In Memoriam

On behalf of the Club Membership, we wish to express our most sincere sympathy to: The family and friends of Sylvia Scott. Sylvia passed away recently at the age of 98. Sylvia and her late husband Irwin were avid collectors and active members of the Wild Rose Antique Collectors Club in Edmonton. They always had a booth at the Spring Show where they sold many quality pieces in their collection, until health issues finally forced them to retire from this enjoyable hobby in 2009. Published in the Edmonton Journal February 14, 2015 Sylvia introduced our current president, Bruce Gilbertson, to WRAC. The 2007 Membership Directory lists Sylvia and Irwin as collecting Art Glass (Depression, Carnival etc.) and fine porcelain (Belleck, Limoge etc.). ______________________________________________________________________________

Show & Tell: Best "Finds" of 2014 At the February 23 Meeting

I bought this poster off eBay from a circus collector in the US. He had it listed to only US customers and I couldn't even contact him from his eBay listing but I figured out how I could reach him and persuaded him to ship to Canada. The top half of the poster is a stock Clyde Beatty circus poster with a springing tiger. They would use these posters everywhere and would glue on the bottom half which included the location and date. This poster is large, measuring 46 x 37 inches. To find one from Edmonton has to be quite rare and to find one from a show that I actually attended was an extra thrill. Clyde Beatty was a world famous animal trainer. He also starred in movies under his own name and had a radio adventure program. In addition he was the owner and star of a traveling circus. This poster is from a circus appearance in Edmonton in 1948. I know my parents took me to a Clyde Beatty circus when I was very young. This may have been the year or it may have been the next year it came to town. The show was in a large tent outdoors. The only thing I really remember about the circus was sitting on wooden bleachers with Clyde Beatty in a large cage with lions and tigers. The animals didn't scare me but every time he shot off his pistol I would start to tremble uncontrollably. Likely around the same time, I remember my parents taking me to a farm a couple of miles North West of our farm in Horse Hills to see lions and tigers in orange circus wagons. I don't know if these were the animals from the same circus or why they were there, but John Duke who grew up very close to there also remembers them being there. Because the size is larger than a standard mounting board I am going to have to find a special acid free mount board so that I can frame it. Then I have to figure out where I can display a poster that large. Bill

I have two finds. The Mickey Mouse toaster was found at a Lutheran church sale on Church Street (95 St) and about 106 Ave. When the toasting is finished it leaves an image of a Mickey Mouse hat and ears on the toast. When it pops up it plays the music from “M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E”. Clinton says the toaster came out for the 50th anniversary of Mickey Mouse. The “Tie Slide” with a mini Tri-Cone drilling bit on the end of the chain was found at The City of Edmonton Re-Use Center at the bottom of a box. It is marked “Germany” and is believed to be pre WW2 and is stamped 92.5 silver. It was very dull and dirty at first, but I noticed the stamps and mom polished it up so it looked very nice. Side note is that Mr. Howard Hughes made a lot of money off the design of the roller-cone drilling bit for the oilfield industry. His original design was based on using two cones but was soon changed to use three cones or Tri-Cone. To date, this is still one of the most common drill bits used in the drilling industries. James

I found the Ernie Banks Bobble-head at the Old Strathcona Antique Mall. He was the first African American to play for the Chicago Cubs. He was one of the all-time most popular Cubs and won 2 MVP awards. The 25th Anniversary of Star Trek magazine

I picked up at the Red Deer Christmas Show. The comic was #1 for the series The Honeymooners; found it at One Man's Treasures. Bernie

This Carriage Clock was built in 1850 London England and has an 8 day movement. The case is French Brass and Glass. It has the original key and box. The box has a sliding panel so you could check the time (while traveling) without taking the clock out of the case. It's a beautiful piece of history and it "walked into my shop"! Clinton

I was making a hurried return to my house to pick up a left-behind cell phone when I spotted this statue beside a garbage can in a back alley. The price was right and I picked it up. I'm not sure what the metal is, but it is really heavy! I've done some research and have found the same style of Deco nude in some lamps, but I don't think it was ever a lamp. I think it might have been designed as a plant stand and that's what I am using it for. Bruce

My father gave me this plane for Christmas in 1963; let me play with it for a few hours and then put it away. I didn't get it back for 20 years, which is probably a good thing! There are 3 switches in the cockpit, one starts the engines on the right and one controls the engines on the left. The third switch controls the

stewardess who goes up and down the aisle. I have been really frustrated in trying to research it. Tonight, Clinton Beck was able to tell me more about it than I've ever known. It was a promotional piece made by a Japanese company. This is the first time I've attended a Wild Rose Antique Collectors meeting (recently did some work for Bruce and he suggested I come) and I'm going to talk to my wife and we will probably join the club. John Tuck I spotted this vase in the Old Strathcona Mall months ago, but

decided it was too pricey. However, two weeks ago I noticed the price had been reduced and I bought it. It's a Clarice Cliff! Kim I didn't get my Dig & Pick, so didn't know tonight was Show & Tell! However, on the way into town we stopped at my "trap lines" (thrift shops) and I found this glass vase at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop in Sherwood Park. I liked the look of it. It says Mark S…something '87 on the bottom. The red horse is a Dala horse, made in Sweden. Each one is hand-carved and hand-painted. I have had them in blue, green, and yellow, but red is the most common color. Susanne

You all know I love pop-up books, but I was really thrilled to get this one: How to Find Flower Fairies. It is so intricate that there is even a butterfly that pops up on a flower and a camera that pops up on back page. Bessie

I was happy to obtain this German edition of the map of Henry Ellis's voyage in search of the Northwest Passage printed in Hamburg 1794. It is a map book. Also have a photo of the English version of the same map printed for H. Whitridge, 1748. John

This magazine features World Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston on the cover. It's from January 1963, price two shillings and is a British magazine called World Sports, I happened to find it at Rocky Mountain Antique Mall hiding in a sports magazine pile. I never knew it existed and was so pleased to add it to my collection. When Sonny was in England for a publicity tour the British press really made a fuss over him. However when Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay) came over to fight Henry Cooper in England later in 1963 Britain soon lost interest in Sonny to cheer on Ali. Ali would later win the title from Sonny in Feb. 1964. The next magazine has Britain's Randy Turpin, Middle-weight Champion of the World counted out in a brutal re-match with "Sugar" Ray Robinson on this September 1951 British magazine called Everybody's which I found at the Rocky Mountain Antique Mall. This was another great find. There were all kinds of great pictures of the fight inside the magazine. Turpin had surprised Robinson earlier in the year by taking the title from the champion and was winning this return bout until Robinson rallied and kayo's Turpin in the 10th round, in front of some 70,000 fight fans in New York's Yankee Stadium. Robinson would go on to hold the title off and on over the next 10 years. Robinson is often considered the greatest boxer of all time, regardless of weight class. Future World Champions Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard would look up to Robinson as their idol. The Joe Frazier picture is from about 1968-69. I obtained this picture from a fellow boxing collector and it is actually autographed by Joe. However the autograph was done in ink and has faded over the last 40 or so years. The picture was probably exposed to the light, causing it to fade. I myself have had this happen to me. I had autograph pictures of World Heavyweight Champions Floyd Patterson and Sonny

Liston go the same way. I got them back in the 1960's and I didn't know anything about autographs done in ink and being exposed to the light. WORDS OF ADVICE: If you happen to have any autograph pictures in ink, make sure you look after them. Most autographed pictures today are done in sharpie pens, so who knows how they will react over the next 30-40 years. Fans who obtain autographs today on hockey sweaters should really look after them, as they tend to fade and often run. Please try to preserve your treasures. Check on the internet for word of advice. It was a year of Dolls in 2014, with the Barbie Club 25th party, two doll auctions, two doll shows.... Here are two dolls, one is a new porcelain doll (middle doll) - got at the Porcelain Beauties Doll Auction and the other is an original older 'bisque' head doll (lying down) which I got at Ward's Doll Auction. She is a German doll "generic" from the teens with a replacement wig. I don't know why we say porcelain for modern and bisque for antiques as they are the same material. I used to make porcelain dolls and it really helped me to understand the process and learn about materials used to make dolls. Now, I study both old and new dolls; and am learning to distinguish the work on old dolls - repairs, replaced parts and bodies, glass eyes, mohair or synthetic wigs. It is okay to have older dolls with repairs as long you recognize them and you pay accordingly. The resale value of this new reproduction of a 'Smiling Bru' doll (on the right) is

dependent on desirability and the cost of the materials. She has a quality mohair wig, glass eyes,

excellent painting, finishing and quality materials and sewing in her costume; with a new composition body [the original doll would have had a leather body] so this distracts from her retail value. I estimate there is at least $300.00 worth of product here! I also got her at the Porcelain Beauties doll auction. Below is a description of an original antique doll and the price is why I don't own one! "Antique Bru Smiler French Fashion Doll" original antique doll on a website is priced at $5995.00 and gives this detailed description: "... a 21" French fashion doll in all original condition. Her bisque head is free from any hairlines, damage or restoration. She has nice pale bisque with beautiful blue glass enamel inset eyes that have spiral threading and darker blue outer rims. Her delicate mouth is upturned in a pleasant smile. She was made in the 1870's by Leon Casmir Bru - this model first appeared in 1872. She has some kiln dust in her bisque. She is marked I on the head and shoulders. She is on her original kid leather body, with square collaret and has stitched and separated fingers. The body is very firm in clean but has a few repairs. There is no sawdust leaking. She has wonderful antique undergarments. The two piece silk dress is amazing on this doll - excellent condition - pale yellow silk with black lace and ruby beaded trim. Her darling hat matches as well as her antique leather shoes with heels. She has her original blonde mohair wig in an elaborate braided design." Vicki

I found this cigar lighter, known as the "Flame Lady" by lighter collectors, at the Old Strathcona Antique Mall Car-boot sale for $15. This one was made by Parker; Dunhill also made a Flame Lady. A wick is ignited through the heat of a battery powered element. Fortunately, the batteries had not been left in it to corrode. Its Deco design is appealing. They sell on eBay for around $58, so should make a little money! Marjorie

Our very first show was held Sunday, March 28, 1976 at the West End Bingo Centre. The show ran from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM under the able guidance of Jim Close, our first Show Chairman. We had a total of 62 sales tables booked. As with every show, it was the Club volunteers who made things run smoothly …..ticket takers, club table people, display people, etc. Besides the sales tables we also started the tradition of having displays at our Shows. …….We rented display cases from the Rock & Gem club. As the club originally started out as a bottle collectors' club, many of the displays featured the bottle theme. A lot of the items related to early Alberta history including Alberta Drugstore, milk, pop, and brewery items, plus insulators, fruit jars, Depression glass, and early Chinese containers from the Railway building days. We also had spinning and weaving demonstrations by Trudy Lovegrove of Sherwood Park.

Although we were unable to persuade any vendors from out-of-province to join us, we did have a strong contingent of Calgary vendors. We also had a local lawyer, Randall Wallace, who displayed two tables full

of ancient Roman and Islamic glass and other artifacts that were consigned to an auction in Calgary the following month. By the time the doors opened we had a long line up all the way down the block outside the Bingo Centre. We had discussed at length what our admission charge would be and had arrived at 50 cents, twice the amount the flea markets were charging at the time. Our fear was that no one would show at such a high price, but our fears were unfounded. In all we had 1300 paid admissions and they were still coming at 4:00 when we had to shut down and pack up because the room was scheduled for bingo that evening.

The show was a rousing success for both the vendors and the buyers and nearly everybody was happy - everyone that is, except the bingo patrons who arrived an hour early. Boy, did we learn how picky and superstitious some of the bingo players could be. The same table and chairs weren't in the exact location they had always been, which meant the "lucky" chairs were no longer at their corresponding "lucky" tables. We had some very upset and disgruntled bingo players, but everyone else seemed to have left the building happy.
