W elcome to parents, students and the Belridge community to this edition of our newsletter. The solid start to the year has

continued. My focus has been to emphasise a commitment from staff and students to be as good a college as we can be.

“Without commitment, nothing happens” – TD Jakes

At our student assemblies recently I have discussed this with students and outlined our commitment for 2018 to focus on the following priorities: Improved Writing achievement and progress Continued improvement in Attendance Ongoing improvement in responsible behaviour Our focus on writing improvement will follow a similar approach to our successful interventions in Reading & Numeracy. The Whole School Literacy team has developed a strategy focussed on the following emphasis: Improving students’ Sentence structure; Improving students’ paragraph structure;

and Improving students’ cohesion in writing Alicia Holliday and the Literacy Team are running professional learning for staff to support students to become better writers. I am confident that improvement will result, much the same as our significant gain in NAPLAN in Reading and Numeracy (please see page 6-7 Systemic Assessment).

In terms of Attendance, Belridge SC has a terrific story to tell, but hard work still to come. The number of students attending regularly (over 90%) has increased significantly. We will work hard this year to make sure that every student understands that every day counts, and that our regular attendance continues to rise.

Our College gives high priority to building and maintaining positive and caring relationships between all members of the school community. We have in place proactive strategies to prevent and minimise behavioural; incidents, and processes to deal with incidents when they do occur. We aim to have a College where every student can self-regulate and manage their behaviour responsibly, and every staff member and student has the right to work in a safe environment that is free from aggressive behaviour, threats and violence. This is the very clear message that underpins our commitment to provide a high quality school education in our community. Interim Reports and Parent/Teacher Evening All Year 7, 11 & 12 students have received their Term 1 Interim Progress reports electronically. A parent/teacher night was held on Wednesday 14 March to further discuss student progress. I encourage all parents/caregivers to take an active role in the education of their children. If you were unable to attend on the night or unable to secure an interview timeslot please contact the school so alternative arrangements can be made. I urge all students and parents to review their Interim report and to make the necessary adjustments to work and study routines to ensure academic success and achieving to potential. Students still have time to produce results which reflect their capabilities. Year 8 Vaccinations The first round of vaccinations were held on Friday 22 February. The next and final round of vaccinations will be conducted on Thursday 6 September. Please note this date in your diary as there are no catch up sessions. Students absent on the day will need to get vaccinated through their local doctor. Year 10 Vaccinations Students registered to receive the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine will do so on Friday 10 August. Students absent on the day will need to get vaccinated through their local doctor. Year 7 Elevate Education Study Skills Seminars On Friday 9 February all Year 7 students participated in workshops conducted by Elevate Education. The workshops were titled Study Skills Kick Start and Junior Management Time and were presented by university students. A follow-up parent information session was held at the College which was well attended. The main focus in the Study Skills session was Dynamic Reading. Year 7 MESH teachers (Maths, English, Science & Humanities) will incorporate a Dynamic Reading activity within their Teaching and Learning program to compliment and consolidate the Study Skills Kick Start seminars. Teachers in the remaining Learning Areas will also conduct a Dynamic Reading activity in Term 2. Hopefully this will give the students a set strategy when presented with a passage to read, interpret, summarise and commit to memory. It is intended that over time students will automatically use Dynamic Reading in their studies without being prompted. Some examples of student feedback from the seminars are listed: How to make fast notes To plan when to do homework and don’t leave it until the last minute How to make studying easier To schedule my time to be organised To break assignments into smaller parts To make time for everything How to complete work faster and more efficiently Dynamic reading – Fantastic To use colour and break your work into chunks Using pictures and colours like a mind map

Student Planners With the end of Term 1 rapidly approaching, it is timely to remind all students and parents about the Student Planner use. Students are expected to use their Planners in every lesson. There is also a Term Planner page, which enables students to record all assignments and tests for each term on the one page, to give them a visual picture of when everything is due. This encourages students to forward-plan and time-manage better. Please check your child’s planner and see if they have used this tool effectively in Term 1. Vice Principal News - Years 10, 11 and 12

Senior School Student News

Year 11 Year 11 students should be in full stride now. They should be using their school planners to organise their time effectively to not only have all their assessments completed on time, but also to be doing study. Every week, they should be adding to their notes and factsheets and continually testing themselves. Year 12 On the matter of assessments, teachers are still giving me the names of students that have failed to submit these on time. Students lose marks for late submission and this has an adverse effect on their grades and results. Please do your best to help your son/daughter to be organised and plan ahead of time. Students should write all assessment items in the term planner section on pages 18 to 25. This gives a clear picture of what is due and when. Year 12 ATAR Students I gave all the ATAR students a study program taking them up to the end of Week 1, Term 2. It is not compulsory for them to use it, but they must be using some sort of study program. The one I gave them had some very handy hints on it. Please discuss these with your son/daughter.

Year 10, 11 and 12 Students School holidays will be upon us soon. Although students should be using this period to refresh themselves, it can also be wise to put aside a few days to consolidate the concepts they learnt in Term 1. Years 11 and 12 We periodically email parents the externally provided exam preparation programs and study to give students extra confidence for exams. These might be worth consideration. School Environment I continue to be impressed with the lack of litter in the school. This shows that the vast majority of students take a great deal of pride in the school. This is not only a credit to the students and staff of the school, but also a great reflection on our parents.

The six-week challenge required students to explore how such a system can be used to detect and react to environmental variables such as vibration, movement or changes in light, and reflect those values either as changes in the outputs, or as data that is processed by other applications.

The main themes in the activities that comprised the challenge were: 1. Light it up! Create light by mixing the basic colours. See the effect of encoding colours with numbers, detect colours in other applications, obtain their numeric representation and replicate them in the board.

2. Which way is up? Use the accelerometer in the board to detect the orientation of an object in two and three dimensions. Visualize the values read by the accelerometer. Plot the movement detected by the board in a graphical representation.

3. Control! Use the buttons and the accelerometer in the board to control how a ball bounces inside a square in your screen.

4. Dealing with data. Capture the fluctuation of the light sensor as one object hovers over it. Use the data to calculate its speed.

5. Mad music! Look at the sound that is captured by the microphone through a visualisation in your screen. Use this graph to detect beats and calculate tempo.

6. Make something mad! Make your own project with the Arduino Esplora and all its sensors and outputs. ELIZABETH CASSIDY Head of Technology & Enterprise

Systemic Assessment OLNA It has been a busy start to the year in preparing for systemic assessments; the OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) has recently concluded, with 180 of our Year 10,11 and 12 students being required to sit at least one component from Numeracy, Reading and Writing assessments. We purchased licences for two commercial websites, OLNA.com and OLNAWA, which students have been accessing to practice and reinforce learning, and we offered Wednesday afternoon tutorial classes to Years 11 and 12 students. The extracts below, from SCSA’s Year 12 Student Achievement Data 2017 report, show that the college is consistently value adding, with big increases in students meeting the required standard by the end of Year 12, with 96% of Year 12s achieving the standard required for a WACE.

NAPLAN Parents should have received a pamphlet outlining this year’s NAPLAN dates for students in Years 7 and 9. Assessments take place from Tuesday 15 to Thursday 17 of May, 2018. NAPLAN does provide data on student performance that informs government education policy and priorities. As an example, the decline in state and national writing performance has resulted in a Department of Education expectation that schools will “focus on writing achievement across all years, including areas identified in NAPLAN and OLNA testing.” (Doe Focus2018) All students in Years 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the assessments, to be scheduled as follows:

Year Group Tuesday 15 May

Wednesday 16 May

Thursday 17 May

Friday 18 May

Language Conventions (40 minutes) Writing (40 minutes)

The Australia wide results from the 2017 NAPLAN program are now available on the Federal Government’s My School website https://myschool.edu.au/ and clearly show that Belridge Secondary College consistently outperforms ‘Like Schools’ in student progress from Years 7-9 across all NAPLAN components, as shown in the following graphs. The burgundy line (Belridge) shows that despite starting with a lower median achievement in Year 7, Belridge students achieve a similar or higher median score than like school students , represented by the blue line, by Year 9.

continued …. PISA 2018 (Program for International Student Assessment) How many students will be assessed? Approximately 800 Australian secondary schools have been sampled to participate in PISA 2018. Within each school, the number of students sampled will be dependent on the location of the schools. For the states, thirty 15 year old students within each school will be randomly selected to participate in PISA. In the territories, the number of students selected at random within each school will be higher, with 36 students in the Australian Capital Territory and 48 students in the Northern Territory. Which students will be assessed? All students enrolled in our school and born between 1 May 2002 and 30 April 2003 will be eligible to participate in PISA. The majority of students will be 15-year-olds (some students will be 16-year-olds, and may be enrolled in Years 7 to 12. PISA is an inclusive assessment and encourages all sampled students to participate. VET News All senior students have now settled into their courses for the year, and now need to focus on keeping up with the workload for each course. VET certificates are composed of between 9-17 Units of Competence, depending on the certificate. Students must achieve all UOCs in order to achieve the certificate. Any student falling behind will be assessed as ‘at risk’ and will be expected to attend the school library on Wednesday afternoons (1:30-2:30pm) until they have caught up.

ADWPL (Workplace Learning) We have been running inductions for Year 11 VET students in preparation for their first work placement next term. On Wednesday March 14, Year 11 students enjoyed a presentation focusing on work readiness and employer expectations from Natalie Montgomery, an award winning trainer working with WA industry. By now, all students should have completed and submitted their ADWPL application forms, completed their Worksafe SmartMove Certificate and be well on the way to securing a placement for the two week block from Monday May 28 – Friday June 8. Any student who has yet to secure a placement will also be required to remain at school on Wednesday afternoons (1:30-2:30pm) to work on finding a placement with support from Mrs Fuhrmann, our Workplace Learning Co-ordinator. Students should also access their ADWPL Connect class on a regular basis to check for updates, news and notices and to submit required items. World Skills Joel Lovering (Year 12) was featured in our newsletter last year, when he and fellow Year 11 student Aiden Gwatkin placed equal third in the state World Skills final for VET in Schools (Automotive). With the first two placegetters having left their schools to take up apprenticeships, Joel was selected to represent WA at the upcoming National WorldSkills finals to be held in Sydney at the end of May. Joel will be allocated a mentor from the automotive Industry Training Council, along with support from his Certificate II in Automotive Pathways teacher/trainer Mr Bond in preparing for the national competition. Joel will travel to Sydney with the WA team at the end of May. CARLOS NOTARPIETRO Associate Principal

Good luck to the World Skills WA Team who will be off to Sydney in May

GRIP Student Leadership Conference

Page 10

The Student Council attended the annual GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Perth Convention Centre on Monday 19 March 2018. They joined with approximately 600 other secondary students from all around the state to participate in workshops designed specifically for student leaders. The Theme for the Day was CHANGE and the role student leaders can play in bringing about positive change in the school community. Our student councillors joined in all activities with their characteristic enthusiasm. It was also a great opportunity for the student councillors to get to know each other even better and it was encouraging to see the interaction between councillors across Years 8-12. Some responses to the day included:

“A great experience learning how to improve our school culture and create a positive atmosphere” Aspen Sharpe (Year 8)

“Enjoyable, very interactive and lots of fun” Millie Bishop (Year 8)

“Great to learn new things and approaches” Wesley Spaulding (Year 8)

“Very inspirational and valued student leaders” Jazzmyne Gatt (Year 9)

“Engaging, catered for different learning styles” Zachary Booth (Year 11)

“Great encouragement for older student leaders to engage with younger students” Akasha Carstairs (Year 12 Vice Captain)

“Becoming one community” Ben Luplau (Year 12 School Captain)

It is always a pleasure and a privilege to work with the student councillors who are some of the most selfless, giving and committed students in our school. Once again they represented the school with dignity and pride, sending a very positive message to the broader community about the values we uphold at Belridge.

Belridge SC Celebrates Harmony Day 2018

O ur diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Did you know we have 52 different cultures

represented at Belridge SC. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. We asked students to come dressed to represent their cultural heritage or just wear Orange in support of Harmony Day. There was a Cultural Fashion Show in PAC at lunchtime and a Cultural quiz during form. Congratulations to Ms Taylor’s form 10.03 for an almost perfect scorecard. A few highlights for the day were the students from both our mainstream school and the Education Support Centre coming together to meet the challenges of the giant skipping rope at recess, and then The Belridge Dance Company performing twice to sold-out audiences in the PAC at lunchtime. Ms Linto and Ms Currie had been busily preparing these students to put together this wonderful, colorful Middle Eastern Dance showcase since the beginning of term. All in all it was a day of fun and sending the message here at Belridge SC “everyone truly does belong”. Bridgid Lafferty HOSS Senior School

The ‘MSEP’ The Middle School Engagement program or ‘MSEP’ is designed to connect our young men to key male mentors through woodwork and light automotive during period 5 on a Wednesday. The idea isn’t new, it’s based upon the work of many folks such as Arne RUBENSTEIN and ‘The Making of Men’. We’ve been laying the framework for a picnic table for a local primary school with Mr Silva and Andy-the-chaplain, and the servicing of a Suzuki four stroke quad bike with Mr Stevens.

New Year 9 and 10 Reward System The Bookmark Incentive is like a café ‘loyalty’ card, where repeat customers can work towards earning a ‘free’ coffee. Students demonstrate positive behaviours, attitudes and efforts to earn a café voucher. There are ten ‘checks’; two for each outcome: Behaving appropriately; On time and meeting deadlines; Participating fully; Well organized; and Working Independently!

Belsurf 2018

Belridge Secondary College Belsurf Carnival was held at Sorrento Beach on Friday 9 March. The weather conditions were comfortable temperatures, clear skies and a howling sea breeze! Students supported the day exhibiting good behaviour, fair play and participated actively, even though they were sand blasted. The Year 7 students attendance was fantastic with the majority of students participating enthusiastically in all events. Their first experience of a whole school Belsurf Carnival was a positive experience with students actively being involved and showing expressions of pure enjoyment. All students seemed to have a great day whereby staff and students were able to socialise in a relaxed atmosphere. The day allowed competitive individuals to perform, whilst others just enjoyed a variety of beach and water events. The day commenced with the traditional Iron Man and Woman events, consisting of the swim, run and body board legs. This event is open to all students and individual medals are given to the winners and runner-up's. The results were as follows:

Belsurf 2018 Belsurf is as much about participation as it is about performance and throughout the rest of the day we saw fine examples of both. Students participated in a variety of competitive and novelty beach and water events in order to gain valuable points for their house. An individual medal for the winners of the beach flags was presented to each student on the day. The results were as follows:

BOYS GIRLS Year 7 Winner Winner Ky Vardy Tyra Smith Year 8 Winner Winner Caleb Bailey Arwen Deans Year 9 Winner Winner Jaxon Poole Rhythm Brinkworth Year 10 Winner Winner Ben Herbert Abbey Monaghan Year 11 Winner Winner Flavius Decan Bianca Webb Year 12 Winner Winner Lachie Bonolo Holly Fieldgate

named the captain of the First XI team for 2018. He will be going on an international tour to Sri Lanka later this year with the cricket academy. Fred is studying 5 ATAR subjects and achieving well in all of them. He is a high attender sitting on 100% for the year. Fred is a dedicated and friendly student who is very popular amongst both staff and students at the school. He is always willing to help out a fellow student or staff member, without being asked to and gives his best at all times. Fred has been involved with many school events in his time at Belridge, such as our beach carnivals and athletics carnivals. He has also participated in lightning carnivals from Years 8 through to 10. As well as sporting events, Fred also participated in several programs run by the school chaplain. One of these was the peer support program. Fred was selected by staff as a good mentor and role model for younger students who could go to Fred for advice or support. I cannot think of a more deserving student to receive this award, than Fred. Congratulations on a wonderful achievement and all of your success, so far. Tarryn Hunt Year 12 Coordinator

This is an outstanding achievement with only six awards being offered each year. These awards are to recognize and reward our youth and to encourage them to commit to further studies. The City of Joondalup is committed to developing our community’s youth, our future, in many areas and makes available the City of Joondalup Youth Awards. Daniel was selected for the award due to his academic achievements as well as his community involvement. The City of Joondalup will award Daniel with $1000 towards his education. Students currently in Year 10 can apply for the 2019 awards in September this year. Congratulations Daniel on an outstanding achievement. Once again a Belridge SC student has demonstrated outstanding character highlighting the depth and high caliber of youth that make up the student community at Belridge SC. Sydney Dancers Visit Belridge

M arko Panzic and Mitch Wynter, from The Dream Dance Company in Sydney, worked with Belridge Dance students in late 2017 and again asked to come back

and work with the talented students we have here at Belridge at the beginning of March 2018. Marko is originally from Perth and after competing on So You Think You Can Dance Season 1, followed his dream and moved to Sydney to further his experience and career in dance. Marko has now worked for Ricky Martin, Kylie Minogue, Jason Derulo, Ricki-Lee, Jessica Mauboy, will.i.am, Vera Blue, DJ Havana Brown, Kelly Rowland, Sam Sparrow, Little Mix, Rudimental, Peking Duk and many more. Marko’s expertise, creativity and passion for dance has named him Artistic Director of the Australian Dance Festival in Sydney and now the Artistic Director of Australia's First Commercial Dance Company, The Dream Dance Company. Mitch Wynter started dancing at 12 years old on the Gold Coast and started studying ballet full time from the age of 16 at Queensland National Ballet. Mitch has grown up competing and performing throughout Australia and is now a member of The Dream Dance Company. When Mitch isn't travelling and performing with The Dream Dance Company, he is a freelance choreographer who enjoys watching students improve and trying something out of their comfort zones. We are very fortunate to have built a connection with these two amazing teachers, choreographers and dancers. Having them come to Belridge to teach our students skills they too extend their dance knowledge and abilities, which is a wonderful opportunity. Marko and Mitch shared their personal stories of how they have excelled in the dance industry and encourage, motivated and offered advice to our students about their confidence and career or tertiary pathways. We look forward to continuing to work with Marko and Mitch into the future.

Year 10 Dance Workshop   Over the last 2 weeks, the Year 10 Dance Students have been lucky enough to work with an ex student, Olyvia Stevens, with some hip-hop dance classes. Olyvia was the Belridge Dance Company Dance Captain in 2016 and is now teaching dance at Hype Dance Academy. We welcomed Olyvia back to work with the Year 10 dancers and open their eyes to some different styles of dance. The students have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and have responded to Olyvia’s enthusiastic and outgoing personality extremely well. The girls were also given opportunity to ask questions about life after Year 12 and hear the advice Olyvia had for the girls’ last few years at high school. We look forward to Olyvia returning again later in the year. Miss Currie Performing Arts Teacher

Thank you Belridge community!

A huge thank you to parents, students and staff who supported Mission Australia and specifically Christmas Lunch in the Park 2017. Your donations of children’s gifts were greatly appreciated and contributed to supporting the event, which made a difference to the lives of those people in Perth who were vulnerable or experiencing homelessness at Christmas. The infographic below highlights the impact that the 2017 event had in our community. Belridge SC looks forward to supporting this great cause again next Christmas.

BELRIDGE SECONDARY EDUCATION SUPPORT CENTRE ESC - From the Principal’s Desk

I t is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of Term 1 and all students have settled into their new classroom environments across all year levels. We hope that you enjoyed being able to share the range of activities and educational experiences that your child has been participating in at our parent evening on Thursday 15th March. Please take note of the many events that are mentioned in each newsletter as this is the primary method of communicating with our community particularly in reference to activities, meetings, parent information evenings and School Development Days. School Bus Procedures Thank you to those parents who are informing their School Bus Service of any changes to their child’s routine, contacting your individual bus driver in the event that your child is not travelling on the bus is essential. Thank you also to those parents who contact the school or send in written notification advising us of any changes to your child’s travel arrangements or if your child is unwell. Absences Please keep your child at home should they present as being unwell. Should your child present as being unwell, the school will contact parents and/or your emergency contacts so please ensure that your contact details are up to date in the event that we need to contact you. In the event that you are not able to collect your child for any reason please ensure that you have an emergency contact (family, friend) who would be able to collect your child on your behalf. There is no ‘sick bay’ facilities available onsite and as such students who are unwell will need to be collected from school. Parking and Collection Procedures Please also remember that the parking facilities around the school are at a premium and the fenced car park at the front of the school is not to be used by parents/carers for the collection or drop off of students except for ACROD holders. Should you need to collect your child from school during the day please collect them from the front

office and not directly from their classroom as a sign out process needs to be completed. Students are also required to go to the front office if they arrive after the school day has commenced. Years 11 & 12 As our Year 11 and 12’s are continuing to participate in learning experiences that are preparing them for life beyond school it is a timely reminder to parents that liaison with your Local Coordinator from the Disability Services Commission is essential as it is imperative that families have engaged with them to address individual school leaver plans and aspirations in preparation for the future. A Beyond School Parent Information Evening is being held next term and further information will be sent to families when students return for Term 2. Parents of students who are turning 16 are also encouraged to consider their child’s eligibility for the Disability Support Pension through Centrelink and your Local Coordinator may also be of assistance in this process. I wish each and every family a safe and Happy Easter and we look forward to seeing all of our students return on Wednesday 4th April for the final weeks of the school term. Kind regards, Jenine Wall Principal
