Large, elaborate Smiles n’ Chuckles Chocolates Valentine box
This box came from the Smiles and Chuckles Factory in Kitchener, Ontario. The history of this company is as follows:
1915 Started as the Metcalfe Candy Co.
1945-47 Sold to Smiles and Chuckles Co.
1954 Sold to Laura Secord
1980 Laura Secord sold to Nestle’s. The brand was discontinued.
Early 1994 The Smiles and Chuckles brand was re-established with 3 old favorites and 10 new products.
In times past, a boyfriend who showed up with such a fancy box would have a serious relationship in mind.
Nowadays, he might get the brush-off for derailing the diet!
This box has no UPC code; must have been sold between 1950s and 1970s.
Bessie Hogan
My Mother worked at the Smiles n’ Chuckles plant in Kitchener. Workers were allowed to take home all the broken and imperfect chocolates. They got so sick of chocolate! To this day, I don’t really like chocolate.
Bette
In this March 1909 Buster Brown calendar postcard, Tige says “Where are the Lion and the Lamb”
Have you ever wondered where this saying originated? I was surprised to find that the actual proverb is: In like a lion, out like a lamb, because when March starts, it’s still winter, and by the end of the month spring has begun.
As it turns out, there are a few origin theories. There is the stars, for one. At this time of the year, Leo is the rising sign; by April, it’s Aries (“kid” just doesn’t have quite the same ring as “lamb”, though.)
Some have pointed out that Jesus arrives as the sacrificial lamb but will return as the Lion of Judah. Which, weather-wise, means a false-spring.

Vintage cast iron nut cracker: POTTER, Sapulpa, Okla.
1905 International Harvester 5 hp engine
Large amber-colored rearing horse by Murano
The man who had the huge inventory of model cars, was a new vendor!
There were only 4 rows of vendors in the second building. Apparently 40 dealers cancelled because of the inclement weather across the U.S. Still a great show.

In Memoriam:
On behalf of the club membership, we wish to express our sincere sympathy to
The family and friends of Joyce Smith. Joyce passed away peacefully on Friday, February 15, 2019 at the age of 82 years.
A Funeral Liturgy was held on Tuesday, February 26 at Connelly-Mckinley St. Albert Funeral Home.
Joyce and her late husband, Ray were Lifetime WRAC members. Thanks to Bill Borgwardt, after Ray’s death in 2015, she continued to attend our monthly meetings until the last year.

EGG CUPS By Bessie Hogan (originally published in the March 2005 Dig & Pick)
Pocillovy – the collecting of egg cups
Most of us reach for an egg cup for convenience in eating the breakfast egg without giving it a thought, but to the pocillovists they are a treasure. Egg cups were discovered when digging was done on the site of Pompeii which demonstrates they are not a modern piece of housewares.
Egg cups come in a single shape on a pedestal of some sort or in a double shape where the eggs are taken out of the shell and mixed in the larger end of the egg cup. The materials to make egg cups range through wood, plastic, ceramics, metal, right up to crystal and precious metals. Collectors of Fiesta ware, Spode, pressed glass, milk glass, and hobnail are just a few of the brands that can be found.
Egg cups may have attached saucers, painted faces, can be in the shape of almost any animal or bird, have flower patterns, bands of color and some even have handles. Like all items some are pricier than others, Wedgewood being for the avid collector, for a novice collector they can be found on the retail market, in discount stores, garage sales and thrift shops, especially during the Easter season.
This collection does not take much room; old spice racks can accommodate several egg cups and two or three racks make a nice display.
We know of a lady who came to the annual sale of the WRAC with 300 egg cups and sold all but 5 in two days.
