FAIRMONT’S HERITAGE DAYS “IN HONOR OF US”

by Charles Kemp

If you’re old enough I’ll bet you can remember catching lightning bugs on a summer night in

Mason Jars, munching on crisp fried chicken at Grandma’s house, watching ladies of the church

sew quilts, steer the tractor while sitting in your Daddy’s lap, helping crank the churn for

homemade ice cream, sampling the newly cooked hog, tasting you first pork skin, enjoying a

traditional southern family supper, or dozens of other rural cultural customs. And while they may

live on in our memories we should still be able to capture them again. Let’s put them in the

spotlight and make these icons come alive once again. Well, that’s the goal of Heritage Days and

after two successful years the event seems to have caught on among those interested in reliving

their earlier rural lifestyles. In a twofold effort to both promote the earlier rural lifestyle of our

area and the Border Belt Museum here in town Heritage Days was unfolded in 2015. Museum

co-curator Charles Kemp formed a committee which unveiled a two-day spring event set in

April. The opening session was a Friday evening with a country meal and entertainment followed

with a second day of food, crafts, vintage farm equipment and cars, dessert contests, home

cooked barbeque, and country musical entertainment on the grounds of the museum. This theme,

which has proven successful in the past two years, is being followed again this year.

On Friday April 21st a delicious country meal of friend chicken and country vegetables will be

served to ticket holders along with an hour of great entertainment featuring the harmonious

sounds of The Lumber River Quartet, the high stepping rhythms of Amy’s Academy of Dance

cloggers, and the songbirds of Long Branch School. Special rural themed table décor along with

aluminum pie plates and mason jars for the meal and beverage will highlight the theme for the

event. Emcee for the evening will be Kat Littleturtle, director of the I-95 welcome center in

Rowland.

The second day moves to the museum grounds for an array of country craft and food

offerings, an Amish quilt raffle, home cooked barbeque sandwiches, farm equipment and car

displays, bottle cokes and salted peanuts, a strawberry dessert contest, tours of the museum, and

pony rides along with a petting zoo for children. Throughout the afternoon there will be live mu-

sical entertainment from the outdoor stage provided by the Carolina Girls line dancers, the South-

ern Sapphires cloggers, country music vocals offered by Sarah Blanton and Sarah Davis, blues

and soul selections by acoustic guitarist Jim Pate, gospel singing, and a local blue grass band.

The Heritage Days committee includes Lib Haywood, Brian and Donna Jacobs, Gina Leggett,

Lucille Christian, Jim Caulder, Phillip Hunt, Stan Callahan, Vallie Leggett, Michelle Rich, Pam

Kemp, Samantha Gromme, Rod and Teresa Heasley, Mendy Lee, Jennifer Hunt, and Charles

Kemp. Advance tickets for the April 21st dinner/entertainment event are currently on sale from

any of the committee above or in the following outlets. There will not be any at the door sales.

Lumber River Country Market, Clothing & Such (both locations), Fairmont Dept. Store, Fred’s

Pharmacy, Angie’s Salon, Sister’s Boutique in Lumberton, Floyd’s Auto Parts, Callahan &

Company Salon, Divine Treasures (next to Food Lion), or at the museum.

Even if we can’t travel back in time to those wonderful days of our youth when front porch

rocking chairs seemed like a throne and homemade ice cream made us smile. When the freedom

existed to take long Sunday afternoon family drives and stop for delicious home cooked

barbeque sandwiches at a favorite roadside drive-in. When a summer day ended with fire flies

and the symphony of a cricket serenade. And when we could gaze proudly over a field of golden

leaf being lovingly kissed by the rising sun. Even if those days are gone we can relive our

heritage and do it in style. Come and be a part of our past, our culture, our heritage at Fairmont’s

3rd annual Heritage Days on April 21st & 22nd. We’d love to have ya.

Fairmont 602 N. Walnut St. 910-628-0600

We look forward to seeing you.

By: Charles KempCo-Curator- Border Belt museumFairmont, nC

You might just be old enough to remember the following: not having to lock up everything at your house when you left, making ice cream the old fashioned way, checking the tobacco barns, actually talking to a real person rather than a machine, party lines, or the family all eating together at meals. Many of those things are gone now in modern America but some of them are need to be treasured, at least for a few days. The Border Belt Farmers Museum & Welcome Center in Fairmont is very concerned with our rural way of life and in an attempt to focus on the charm of the by gone days of that life style it will be presenting Fairmont’s 3rd annual Heritage Days on April 21st & 22nd.

The event starts in the downtown Heritage Center on Friday the 21st at 7:00 p.m. with a country supper and musical entertainment. Featured performers will be The Fabulous Lumber River Quartet, the high stepping cloggers from Amy’s Dance Academy in Chadbourn, and the talented chorus of Long Branch Elementary School under the director of Janet Meier. These 3rd and 4th graders, called The Songbirds, will be dressed in farming attire. Guests will enjoy fried chicken, rice and gravy, corn, lima beans, banana pudding, rolls, and ice tea or lemonade served in aluminum pie plates and mason jars. Junior Beta Club members from FMS and members of the Junior Civitan Club of Fairmont will serve the meal in farm attire. Our Mistress of Ceremonies, Kat Littleturtle, Director of the I-95 Welcome Center in Rowland, known for her local folk life and country story telling prowess, will keep the mood happy and

fun filled throughout the evening. Tickets for this down home evening of entertainment will be $15 for a single or $25 for a couple, will be on sale starting March 29th, and can be purchased from any of the committee members listed below in this article or at Fred’s Pharmacy, Fairmont Dept. Store, Angie’s Salon, Callahan & Company Salon, Clothing and Such, Sister’s Boutique in Lumberton, Floyd Auto Parts, Lumber River Country Market, or the museum in downtown Fairmont.

The fun continues on Saturday the 22nd from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on the museum grounds in historic downtown Fairmont with antique farm equipment and older car displays, craft vendors displaying and selling country culture products. There’ll be plenty of country food on hand including the ever popular country classics collard sandwich and wraps, fried turkey legs, pork skins, and homemade ice cream. Home cooked barbeque will be sold either by sandwiches or the pound and a best strawberry shortcake contest is also planned with a $50 cash prize. A wide array of handmade wood products, cloth, and quilting crafts will also be available. An authentic Amish handmade quilt will be raffled off. There will be a farm animal petting display along with pony rides for children to enjoy from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m.

as well as country and rural games for all to participate in. Accompanying all this outdoor fun will be an afternoon of gospel and blue grass musical entertainment along with the snappy cloggers of The Southern Sapphires from Fairmont and great dance moves from the Carolina Girls line dancers.

Fairmont’s Heritage Days has been designed by a committee consisting of Mendy Lee, Eustice Callahan Jr, Pam Kemp, Samantha Gromme, Lucille Christian, Lib Haywood, Rod Hester, Jimmy Caulder, Gina Leggett, Jennifer Hunt, Brian and Donna Jacobs, Phillip Hunt, Michelle Rich, Stanley Callahan, Rod and Teresa Heasley, Vallie Leggett, and Charles Kemp who seek to preserve our wonderful country lifestyle and folk life. They have been hard at work since the start of the new year putting the event together, contacting vendors, and making arrangements.

For those who remember all too well those glory days where life was simpler and not quite as rushed. Where front porches were treasured, and families spent quality time together. Where work came first and play followed, and where a person was proud of their heritage and country roots then Fairmont’s Heritage Days is right up your alley. Come join us for this marvelous event in April. We’ll make you feel right down home.
