PRESIDENT’S REPORT WELCOME to all our new U3A members and welcome back to those of you who are returning to enjoy another year of Learning with Pleasure. Last year 1674 people enrolled as members of U3A Redlands District and I can see that 2015 will see this number increase even more. I’d like to thank all our Tutors and Activity coordinators for continuing to share their expertise, skills and time so we can offer such an extensive and interesting list of classes and courses in 2015. There are nearly 100 classes to choose from and this will ensure we continue learning and become more interesting people to know. Our Enrolment Day in January was well attended and considering the very hot weather and the road works just outside the hall, I would like to thank everyone involved for their tolerance and good humour on the day. The lucky door prize generously donated by Andrew Laming, Federal Member for Bowman, was won by Dale Andrew who is one of our computer volunteers. Dale and his wife have already enjoyed their two nights at Mantra Mooloolaba. And, I know you will be pleased to hear that we have been busy viewing alternative and suitably large halls with air conditioning for our January 2016 Enrolment Day. This year we have several new classes in Term 1 and 2. Christine Fletcher and Melanie Smith have been very busy sourcing new classes and venues – do keep an eye on our website home page for up to date news. On the subject of venues, unfortunately, many of our previously “free” rooms are now requiring some contribution to costs and the halls we hire through Council and various Churches have all increased their hire charges in the last few months. One good thing, the U3A Management Committee has not increased the annual membership fee this year and as some of our long standing members know, this has remained constant through the years. Being a member of U3A Redlands is still very affordable. Just recently, 18 of our Pedal for Pleasure cyclists under the leadership of Ken Busfield, have gone on a 7 day “Coastal Escape” Cycling tour from Sydney. Some of the ladies not cycling have gone on their own trip to Canberra with June Busfield – I’m hoping there will be plenty of happy snaps to put up on our website gallery soon. Future trips include a 10 day tour to Borneo – please phone the office to register your possible interest. Also recently we were saddened to hear of the loss of Ted Grant, past President, Camera Club Tutor and a friend to many. Ted hadn’t been well for a few years but he still joined in U3A activities and his memory will be cherished. Thank you Ted for all you did for our U3A – we will miss you and keep your family in our thoughts. On the social scene, the Committee is having an informal AUTUMN SOIRÉE on Friday evening 1st May 5pm to 7pm at the Lions Hut in Shore Street North, Cleveland. Tickets are available from the U3A Office and from Life in Australia and are $10 to include wine/beer/orange juice and finger food. Tea and coffee also provided. Come along for some conversation and a short

interlude of musical entertainment provided by hidden talent in U3A! It will be a convivial evening. Lastly, a reminder not to miss attending the U3A Asia Pacific International Conference on 28th and 29th May being held in the Brisbane City Hall and hosted by U3A Network Qld. We have speakers from around the world and this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to mingle and meet like minded people from U3A World. Please see the website www.u3aqldconference.org for more details and register as a delegate. U3A Redlands is offering free transport to and from the conference on both days from a central Cleveland point. Don’t delay on this one – it’s close to home and will be exceptionally GOOD. THE INTELLECTS

Two retired professors were vacationing with their wives at a hotel in the

Tablelands. They were sitting on the veranda one summer evening watching the

sun set. The history professor asked the psychology professor, “Have you read

Marx?” To which the professor of psychology replied, “Yes and I think it’s these

pesky wicker chairs”---------------

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once.

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

We must put a stop to this immediately! Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper, groceries heavier and everything

is getting further away. Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded

to discover how long my street has become!

And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They

speak in whispers all the time.

I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand,

people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other

day and she had aged so much that she didn’t even recognise me. I got to thinking

about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I

glanced at my own reflection......well, REALLY NOW – even mirrors are not made

the way they used to be!

Clothing manufacturers are less civilised these days. They have started to label

size 10 or 12 dresses as size 18 or 20. Do they think we do not notice?

I’d like to call up someone in authority to report what is going on, but the

telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they’ve printed the phone book in

such small type that no one could ever find a number

ARE WE UNDER ATTACK!

If undelivered return to U3A Redlands DistrictO

A ‘once only’ fee of $2 per person is required to cover photocopying. Other requirements are bike, water bottle, money for train and coffee etc. en

route. and membership of U3A Redlands.
