We have enjoyed another busy week of academic, sporting, and cultural pursuits at Steyn City School. It is a privilege to watch our children engage in learning in every area of our school. Two moments this week demonstrated the beauty of our growing school family to me. The first was our celebration of Pi Day and Einstein’s birthday on Thursday. The buzz in the school was palpable as children of every age grappled with the mathematical concept of Pi while enjoying round food of every kind. The younger children dressed in mathematical and scientific themes and our school family came together at the end of the day to watch the senior students compete in the Pi Day Competition which asked students to memorize as many digits of Pi as possible. The winning team is to be congratulated for memorizing an astounding 220 digits of Pi! The image of our older and younger children joining forces to explore a fascinating mathematical concept demonstrates our passionate belief that children who are allowed to be curious will learn and grow. Thank you to our Mathematics and Science Departments for arranging and managing a very successful day. MARCH 2019 | FIRST TERM | VOLUME 2 #9

My second moment this week was watching a visiting sporting team arrive to compete against Steyn City School. Our sporting programme is busy and varied, and I am filled with admiration as I watch our netball players practise in the early mornings and our cricket teams play well into the afternoons. It is vitally important to nurture sporting values in our children. Through sport, children learn the values of team work, collaboration, problem-solving, conflict resolution, fitness, and health. These values will serve our children well into their adult lives. Our children are committed to our sporting programme and play with determination and commitment, and our sporting results demonstrate this. We are a small school punch-ing well above our weight on the sporting field and this makes us so proud of our children and our sporting programme.

Thursday 21 March is Human Rights Day which brings the sobering reminder that South Africa’s history is painful and complex. Our assembly next week will focus on helping our children understand the power of treating all people with equal respect and dignity. We wish you a restful long weekend.

A CALL FOR ADOPTION JENNIFER COSSLETT

Ginger II, the adorable Grade 4 class mouse, had 9 cute little babies a few weeks ago. They soon need to be weaned and separated from one another. They make great pets as they’ve been bred in captivity. If you would like a pet mouse for your child, please contact Jennifer at [email protected], if you have a spare bird/hamster/mouse cage at home, please may we borrow it so that the mice can each get their own space.
