T’S CORNER

The February meeting provided us was an opportunity to hear Tony

Molla, Vice President of the Automotive Service Association, describe how ASA is preparing for the future. You could say the automotive repair business has always been technology driven, but this wave will certainly require additional skill sets. Tony believes this is a great opportunity if we are prepared shop owners and stresses that we can't start too soon!

In the short time Tony spoke, you could tell that ASA National has been working on long term plans to help members through this technology paradigm shift. He said that although hybrid vehicles make up less than 1% of the total market, advancements in crash avoidance and stability control issues will be showing up in shops soon. He also reminded us that the average age of a technician is 42 and that 50% will retire in the next 3 to 8 years. The new technology could be a perfect fit for the millennial

mind-set, but we need to start recruiting now.

The unique role ASA plays in Washington not only provides industry insight but also enables policy shaping. An example would be how ASA is managing control of SDRM, a data exchange system that allows access to vehicle security related information. Only through awareness of, and involvement in, policies and the industry as a whole can we understand where the industry is headed and what we, as shop owners, need to do to remain competitive and profitable.

Driving membership and car count is one of the priorities that can be seen in the completely restructured membership department. ASA National is working with strategic partners to attract new employees and customers. For instance, plans are underway with Autozone to promote the ASA organization to other shops. Advance Autoparts and the Highway Department are working together on a poster campaign. Labeled the “Drive Clean -Live it, Breathe it” initiative, it encourages students in grades K through 12 to create posters that draw attention to clean operating vehicles which improve our environment. ASA shops will be collecting the posters which will drive customers to our centers. Both of the promotions aim to increase ASA public awareness as well.

The ASA business model was created in 1951 before efficient fuel ratings, before high speed communications, and even before the internet. Tony said it is not enough to recognize and shape change if you fail to communicate those changes to employees and staff. ASA is working with Bosch, AMI, and other partners on various training methods and delivery systems that will better serve the millennial learning style and will be accessible from their smart phone to a desktop computer.

Don't forget the annual meeting in Orlando, FL, at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort May 2 – 6th. It is only $99 to get in and rooms have been reserved at special rates. Also, don't forget the visit the ASA website at http://asashop.org/webinars/ to learn about the next webinar.

The Tax Cut & Jobs Act (TCJA) was approved by Congress on December 20, 2017, and signed by President Trump on December 22, 2017. The Act

impacts virtually every individual and business in a way not seen since Reagan. With most provisions effective in 2018, it lowers the individual and corporate tax rates, and repeals numerous tax credits and deductions. And, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) loses its financing with repeal of individual mandate.

But what does it really mean and how will it impact a typical shop owner? To answer those questions, we asked long time Certified Public Accountant, Patti Rainer Anderson, to summarize the changes and give insight as to how the membership might prepare for 2018.

Patti began by pointing out that the IRS is a partner whether you like it or not. Patti said there are so many changes that even she is still learning. This is pretty much a complete overhaul of our tax laws where so many rules have changed that it would be impossible to review them all at this time. However, it is her belief that it will stimulate growth as the money moves back to the USA. And lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 to 21% should increase capital investments. She believes it will be good for most business owners, particularly if a business is large scale like the Google or Apple type.

Patti said there is still a lot to be learned by all. It is important to work closely with your CPA, making sure you are maintaining proper and adequate documentation. If you are doing your own payroll then make sure you are using updated tables. Patti says if you can handle the payroll and have Quick Books set up correctly, she can manage your books quite affordably. Visits could be as infrequent as once per quarter. However, she did stress the importance of being able to contact you.

In addition to the larger items listed in the side bar above, Patti had several more items worth mentioning;

Doubles the Section 179 deductions up to 1 million and now includes used assets

Bonus appreciation can be taken whether you have a profit or not

Added Family leave credit 12.5% to 25% depending upon how much you pay

First year vehicle depreciation went from 3,150 to 10,000

Increase the amount of deductions for charitable donations from 50 to 60%

Affordable Care Act mandated payment was eliminated

The 529 savings plan was a college only but now can use for private school

Corporations lost a up to 50% on their employee transportation and meal deductions

No longer can Roth go back to 401K

Alimony payments are no longer deductible

Patricia Rainer Anderson:

Patti has worked extensively with small businesses and their owners in Houston since 2004. She has worked as a bank examiner, internal auditor, and reporting manager in Dallas, Chicago, New York, and Houston. ASA Houston has been using her services for many years. She knows our business and ready to answer your questions. She can be reached at 832-515-1411 or via email at [email protected] .

BENEFITS THROUGH ASA MEMBERSHIPby Nancy Adkins, Membership

During the weekend of February 24-25, XL Parts put on an Open House - extraordinaire - to showcase their extensive warehouse and distribution services for their auto repair customers. They entertained hundreds of shops with outstanding food and adult entertainment for Saturday evening, then, BBQ and family entertainment for

Sunday afternoon. Seventy-two vendors set up booths to display their products and to give prizes to all attendees and for special drawings. ASA Houston had a booth to brand ASA and offer ASA membership with all the ASA benefits to the shops represented. For an attraction, ASA Houston offered two really great drawings: a FREE one-year ASA membership and a FREE 49” TV. The winner of the drawing for the ASA membership is…Omar Bitar of Ashford Auto Clinic. And, the winner of the drawing for the 49” TV is…EFI Auto's Anthony Nguyen.

Hundreds of people who stopped by the booth learned of ASA Automotive Service Association and ASA's great benefits that come with a membership. It has been brought to my attention that many of our current members do not know about these benefits and do not take advantage of them. Allow me to explain how simple this is. Go on the website

irst, I apologize for a couple of Freservations that were lost in transition between phone call and meeting attendance sheets for the February meeting. My bad!

That being said, I would like to emphasis the need to make reservations for our ASA Chapter meetings. While I was thrilled at the near capacity turnout for the February meeting, almost 15 people showed-up that had not made reservations. Fortunately Fratelli’s had planned for extra meals and everyone was able to be served. The opposite problem occurred for the January meeting with reserved spots not showing up and ASA having to absorb the extra costs of meals ordered but not eaten. So you can see that in either case, an exact meal count is very helpful.

The best way to RSVP is vial email in response to the MailChimp meeting notice/RSVP sent out prior to

meeting, sometimes twice, or the emailed version of Shop Talk. We will also continue to call and/or email as well to remind you about the meeting and you can RSVP then as well. If you RSVP via one of the MailChimp emails, you may still get a phone call because both processes are happening at once. If that happens, simply tell us you replied via email and I will see your RSVP and get you on the list. We definitely need to know the number attending. Names of attendees would also be helpful for check-in expediency.

If you cannot commit at the time of phone call, please remember to let me know through email or phone call if you decide to attend so we can make any adjustments to final meal count.

So, there are a variety of ways to make sure your spot is reserved at the meeting. See the RSVP reply options on right.
