Family liFe Center direCtor and Pastoral assistantNick Malamas
Greetings everyone! Another wonderful, busy month for our youth and the Family Life Center.
We had a great Super Bowl Party where we shared food, fun and football. A week later, our Church’s Greek School held their Apokreatiko dance at the FLC where a nice time was had by all.
From February 15th to 17th, Dayton Ohio’s Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church hosted over 300 kids for their 45th Annual GOYA B-BALL Tournament. Churches from the Metropolis of Detroit - Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and New York participated. We lost our 1st game with less than 5 seconds left, but regrouped and won two games to take 3rd place. Next year, even better!
Basketball was the main draw but our 20 youth also took part in a community service blanket project, Q and A session with the Bishop and priests and a wonderfully, energetic dinner dance. We even surprised Alexia Kouimanis who celebrated her 18th birthday at the event. Bishop Nicholas was highly interactive and celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Sunday. I heard many positive comments about our kids, they were great!
Four days later, GOYA kept the momentum going by getting together for a really nice pizza party at the Family Life Center. Lot’s of parents stayed for fellowship as well.
Up next, skiing in Ellicottville, a movie night, lenten services, a retreat that will be held on March 16th and the Oratorical Festival.
Of course, we encourage our youth to show up on Sundays and participate in the life of the church as Altar Boys, taking
communion and attending Sunday School.
Please pray for us as we all work hard to serve our youth in the most engaging, creative ways possible Thanks!

ParISh cOUNcIL PrESIDENT’S rEPOrTPaula Schembri, Parish Council President
Greetings! The first couple of months of 2019 have been busy and I would like to provide you with a summary of what we are working on.
Update on 976
The closing on the sale of the property commonly referred to as ‘976’ (fka AAA of Western New York) which is the building adjacent to the church (aka ‘146’) to Gurney, Becker and Bourne took place on Thursday, January 17, 2019. Below is illustrated a high-level summary of the closing statement/financials:
• Purchase price - $950,000
• AGOC held mortgage - $850,000
- Terms
• 5% interest for 20 years
- This will result in monthly payments of approximately $6,000
• $3,500 to Investments
• $2,500 to Operating Account
• Amount to AGOC at closing - $25,044.68
- Funds will be used to reimburse the appropriate accounts which were used to pay necessary expenses of the building during its vacancy.
• Closing Statement available for review upon request.
I am going to restate the parking restrictions that I mentioned in February’s Glad Tidings:
The Agreement and associated documents include a ‘Declaration of Easements’ which details the parking arrangements. Parking is and always has been an important consideration for our com-munity; much time, energy and thought was given to finding a suitable tenant and working through the issues pertaining to the church’s parking needs.
The following will serve to illustrate the parking arrangements that have been agreed to and by which we must abide:
• The church will retain ownership and exclusive use of the sec-ond and third parking lots that are accessed from our parking lot or W. Utica Street. These lots will be available to members of our community and visitors.
• The church will be granted exclusive use of five parking spaces in the main parking lot located directly behind the adjacent prop-erties (976 and 146). These spaces will be designated for use by clergy, church employees and handicapped drivers.
• The church will be granted exclusive use of the main parking lot as follows:
- Sunday anytime
- Weekdays after 5:30 pm
- Saturdays after 1:00 pm
- Baptisms and Weddings with advance notice
- Funerals with minimum advance notice of 48 hours
• The church will be granted exclusive use of the main parking lot, driveway from Delaware Avenue, outdoor areas that belong to the new owner for a period of eight consecutive days, consis-tent with the dates of the annual Greek Fest with such dates to be determined by the church.
Family Life center
The Family Life Center sustained water damage earlier this month when a sprinkler water pipe located in the vestibule froze and broke as a result of the bitter cold and winds that we ex-perienced. We are working to determine the cause and obtain estimates for the repair. I will provide an update in April’s Glad Tidings.
Finances
One of the most important responsibilities of the Parish Council is oversight of the church’s finances. In August of 2016, the church lost all its data when the server crashed due to an electrical storm. This loss of data created a multitude of issues and concerns. As a result, the server has been replaced with a backup system and an independent audit was commissioned by the Parish Council and performed by Freed Maxick to en-sure fiscal accuracy and efficiency. In order to ensure continued accuracy and efficiency, our accounts must be reconciled on a monthly basis. The Parish Council is actively soliciting proposals from local reputable accounting firms to perform this function on an ongoing basis. Until a vendor is selected, Freed Maxick will continue in this capacity. I will inform the community of the decision in April’s Glad Tidings.

The Family Life Center has become a reality for our parish. We are thankful to all those who have contributed to the Capital Campaign and thus assisted in the construction of our beau-tiful facility.
It is also appropriate to thank, and recognize, those parishioners who contributed to the purchase of the thirty acres of land in Lancaster land where the Family Life Center now stands. Without their leadership, initiative, and generosity, our Church community would not have been able to reach this goal.
The land was bought in 2005 for $425,000. The following parishioners made the following donations:

The greatest gift we can give to our children

which has a lifelong value and significance

During this Easter Lenten period, the Sunday School students and their parents are encouraged to participate in the evening Presanctified Liturgies (followed by a Lenten meal) on Wednesdays and the Salutations to the Theotokos on Fridays, Sunday Lenten Series, as well as the services during Holy Week. Fasting during this Easter Lenten period is also an important aspect. The primary aim of fasting is to make us conscious of our dependence upon God. St. John Chrysostom says that fasting is “abstinence not only from food but from sins. The fast should be kept not by the mouth alone but also by the eye, the ear, the feet, the hands and all members of the body.” Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are central to the Lenten season. Our students are invited to attend the Annual Good Friday retreat on April 26th. The retreat includes lessons and discussion on Holy Week, time for confession, fellowship, and a Lenten lunch. The retreat concludes in the church after the Apokathilosis Service. These memories will last a lifetime and help the youth grow as Orthodox Christians.

Our school is getting ready for the 25th of March / Greek Independence Day celebration that will take place on Sunday, March 24th in the Demakos Center.
For the Greek nation, March 25th is a double holiday. Greeks celebrate a historical achievement, the War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, and a religious event, the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The Greek Flag is a distinct part of the Greek nation, and a symbol of our national pride. It consists of a white cross on a blue ground in the upper left corner of the flag, and the remaining area is filled with nine alternating blue and white horizontal stripes. The cross represents the Greek Orthodox Church that played a crucial role in the fight for independence, and the nine stripes are said to represent the number of syllables in the Greek phrase: “Eleutheria H Thanatos” (translated in English as “Freedom or Death”); this was a battle cry during the final revolt against the Ottoman Occupation. The origin of the Greek Flag as we know it today, actually dates back to 1822. It was during the First Greek Assembly in Epidaurus that a universal national flag was adopted, as well as its particular arrangement – white cross on blue background. Prior to that, a large variety of flags was used, that, aside the cross, featured saints, or mottoes such as “Freedom or Death”, or the phoenix (symbolizing the rebirth of the Greek nation), or fasces like emblems of Filiki Etaireia (the secret society that organized the uprising), and others employed the byzantine double headed eagle. The white cross on blue field flag had first appeared many years before the revolution of 1821. It was in 1807 when a military leader, Yiannis Stathas, used the white cross on blue flag on his ships. This first flag featuring this design was created and hoisted in the Evangelistria Monastery in Skiathos, where the local Bishop swore several prominent military leaders to the flag (such as Theodoros Kolokotronis and Andreas Miaoulis), who had gathered to consult regarding an uprising. The current Greek Flag wasn’t officially adopted until December 1978. Greek flag on land, 1822–1969 and 1975–78.
National flag for use abroad - since 1978 the sole national flag of Greece.
The nickname of the Greek Flag is Galanolefki (Γαλανόλευκη), meaning “The Blue and White”.

Ascetics of the World (Vol. 1)
Each Wednesday during Lent the church community will meet after the Liturgy of Presantified Gifts for a Lenten pot-luck dinner in the Family Life Center. Following dinner, Father Christos will lead a discussion of a few chapters of Ascetics of the World.
From the bookseller:
Sanctity is not the exclusive privilege of monastics and priests, but rath-er a possibility for every Christian who has correct faith, repentance, and a mindset to struggle. This collection, by an anonymous monk on the Holy Mountain, includes the biographies of pious clergymen and laypeople who lived in Greece from the Turkish occupation down to today. Their strong faith and love for Christ motivated them to keep the commandments and to undertake great ascetic struggles (fasts, vigils, prostrations). From the prologue:
“In this collection are presented biographies of people who lived in various parts of Greece and other countries, and at various times in the Turkish Occupation down to today. They were of different ages, races, and states (clergymen or laypeople, family men or lay monastics). They each had their character and their personal struggle, but they also had
some common characteristics between them: strong faith and great love for Christ (from the Prologue).”
View Be the Bee video regarding the release of Ascetics of the World: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn9alxcXkUE
We will be meeting March 13, 20, 27, April 3 and 10. The Liturgy of the Presantified Gifts is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. and the Lenten Potluck and discussion at 7:00 P.M at the Family Life Center. The book is available in the church bookstore and library.
Please note: It is always recommended that spiritual literature be discussed with your spiritual father or mother, or father confessor.

March always seems to be the month when things start to get a lot busier, and this March is no exception! We have our Wednesday evening Pre-Sanctified Liturgies every week, followed by a pot-luck dinner and book discussion. If you plan to attend the dinner, please bring some type of Lenten dish to share. If you are not sure what we might need, please check with me, or Marge Manos.
One of the largest functions that Philoptochos hosts every other year is the Annunciation Vespers, on March 24. This year, that date not only falls on a Sunday, but the arrival of our guests for Vespers is about 3 hours after the conclusion of the Greek Independence Day celebration, hosted by the Greek School.
We are going to need many “helping hands” to set-up for the post-Vespers meal, and to clean-up after our guests depart as well. We are expecting a larger-than-normal head count this year, as we will also have our local Pan-Orthodox groups joining us. We will need many different Lenten dishes donated, and many people to help with setting-up and serving our guests.
I am asking that all Philoptochos members please help us with this event in whatever way possible. We could even use a few gentlemen to help us with setting up table and chairs, after the Independence Day program. There will be a list available shortly, so we know what kind of dishes everyone will be bringing, and we can avoid a lot of duplication. It would also be great if some of the GOYANS who attend the Vespers could stick around afterward to help with the clean-up. Please check with me or Marge, to see how you can help; it will be greatly appreciated!
In February, I received a letter from the Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos Board, announcing the establishment of the Florence G. Stefanou Scholarship, which will be offered to qualifying high school seniors or undergraduate students. Please see the announcement on the opposite page.

Plan to attend our Tuesday March 26th Luncheon Meeting to be held at the Family Life Center, at 12 noon. Since Lent be-gins Monday March 11th, the meal will feature Lenten dishes, no meat or dairy. I know from last year that those of you who generally bring “a dish to share” make a great variety of wonderful Lenten soups, salads, casseroles, and desserts. So, if so inclined, please bring a Lenten dish to share. Thank You!
Sunday February 10th, Marion Halstead’s daughter and grand-son, Liz and Tyler Kline, gave me a beautiful Backgammon Set; a gift to the Senior Club, in memory of Marion from daughters Liz and Linda, and their families.
Unfortunately, this winter we lost three well-known parish women. Pauline Eoannou and Helen Kary, whom we have not seen in quite some time, and Maria Busmalis who was with us at the Christmas Luncheon. Our deepest sympathy to their families; “May their Memories be Eternal.” We remember each of them fondly and will miss their presence.
March will be a busy month for our parish, offering may opportu-nities for a meaningful Lenten season.
• Saturday of the Souls - March 2nd, 9th, and 16th at the FLC
• Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts, followed by a Lenten Potluck meal Wednesday March 13th, 20th, a& 27th at the FLC
• Benjamin Rossiter’s Ordination to the Deaconate Sunday March 10th
• Retreat presented by Aristotle Papanikolaou “Why Be Orthodox?” March 16th at the FLC
• March 24th Greek Independence Day celebration, followed by the Annunciation Vespers and Reception with our Philoptochos Sisters from Annunciation, Rochester, and the Buffalo Pan-Orthodox Parishes
For now, mark your calendars and plan to attend the events I’ve noted, and I definitely hope to see you at the Tuesday March 26th Luncheon at the Family Life Center on Genesee St.
Joyce McDaniels will be collecting the 2019 dues - $10. Be sure she has your name, address, phone numbers (land line and cell), e-mail address, birthdate (month, date, and year). I’m planning something special for the 5’s and 10’s monthly this year.
As usual, offer a ride to someone who needs transportation, or maybe carpool.
ENJOY a BLESSED, PraYErFUL LENT

Our choir is more than half way through the singing year and we have a dedicated and committed group of singers. We have made a rather successful transition to a capella singing and will use the organ if and when a permanent player becomes available, or on an as-needed basis. We are also singing downstairs now instead of the choir loft so we are much more accessible. We will be learning the new Kevin Lawrence music and translations as we get into 2019 so it’s a great time to join the choir. The new music will match the new hymnals that are forthcoming.
We have some great news to share! Our adult choir will be hosted by the St. Nicholas Church choir in Jamestown on March 30-31. We will have ample time to share fellowship with them and to make some new friends. We are planning to share the Divine Liturgy on Sunday with them. It promises to be a wonderful time for all of us!
Please do join our choir! If you’ve sung before and have been away from it for a while, we welcome you. If you haven’t sung before and have been told you have a good singing voice we welcome you. If you read music, that’s a plus but not a pre-requisite. There are no auditions to be concerned about so please join us soon! I can be reached at [email protected] or 912-6343. I do accept text messages.

Late last year, the Parish Council appointed a Stewardship and Outreach Committee to propose and implement ideas to increase parish stewardship. The Stewardship and Outreach Committee has started working on a number of projects.
The Committee first met in December of 2018 to organize and articulate its purpose. We sought guidance from Father Christos, the Parish Council, and Archdiocesan stewardship resources, looking at concepts of ministries, outreach, inclusion, and participation. We agreed that our focus is to help create a culture where people feel invested in our church, committed to the faith, and actively engaged in the ministries of our parish. This should result in increased numbers of stewards and increased contributions.
The Committee’s first activity was to brainstorm ideas related to that broad focus, and a host of ideas emerged. These ideas were grouped and prioritized into the following categories:
1. Enhance communication and transparency about the “business” of the parish
2. Encourage a “My Annunciation Family” mentality among parishioners – help people bond, trust, connect, return, and feel a part of the parish
3. Improve our print and electronic communications, and make more use of social media
4. Improve our methods for soliciting and obtaining stewardship contributions
5. Other categories that received high priorities:
a. Improve how we welcome new members or visitors
b. Re-affirm the process of holding General Assembly meetings and increase their effectiveness and inclusiveness
c. Develop more depth in the leadership of our ministries
d. Gather more information about our community – a survey
With approval from Father Christos and the Parish Council, we will focus on these categories for implementing projects and activities. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months.
The Committee welcomes YOUR feedback, ideas, and suggestions. If you are interested, you are also most welcome to join the Commit-tee (email John Melithoniotes, [email protected], call him at 839-1697, or leave a message with the church office, 882-9485).
Current Committee members: Teddi Annas, Father Christos Christakis, Nicholas Malamas, John Melithoniotes (Chairman), Keli Morphis, Pat Papafagos, Angeline Pappas, Vicki Pappas, and Matthew Thompson.
