8
goals per game and only conceded twice in 3 games, leading
them to bring home yet another Futsal trophy. Player of the
tournament goes to Katherine Trajkoska for her tireless running
and her constant scoreboard pressure.
The Boys team had it a little harder, but still managed to defeat
all of their opposition. They won their group stage with ease
and then played Copperfield College in the finals. It was a
tough start to the match but once they started scoring, they
didn’t look back. Constant pressure on the ball from each of the
players meant a 6-1 score line in favour of Taylors Lakes to win
the trophy. The Boys player of the tournament goes to Tyrone
Scully. His work in the defensive line helped keep their goals
conceded to only 2 and he scored plenty of goals with his
brilliant runs from the back.
Well done to everyone who competed on the day.

ITALIAN STUDENT HOMESTAY PROGRAM
TLSC has now organised three Italy trips(2010, 2012 & 2014) which were all very successful experiences for both the staff and
students involved.
This year we have the opportunity to host students from our sister school in Rome called Il Liceo Scientifico “Manfredi
Azzarita” for a week from the 5th to the 11th of September.
We are hoping that this exchange will then be reciprocated in 2016 as we plan our next trip to Italy.
The students from Italy are visiting Australia as a way of getting a deeper understanding of everyday life in Australia.
We need your help as we need to provide accommodation for these students during their stay. Host families will be expected
to :
Provide accommodation for one student for the duration of their stay
Provide the student with three meals per day, laundry facilities etc.
Involve the student in family outgoings and activities on weekends and evenings during their stay
Provide appropriate care and supervision of the student during their stay
The students are fluent in English so whilst it is desirable that a host family is one with a student who studies Italian at TLSC,
the invitation is open to all families to consider being a host family.
We thank you in advance for your support of this program and hope that you will be able to assist us in this venture.
Please complete and return to the school office or to Mrs Deluca in H2 the reply slip below .
Families who have already expressed an interest to participate in this program do not need to register again!
