Monthly Meetings

East Umatilla County Health District

Medic 400

PO Box 640 Athena, OR 97813

At the February 19, 2016 meeting of the Board of Directors, Jeremy Lasater was sworn in as a Direc-

tor for Position #3. The District is in the early stages of planning the 2016-17 Budget and has sched-uled a work session for March 19 at the District office from 11-3:00 p.m. to develop a strategy for the

second phase of our re-districting plan.

Phase I was the passage of the option levy which is helping us bridge the income gap until we are ready to implement Phase II. Phase II will involve dissolving the current District if the voters ap-

prove the formation of a new Health District which will expand our tax boundaries to include our en-

tire Ambulance Service Area (ASA). Our current tax boundaries are the same as the Athena-Weston School District but we have to serve an area that includes Helix and Adams and extends almost to the

Columbia River (Juniper Canyon/Wallula Rd.) The Helix and Adams areas do not pay taxes to help support our District.

We want to keep our 24/7 ALS (Advanced Life Support) service. To staff a 24/7 service, it will take

three full time Paramedics plus our volunteer EMTs and drivers. Our current tax rate of $.14 a thou-sand was voted in as our permanent tax rate in 1988. We need to raise our "per thousand" rate to

keep the service going and we can only do that by dissolving the current District and forming a new

one at a higher tax rate. Please share with us your ideas for continued service.

You can send your questions and suggestions to the: East Umatilla County Health District, P.O. Box

640, Athena, Or. 97813.

Leadership Training In Paraguay

By Jennifer Spurgeon

As part of my leadership training, I spent the first week in February in Asuncion, Paraguay in South

America working with about 250 other coaches with The John Maxwell Tear training the citizens of Para-guay in the "Maxwell Roundtable Method". This is the overview

from the Press Release dated February 2, 2016:

" Over the course of five rigorous days, the specially trained del-egation has met with top government, military, education, busi-

ness, faith and communi-

ty leaders with one goal in mind: hand over prov-

en tools to the leaders of

Paraguay in a structured process for their further leadership development through the

power of the values-based Maxwell Round Table Method.

Maxwell has been invited to deliver the Maxwell Roundtable

Method by the leaders of 22 nations. He and a special delegation delivered the method in Gua-

temala - visits to more countries are in the works.

After discussing specific leadership values and how to personally im-prove upon each, table partic-

ipants are asked to proactively

practice the growth method for one week, then reach out

to five members of their com-

munity and teach them the same process. This process is

expected to create a cultural paradigm

shift from the top down - and

Roundtable to Roundtable, participant to participant.

One-third of the Paraguayan population lives beneath the poverty line. By equipping leaders through the Max-

well Roundtable Method with values-based content for them to teach to others, a revolution of transformational

leadership can fast -track a country and help it move for-

ward with confi- dence.”

This incredible opportunity allowed me to meet with high level government officials, high school and university students, private sector employees and employers, and many other people from all walks of

life in Paraguay. I participated in cultural exchange, personal growth, and community outreach and can

easily say I was just as impacted by the experience as those whom I trained.

I would love to share about this experience with anyone!

The Weston Food Pantry is open each month on the Saturday after the 3rd Friday. They have wonderful food supplies for folks in need. BUT, paper products are not part of what they provide. So, the Weston-McEwen Lions Club gathers paper towels and toilet paper to be part of the offerings. You can help!! There are boxes for your pa-per donations in the US Bank in Athena and in the Weston City Hall. We appreciate your help.

New District Superintendent Hired

The Athena-Weston School Board has hired Laure Quaresma as its new superintendent for the district. Quar-esma will start her position on July 1, 2016. After opportunities for the community to meet the two final superintendent candidates in February and addi-tional interviews, the board signed a contract with Quar-esma on February 26. “I think Laure will make an outstanding contribution to the district. Her experience as a teacher, a building admin-istrator and an assistant superintendent will all serve as assets in her new position in our district,” said Jim Reger, interim superintendent for Athena-Weston School District. Quaresma is the current assistant superintendent at Walla Walla Public Schools in Walla Walla, Washington, a job she has held since 2010. Previously, she worked as an elementary principal, middle school assistant principal, university adjunct professor and teacher in Washington and Oregon. Quaresma said she is looking forward to working in a smaller school district and getting to know the stu-dents and families in the communities of Athena and Wes-ton. “It’s a strong school district that really supports its students. I am eager to continue the concepts of teaching and learning through individualized instruction and dis-covering what motivates kids on their paths to college and career,” said Quaresma.
