The total cost was £930 and the work was carried out by John Thompson and Son Ltd, Peterborough. At the same time the bells were removed and renovated at a cost of approximately £250. This included replacing the timber frame supporting the bells with a metal frame and a proposal to enlarge the frame to take a sixth bell. This term in Class 1 we have learned about ‘Space’. We found out about the different planets and the space race as well as a lot more. We also had a go at designing, making and launching our own rock-

ets using a rocket pump! It was so exciting, we found the ones that were light and streamline went the highest and the furthest. The children at Swinderby All Saints have been very busy this month. The Y5 and Y6 children have taken part in a Dance Festival at The Terry O’Toole theatre where they performed alongside other primary schools. Some children also took part in Robert Pattinson School’s production of ‘Beauty and the beast.’ Both times the children were complimented on their performances. Class 4 were also lucky enough to visit the National Civil War Centre in Newark as part of their study on local History. There they had great fun re enacting the battle for Newark, taking part in a siege and trying costumes on from the period. They had a thoroughly super time.

DEFIBRILLATOR ACCESS

The main defibrillator is situated near the door of the Village Hall. Swinderby School have just taken delivery of a defibrillator in school following staff first aid training. So this is also accessible. No one wants to be in the stressful scenario of having to use the defibrillator but understanding how to access in advance, ’just in case’ will be beneficial.

If you come across someone who isn’t breathing or is breathing erratically dial 999 immediately and start CPR. Every minute without CPR reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10%. Don’t interrupt CPR to fetch the defibrillator. If possible send someone else. When you call 999 they will tell you the code to release the defibrillator. To position the defibrillator all you have to do is follow the spoken instructions and the diagrams. The defibrillator detects the heart’s rhythm, it won’t deliver a shock unless needed. You will need to press a bottom on most defibrillators to deliver the shock although some are automatic.

You will need to resume CPR as soon as instructed by the defibrillator’.

SCRABBLE The Scrabblers meet every other Tuesday in the Plough at 7pm. We feel very welcome, a lovely log fire, ’bit of banter’ We usually play 2 games, ’nothing serious’ put the world to rights, home for around 9.30pm. There are friendly volunteers who will drive you to the above places for a small fee. You do not have to be elderly to use this service! FELLOWSHIP LUNCH This takes place on the first Thursday of each month in the Vil-lage Hall. All ages are welcome and for £3.50 you will receive a hot meal, with sweet and cheese. You can just turn up, but it would help the organisers if you could let them know that you plan to attend. The people to contact are Gina Webb on or Audrey Innes on 8. They are keen to welcome more people to the lunches.

GOOD COMPANIONS Swinderby Good Companions Club promotes social interaction and friendship for the senior citizens of the village. Regular monthly meetings are held in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm on the second Thursday of every month. Games are played and afternoon tea is served by volunteer hostesses. Outings are organised during the year along with an annual fund raising garden party.

BOWLS CLUB The bowls club meet during the summer months at the bowling green (behind the village hall.) I have been informed that sadly member numbers are down this year and as such the club is beginning to struggle. It would be a shame if we lost this club in the village. They are on the look out for new members to go along for fun and friend-ship. Have you been thinking of joining for a while, would you like to see what it is all about and have a try? No experience necessary. No one too old or too young!! Everyone welcome.

THE PLOUGH GOLF SOCIETY Open to all and anyone can join. Playing on the last Fri-day of the month. Contact Adam BOOK CLUB The book club meets every six weeks or so. Members read and discuss the books. It’s very informal and a great way of coming across new authors. However, as we meet in each other’s houses, there is a limit on numbers. CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup. Call David Gardiner

Church Annual Parochial Meeting This is to be held on Tues 20 March at 10.15am. Only people registered on the Church Electoral Role may participate in this meeting. Should anyone wish to be added to that register please contact either me or Audrey Innes (Church Warden) on 8 or by email on . However, any parishioner who wishes to may attend as an observer. Prior to this meeting at 10.00am there will be a meeting to elect Church Wardens - any parishioners may participate in this process. This is an annual meeting and although Audrey Innes will be standing for re-election both our other wardens will not be doing so. Michelle Boddy, as you may know, has moved out of the area and Derek Broughton now has transport difficulties and can no longer commit to the role. Anyone interested in becoming a Church Warden should please contact Andrew Vaughan. The Coffee Stop continues to thrive. Drop in for a coffee and a chat any Monday 10.30am to noon. The Churchyard is looking beautiful. The Spring flowers are lovely. Also remember that we have a working party that meets at 10am on the last Saturday in every month from March till October. NOTES FROM A SMALL PARISH - FEBRUARY 2018 Public Forum Not a particularly busy public forum this month as only three members of the public showed up but one parishioner had a lot of queries for the PC. First up was the rubbish bin at Kisimul. It still has not been replaced. There was a discussion that followed about the state of maintenance works in the village, but more of that below. Next was the state of the road at Bullpit Lane. This has not been helped by the construction traffic to the rear of Kisimul school. Photos of the damage have been sent to LCC and Cllr Lloyd will follow up on this. Staying on Bullpit Lane it was reported that there was a major pooling of water at the bend towards South Scarle. This could potentially be dangerous as a number of high voltage cables go under this bend. Cllr John Gagg called Western Power to suggest they should dig a small gulley to allow the water to run off into the drain. Their response….. “go ahead and do it”. Well, we won't be doing that but we will keep on at Western Power to sort it out. Staying with roads, the parishioner reported that the A46 between Swinderby and Pennel's Roundabout was in a terrible state. Whilst the A46 is not our jurisdiction, the Parish Clerk said that she had received notice that there is a Highways England programme of repairs planned for the A46 from Winthorpe all the way to the Pennel's roundabout between January and July 2018. Next the parishioner asked what was happening about the School Safety Zone (SSZ). This was an idea that was considered some time ago but was never implemented as there was no-one to enforce it. Similarly there were no yellow lines painted outside the school because unless you have someone there to issue tickets/warnings, the lines are useless. However, LCC Cllr Mike Thompson is involved with the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership so the PC agreed to approach him for advice and guidance on this. And finally, the new sign posts that have gone up around the village don't seem to have mileage indicators on them. As Minister for Potholes I have taken this on and I will contact LCC Highways. Next, another parishioner had noted that there was a lot of litter including at least one dirty disposable nappy after a recent meeting at the Chapel. He also said that there were problems with irresponsible parking and that noise levels were again higher than should be reasonably expected. The PC are aware of this and decided to write to the Pastor of the Light and Life Mission to invite him to a future meeting. Maintenance Work in the Village There are a lot of outstanding (and I don't mean brilliant) jobs that need doing in and around the village; new village entrance signs, bins to be replaced, speed signs to go up, etc.. Previously the PC had consisted of farmers and builders and people with access to all the appropriate machinery. This is no longer the case and the PC Chair Reg Ketteringham asked if it would be feasible to appoint a Village Handyman. There followed a discussion about minimum hours per month which led to a conversation about a zero-hours contract and so on. In the end it was decided that there were enough councillors to form various working parties, the first of which would be held on the morning of Sunday 25

th of February, when we will put up four of the new village entrance signs. The

other two need new holes digging for posts etc. One parishioner volunteered to re-sit the litter bin at the Lych Gate to the church. There are a couple of trees that need work doing and Cllr Lloyd had got some quotes for these. He put these to the

PC and we went with them. At this point however, Cllr Gagg pointed out that due to changes in local government policy, any quotes for work to be done are therefore “Commercial in Confidence” and we should not be discussing these in open meetings and that in future we would have to go into a closed session to discuss these. So wrists slapped there -. Anyway, these trees are: a sycamore in the Play Area to be lowered by a third on the 20

th Feb. and the tree opposite Cllr Hodgson’s

house and other trees tidied on the 2nd

and 6th March.

History Plaque The final layout of the Village History plaque was discussed and as we have a little bit more money for this, thanks to the lottery grant, it was decided to get the slightly larger model. Part of the plaque will include a history of the village and as a local historian Cllr Geoff Lloyd has supplied some of this history. He has also put himself forward as a point of contact for anyone that wanted to form a local history group. Footpath behind Kisimul School This has now been fenced off but in a straight line and curiously not in the dog-leg that was proposed. We will continue to monitor this situation. Telephone Box Cllr Clark still has a number of wheelie bin stickers. If anyone would like one for their bin, then they can be collected from the phone box. Please just take one per bin. Defibrillator This came up at last month’s meeting with the question being asked “How do I use the defibrillator?” Well, the short answer is, call 999. You will then be directed to the defibrillator if the operator feels that it is necessary. The operator will give you the code to the box and once you have opened the defib you will be guided by voice commands from the unit itself about where to stick the contacts and other operations of the unit. It is very simple, the point being the person who is having to use the unit will be very nervous but that the machine itself is programmed to help the user and will guide you through every step, for example, the unit will not deliver a shock if it senses a heartbeat. So, in short, call 999 and follow the instructions given to you. CHOPS REPORT More interesting times in the oil market! OPEC & Russia’s attempt to drive up world prices appears to have come to an end at present. Production of fracked oil in the USA is significantly on the increase from a much lower cost base than before. It is predicted that next year, the USA will become the largest single oil producer in the world. We are also benefitting from improved £:$ exchange rates. The delivery on the 23 February 2018, once again came from Prince Petroleum who were the cheapest of the 12 quotes which I got. I think that most people will agree that they are a good supplier to the village. The price paid was 42.70p per litre (+5%VAT) – this time prices varied considerably and 48.00p per li-tre (+5%VAT) was the average from 12 sup-pliers. The next delivery into the village will be on Friday 11 May 2018

Our Changing Road Names. Geoff Lloyd The community listings, an early form of census, carried out by the Reverend John Disney in 1771 records the population of Swinderby as 224. This included 17 farmers, 3 publicans, 3 wheelwrights, 2 blacksmiths, a butcher, a school master and a weaver. During the early part of the nineteenth century, the population of Swinderby continued to grow and reached a peak of 574 in 1861. It is perhaps not surprising that on the 1851 map of Swinderby, High Street was called Town Street as locals sought the many services and goods available. However, by 1901 census its name had changed to Vil-lage Street although the census shows over a hundred separate households identified in for this part of Swinderby. In 1658, on the completion of the enclosure of the village, land and buildings were giv-en for the benefit of the poor. Much of this property would have been in the vicinity of Collingham Road known previously as Poor Lane. The process of enclosure involved transferring land to a single owner, in the case of Swinderby the Disneys. However, a consequence of the process was an increase in poverty because villagers lost many rights including the right to graze their animals on common land. The enclosure of Swinderby was a protracted affair taking 30 years to complete with many disputes be-tween parishioners and the Disney family being resolved by the courts. Some of the papers relating to these cases are to be found in the archives and may hold the an-swer to the question. ‘Was the land and buildings given for the benefit of the poor a re-sponse by somebody with a conscience or as a part of a negotiating tactic to ensure completion of enclosure?’ The Poor Trust, established when enclosure was completed is still in existence today but with a very different remit. Back Lane or Manor Road would have allowed the farmers access to their yards and outbuildings; the farm houses fronting on Town Street. In 1851 Station Road was named Scholes Lane. A search on the internet reveals that the word is derived from northern Middle English and means hut or shed. On the map there are no buildings marked on Scholes Lane. However, in 1847 ‘two parcels of land called Richardson Close and Scholes Close were purchased with funds arising from the sale of glebe land to the Midland Railway’ (Lincoln Archives). Was Scholes Close an area containing sheds and huts or possible where somebody called Scholes lived? We could still be using the name Scholes Lane today because the 1851 map shows the proposed station located at the ‘Bull Pit Lane crossing’. Although to be accurate this crossing is on Scarle Lane. As we are in this area if you turn right after the crossing towards Meardsall you would, in 1851, be walking on the Old Lincoln Lane, an interesting name. This lane becomes Morton Road before joining Eagle Road, or as it was then Cross Lane, near Morton Hall. Finally, in 1851, if you were visiting Norton Disney you would have travelled down Cow Lane and directly opposite was the road to the village. This would have disappeared when the airfield was constructed and the new road, called for many years by some, the Concrete Road, built in its present position.
