March 2017 Issue

Dear Friends,

March 1 of this year is Ash Wednesday, a day to reflect upon our

mortality and “the sin that so easily entangles us” (Hebrews 12:1). It al-

so marks for us the beginning of Lent, the six week season of prepara-

tion for Easter. I am excited and looking forward to this year’s Lenten

journey as we move through it, together, as a congregation. I invite you

to join with me this Lent in considering the question, “What will I do when

meeting the resurrected Christ this Easter?”

During Lent, Sunday morning worship will focus on themes of

how others responded when they met Jesus: the crowds, Andrew, Mary

Magdalene, Bartimaeus, Zacchaeus, Mary and Martha. In the scripture

passages, Jesus amazingly meets each person right where they need

him the most. The way he intersects with their lives and their responses

to meeting him can inform us in our preparations for his death and resur-

rection celebrations this year. Where might you be when Jesus inter-

sects with your life?

You will also have a unique opportunity to meet Jesus at the

Community Lenten worship services each Sunday evening at 6pm.

Each service will contain dramatic presentations, including the role of

Jesus, those whom he healed or who witnessed his teaching and mira-

cles. You won’t want to miss these services!

From the Pastor’s Desk continued

Both clergy and laity will be involved in bringing these Biblical moments

to life. (Did I hear Mark Crawmer would be in one?) We will be hosting

the service on March 12th. The schedule for the other services appears

elsewhere in this newsletter.

Finally, as we meet Jesus, we come to realize that Jesus chose

to die so that we might live. This is expressed movingly through the

words of author Max Lucado in his book, He Chose the Nails: What God

did to win your heart. Many of our congregation enjoyed Max’s book,

Because of Bethlehem, during Advent. No doubt, He Chose the Nails

will be just as heartwarming. Books are available at the church if you

would like to read it. Each Wednesday in Lent, we will study this materi-

al together at 7pm in the Chapel. Joining together in this study will ena-

ble our faith to be deepened throughout Lent by considering Christ’s

sacrifice for us.

I know that March and April are busy for many of us. We want to

get outside and enjoy spring. There are extra events for special occa-

sions like graduations and weddings. Little League and baseball sea-

sons start. Remember in the midst of the scheduling to make time for

your soul. When we are in a good place with God and tending our soul

through study, prayer, worship, and service, everything else in our lives

becomes richer; life’s joys take on greater depth and meaning, and we

find we have more courage to face life’s trials. Of course, that is largely

because of a deeper awareness that God through Jesus Christ knows

our journey, and is guiding and walking along with us.

Don’t miss the blessings God has for you! Take advantage of the

opportunities God extends to enrich your life this Lent. Sunday morn-

ings, Sunday evenings, Wednesday evenings, reading, praying and

serving: How will you connect with God this Lent to be ready to meet our

risen Lord on Easter?

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Joy

Max Lucado

Wednesdays at 7pm, Faith

UMC Chapel

Sessions include:

He Chose to Be One of Us

He Chose to Forgive Us

He Chose to Invite Us into His Presence

He Chose to Love Us Forever

He Chose to Give Us Victory

“Every gift from God reveals his love, but no gift reveals his love more than the gifts of the cross. These gifts came not wrapped in paper but in passion. They were not placed around a tree but around a cross. They were not covered with ribbons but sprinkled with the blood that Christ shed on our behalf. As we un-wrap these gifts, we need to pause and listen for his voice. As we do, perhaps we will hear him whisper, “I did it just for you.”” (From back cover of Study Guide.)
