ASHM NEWSA VHHITAL part of better care Primary care is set to take centre stage in thetreatment and prevention of blood borne viruses, withthe official launch of the Victorian HIV and ViralHepatitis Integrated Training and Learning (VHHITAL)program launched on 9 February 2016.Representatives from all the VHHITAL consortiumpartners were on hand to support the launch andshare their views on how the program will supportGPs and other primary health professionals deliverbetter and more accessible care.  Read more

ASHM prepares for training Far North Queensland ASHM staff will be travelling to Cairns, ThursdayIsland and Bamaga from the 13­17 March 2017 to run6 courses on HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and STIs fora wide audience. The Far North Queensland regionwas identified in the recent 2015 Third NationalHepatitis B Mapping Report as the highestprevalence area for hepatitis B in Queensland, withan estimated prevalence of 2.52%, more than onepercent higher than any other area in the state. Only4.3% of patients within the PHN receive treatment ormonitoring, and 1.6% are currently on treatment. This is well below the current National Hepatitis BStrategy target of 15% receiving treatment by 2017,and the Queensland Hepatitis B Action Plan 2016­2021 aim of all people living with chronic hepatitis Breceiving appropriate monitoring or treatment by2021. Read more

Study shows vulnerable populations in the Pacific Vulnerable populations in the Pacific are currently notreceiving adequate HIV services. This was a keyfinding of a study conducted by UNSW and ASHM in2016 in nine Pacific Island countries in Kiribati,

Tuvalu, Vanuatu, The Kingdom of Tonga, Samoa,Cook Islands, Palau, Federated States of Micronesiaand The Republic of Marshall Islands. The study, titled Pacific Multi­Country Mapping andBehavioural Study: HIV and STI Risk Vulnerabilityamong Key Populations, through surveys and in­depth interviews assessed and examined thebehaviour risk factors and social and structuraldeterminants of HIV risk that drive the epidemicamong vulnerable groups, such as men who havesex with men (MSM), transgender people, female sexworkers and seafarers. Access the Report

SECTOR NEWSHIV prevention study to commence April 2017 South Australians at a high risk of acquiring HIV willhave the opportunity to benefit from the latest HIVprevention medication through a new partnership.Following the announcement of the Pre­ExposureProphylaxis (PrEP) access trial late last year,Victoria’s Alfred Health has been chosen to partnerwith the South Australian Health and MedicalResearch Institute (SAHMRI), SA Health and localclinics for the study to begin in April. The study will examine the impact of expanding theuse of PrEP across South Australia.  Read more

The Kirby Institute presented with key to the city  17 February 2017:  The Lord Mayor of Sydney hastoday presented the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydneywith the key to the city, recognising 30 years ofoutstanding work with communities to address theHIV epidemic. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the highest honour thecity can confer should be reserved for those who havemade a truly outstanding contribution. "The KirbyInstitute amply fulfils those criteria. Established in1986, when there was a desperate need tounderstand the causes and nature of the HIVpandemic, the Kirby Institute became a crucial part ofthis great international effort."  Read more

Latest research shows Australia on track to curehepatitis C 21 February 2017:  An increasing proportion ofAustralians are having their hepatitis C treated inGeneral Practice, from 4% in March to 19% inSeptember 2016, according to a new report releasedtoday by the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney. The Kirby Institute report Monitoring Hepatitis CTreatment Uptake in Australia provides information onthe first year of the direct­acting antiviral (DAA)hepatitis C treatment program in Australia. The reportindicates that more than 30,000 Australians weretreated for their hepatitis C virus infection in 2016 – amassive increase on the 2,000­3,000 people withhepatitis C treated annually prior to the listing.Download the latest newsletter

New HIV prevention campaign redefines 'safesex'  13 February 2017:  A new campaign targeting gaymen is seeking to raise awareness about newapproaches to HIV prevention that don't alwaysinvolve condoms. Launched by ACON, How Do YouDo It? aims to educate gay and same­sex attractedmen about new biomedical options such as PrEP(pre­exposure prohylaxis) and UVL (undetectable viralload) that now sit alongside condoms as effectivemethods of preventing HIV transmission. Read more

 The Third National Hepatitis B Mapping ProjectReport is now available to download or as a hardcopy.Covering data from 2014 and 2015, the reportprovides updated estimates on the prevalence,diagnosis, immunisation coverage, monitoring andtreatment of hepatitis B at the Primary Health Network(PHN), State and Territory level. A further supplementary report presents estimates ofthe prevalence of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) brokendown to Statistical Area 3 (SA3) level (generallypopulations of between 30,000 and 130,000residents).  Download the Report

HIV Management in Australasia: a guide forclinical care This is a key text used in ASHM’s accreditationcourse for HIV s100 prescribers and in the continuingmedication education scheme for community medicalpractitioners to maintain HIV s100 prescriber rights.Our invaluable clinical monograph is an essentialteaching tool in training programs for participants andeducators and is now available as a website. A new section HIV Management for nurses andmidwives has been added for HIV, sexual health andpublic health nurses from around Australia whopresent a nursing perspective on caring for peoplewith HIV in the Australian context. ASHM would like tothank editors Martyn French and Liz Crock and allcontributors and reviewers for their work on bringingthis to reality.  Visit the website
