Executive Director of Dinosaur Ridge gave a fascinating presentation about Dinosaur Ridge. Dinosaur Ridge is listed as # 1 in the USA for Dinosaur tracks in our country. This is not facts from Colorado but Paleontologist in our country. Another interesting fact; would you believe during the times of Dinosaurs we were at sea level and had beaches. WOW!! Hard to believe with our present elevation. Have been so close and never been there. As soon as weather warms up, if you have not been there you must put it on your to do list. I n March of 1946 the Golden Lions Club, itself just a little over three

years old, chartered the Arvada Lions. The club went on to be one of the very successful clubs in Colorado. Membership grew to over 80 people. The club ran many innovative service projects including hunter safety

courses, provided eye exams and glasses for the needy, collected eyeglass for re-distribution, held KidSight vision screenings and sponsored special needs campers at the Colorado Lions Camp. The club obtained its own club building and also built a special building for the Colorado Lions Camp. However, things change. The club membership dropped, and they were forced to sell their building. By January 2019 the club had only two members and decided to give up its charter. District Governor Holly Rutherford-Allen asked that I form a committee to see if we could re-organize the club. This effort began in October of 2019, but we had a deadline. To re-instate the club without having to organize it as a completely new club we had to sign up ten members and have all the paperwork done by January 27th. PDG Roy Donaldson (GMT), PDG Steve Kinsky (Denver Lions), PDG Ted Peterson (2nd VDG) Lion Jon Berquist (Golden Lions) and I formed the committee. There was a whirlwind of activity. We reached out to community leaders with a Community Needs Assessment to identify issues the new club might want to address. We created and distributed posters for business, churches, etc. We developed a call list of Arvada business from the Chamber of Commerce. We also enlisted the help of a Social

Media specialist to create a new web site and Facebook page, but, more effectively ,she joined several local Arvada neighborhood Facebook pages and posted the information about the new club. This allowed us to focus our reach to those already interested in the Arvada community. We had two information meetings on January 7th and had eight people attend. We also had several prospects who indicated interest but were unable to attend. A third meeting was held January 21st with three additional prospects. By that point we felt we could reach our goal, but we still had work to do to get the full ten members. On January 25th the committee was able to submit paperwork with a complete listing of our ten members to DG Holly, to be forwarded to LCI. This included Lion Lois Painter, who had served as president of the club prior to its disbanding. Monday February 17st the Arvada Lions held their organization meeting, chaired by PDG Ted Peterson who will act as Guiding Lion for the club. Officers were selected: President Jerry Riley; Secretary/Treasurer Pam Terry and Membership Chair Doyle Beavers. The club will meet the first Monday of each month at IHOP at 5280 Wadsworth Bypass at 6pm for the time being. If you have a chance, please join them as they can use your support. We are in the process of arranging a Charter Night targeted for Monday, April 13th. If you are interested in learning about the different approaches we used to attract 10 members in a short time, come to the Zone C meeting on March 21, 10 am 12 noon at the Arvada City Hall, 8101 Ralston Road, Arvada, CO 80002. More information to follow. Robert Storrs, Zone C Chair

I f you want to get a favor done by some obliging friend,

and want a promise, safe and sure, on which you may depend, Don't go to him who always has much leisure time to plan, But if you want your favor done, just ask the busy man (or woman).

T he man/woman with leisure never has a moment he can spare,

He's always "putting off" until his friends are in despair. But he whose every waking hour is crowded full of work forgets the art of wasting time, He cannot stop to shirk.

The Busy Man or Woman

S o when you want a favor done, and want it right away,

go to the man/woman who constantly works twenty hours a day. He'll find a moment, sure, somewhere, that has no other use. And help you, while the idle man/woman is framing an excuse.

Robert (Bob) Storrs - Candidate for 2nd Vice District Governor District 6C

Background

L ion Robert has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado as

well as a master’s in business administration also from CU. He worked for Western Electric for 30 years as a software engineer and production

manager. On one assignment he managed a department of over 200 employees. Bob was a member of the Westminster Jaycees where he served as president. Bob is widowed and retired. He has two sons and three grandchildren.

Experience

B ob joined the Golden Lions Club (GLC) in September 2005 and has served as President,

2017-2018, Director, 1st Vice President, Immediate Past President and two terms as Treasurer. During this time, he has sponsored several new Lion members who are still active today. As chair for five years of the GLC KidSight program, Bob grew the program and instituted management processes to allow the club to annually screen at 105 schools with over 500 volunteer hours

and with over 4,800 kids screened. He also chairs the Finance Committee for GLC. Lion Bob is a member of the KidSight Board of Trustees and has over the years worked with KidSight Director DG Holly Rutherford-Allen in negotiation with the Jefferson County School District. He has recently recommended a new outreach KidSight program which DG Holly is currently finalizing. Lion Bob has served as 6C Zone C chair for two years and is on the Board of Directors for the Golden Backpack Program where he also serves a treasurer.

Leadership

A s president of the Golden Lions Club, the club grew by 5 members to reach a membership level

of 60. The club also started a new annual Arbor Day service project. As treasurer, a new software system was adopted that allowed for clearer tracking of the club’s revenue and expenses. As Zone C chair he conducted an online zone meeting for all clubs in the district which allowed district leaders to present information on their various programs. Reviews of the meeting were very positive. Finally, Bob has chaired the steering committee that successfully re-started the Arvada Lions Club with ten members. He is the sponsor for four of those new members.

S ponsoring a new Lion is a wonderful achievement, but with that achievements comes responsibilities

as well. Your responsibility does not end when the new Lion is inducted, it has just started. Like anything new, one needs guidance and positive encouragement. They don’t need to be thrown to the wolves. As a sponsor you must guide and mentor the new Lion in club procedures, projects, committees, protocol and yes fun activities. You must lead by example. It is important to get the new Lion involved in the club, but, do not overwhelm them either. Baby steps. It is very easy to burn a new Lion out, as they are excited being a new Lion and many times want to be involved in everything. It is the sponsors responsibility to make sure that things are done on an even keel. The future of the new Lion depends on that. If your new Lion is missing meetings, find out why and what you can do to help. It is up to you the sponsor to keep track of the Lion you sponsored. Try to remember when you were a new Lion. (For many of us it has been many years ago.) How do you think your experience as a new Lion could have been better? Make sure your new Lion feels welcome. Introduce them to members they have not met before. Make sure that they are allowed to express their thoughts and

ideas. Listening and having the new Lion involved builds their trust and confidence as a Lions club and its members. Keep close contact with your new Lion. Check in frequently with the new Lion to see how they are doing. Ask if they have any concerns or questions or positive experiences to share. Let them know you are only a phone call or e-mail away. (make sure they have your contact info.) Don’t wait to be surprised by a sudden non attendance or ambivalence. And last but not least, it is the responsibility of the WHOLE CLUB to help the sponsor mentor the new Lion. Make sure as Golden Lions you introduce yourself to the new Lion and offer a helping hand if they need one. Sometimes after a new Lion joins they might bond with another Lion other than just their sponsor. That is ok. Work with the sponsor to build a positive experience for the new Lion. T he cabinet meeting discussed many topics.

Advocates for the Blind

Michael Wright, Advocates for the Blind and a Lion, presented a program that the district may get involved in. Basically, there is a $250K Sight First grant

available to the district that can be used to purchase vision devices for organizations that support those with vision needs mainly to seniors. The good thing is this is not a matching grant, so we do not have to come with $250K. Advocates for the Blind will aid in identifying potential users and the Lions would basically do the paperwork. More information to follow.

KidSight

For those who will be receiving a State Tax refund, you will now have the opportunity to donate some of that to KidSight. Specific instructions will be coming from DG Holly.

9News Health Fair

A lot of changes. Many locations are not being run this year including YMCA facilities and one hospital change.

a. A new offering this year is a discount for multiple test. So, anyone who takes a second or third text will receive a $10 discount for each of the tests. Of course, it will now fall on the cashiers to account for these discounts.

b. All of the credit card machines are being replaced this year. The only bad thing is the new devices will not provide a total for the day. So, the cahiers will have to sum up all the CC receipts at the end of the day.

c. Golden will have only one Health Fair this year – Stride at 25th and Wadsworth. More information from Wendy soon.

Conventions

District 6C Convention is Saturday May 2nd, 9am to 3pm at Bethany Lutheran Church, Ease Hampden Ave, Cherry Hills Village, CO 80113. Election of officers will occur, and I hope you will attend to support me in my bid for 2nd Vice District Governor. I will have registration forms at our meetings and will be emailing a copy to all. The cost of $25 will be paid by the club if you submit the registration form to me by April 16th.

State Convention

State Convention is Friday and Saturday May 15th and 16th at the Double Tree Inn at 919 7th Street, Greeley, CO 80631. In addition to much Lions activity, the convention will include a Sock Hop on Friday night with a live band playing songs from the 50’s. I will have registration forms at our meeting and will send via email. The club will pay for Lion members registration and meals. You are responsible for hotel, please reserve directly with Double Tree, and the cost of a significant other. Forms must be turned in to me by April 9nd so we can make the early bird registration. Attach to the form any checks for your significant other.

Change in the District Constitution

There will be a vote at the District convention, May 2nd,to allow Past District Governors to have voting rights in addition to the number assigned to the club based on size of the club. So, a club with 3 assigned delegates would in addition have any PDG in the club as additional delegates. There will be a presentation of the Pros and Cons prior to the vote on this.

Reports from the VDGs, Zone Chairs and the Global teams were made.

Look for more information in the upcoming district newsletter.

Under membership Idaho Springs reported that they held an annual mixer with the Chamber of Commerce and had signed up three new members over the last two years.

Idaho Springs was recognized for its effort with 9News Health Fair. They don’t just cahier but rather they co-sponsor the entire fair. And this year they are doing that from scratch as the Fair was not run in Idaho Springs last year.

Report on the Arvada Lions was given. (Full report on page 3) Golden Lions that attended were: Lions Jon

Berquist, John Spice, Bob Storrs, Greg Storrs and Roger Wagstaff.
