February 19th, 2020 - KMGS Monthly Meeting (1) Meeting Called to Order by Interim President Mary Nettesheim at 6:32 PM.

(2) The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the 28 Members in attendance.

(3) One new Guest present: Jason R. Who brought in a 15 pound specimen for examination by the membership. The KMGS also welcomed “new member” Maureen Conly to the club.

(4) In order to accommodate our guest speaker – the meeting agenda was suspended to allow the Program to be delivered before the business agenda. Meeting was suspended at 6:37 pm.

(5) Wanda Buckland Riehl of the Kettle Moraine Prospectors of Wisconsin, presented a variety of equipment and specimens; used and found while prospecting for gold, minerals and gemstones in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest. The program was informative and well received and appreciated.

(6) At 7:35 pm the business meeting was resumed, with the Minutes of the January Meeting being read by the Secretary. Motion to accept as by Tony Ilecki. Second by Debbie Elftman. Motion Carried.

(7) Treasurers Report was read by Megan McDonald. Tony Ilecki made the motion to accept as read. Second by Winnie Mading. Motion carried.

(6) Tech Committee Report was presented by Megan McDonald. Vendors were updated on the website and we lost the video portion of the sight and Megan is addressing it.

(7) Show Committee Report: John Rettler emphasized that the 2020 is just over three weeks away. Show plans are mostly complete and the final details are underway. Flyer were distributed to all members to give to neighbors, friends and businesses for posting where they shop and get gas etc.

All members who do not have a display, demonstration or are a vendor, are encouraged to volunteer to help set up on Friday, and any of the numerous tasks during the show as they arise.

A volunteer sign-up sheet was circulated, and Mary Rettler will oversee calling, scheduling and assigning to tasks where needed. The show will be bigger and better than ever and a huge success if we all work together and the weather cooperates.

(8) The Education Committee Report: Mike Andrysczyk was not in attendance – as he is still laid-up but is progressing. Tony Ilecki spoke with him, and he is scheduling School visits at the Greenfield School District locations, and has several others requesting KMGS educational visits. All members willing to assist or in forming their own presentation to educate students are encouraged to do so.

(9) The Sunshine Committee Report: Birthday wishes go to: Richard Hamann, Mary Nettesheim, Garret Schumacher & Winnie Mading. Continued on next page

Also, the Dinosaur Museum is just down the street as all are close by for a “Day- Trip” in April or later.

FEBRUARY MEETING RECAP The February meeting started with the program of the month. Wanda Buckland Riehl of The Kettle Moraine Prospectors presented a story filled tutorial about the minerals of Wisconsin and the equipment needed to find them. Tips included what to look for when searching for minerals like gold, silver and other gemstones that can be found in the state, and the equipment to use, like screens and pans. Specimens of the many minerals they have found were passed around for inspection and tales of how they found them were told. The presentation was very informative and may have developed a case of “gold fever” among some of our members.

Mystery Rock A guest at our meeting, Jason R., brought in a rock which he hoped could be identified by members of our group. The rock has a good weight to it, is non-magnetic, does not trip a metal detector and appears to have seen much heat at some time. Jason said that he has had some geologists look at it, and there was no consensus as to the origin or type of rock it is. Members present felt that it could be hematite or a meteor.

Below are a few pics. Anybody have any ideas?

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY

PROGRAM PREVEIW The March meeting program time will be taken up by a review and critique of the annual show. Discussion of the attendance, displays, and vendor areas will be the big topic. Come prepared with your impressions of the show and any ideas of how it could be improved.

See you all at the Pewaukee Public Library, March 18, 2020 at 6:30PM

Future Program Alerts Our Program Chair, Carol Ward, has informed us that the April program will be a representative of the

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. He will be speaking about our state park system and the geology of the areas. It sounds like it will be an informative talk, so plan on attending.

NOTE: The April meeting will be held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, April 22, 2020, due to a conflict with library programming.

IT’S SHOWTIME Yes ladies and gentlemen, on Saturday, March 14, 2020 it’s “another opening of another show” to quote the Muppets. This means that Friday, March 13 will be the set-up day at Washington County Fairgrounds in the West Bend Mutual Insurance Pavilion. Starting at 8:00AM we request that members who are able, meet at the Pavilion to help set up tables, apply skirting and set up club displays, such as the fluorescent tree, club history table and such. This set-up should take less than four hours, as the vendors will be starting to set up at 1:00PM. The more people we have on hand to help, the quicker it can be done. Of course there will be coffee and donuts on hand to fuel the operation.

On Saturday and Sunday there will be a need for volunteers to man the ticket sales and other miscellaneous stuff that needs to be done, so if you do not have a display at the show and have not yet signed the volunteer sheet, please consider spending a few hours helping during the show. See John Rettler for details. The good news is, Daylight Saving Time will occur on the week before the show, so no one will lose an hour of sleep during the weekend.

So, let’s make this year’s exposition even better than last year’s. See you all there.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE UPDATE February was a busy month for Mike Andrysczyk and Tony Ilecki. Three programs were presented at Elmdale Elementary School in Greenfield, Wisconsin. The programs on the geology of Wisconsin and the glacier era were given to the fourth grade students on Friday, February 21, Monday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 25. As usual, Make did a great job of educating and entertaining the kids. Tony has been shadowing Mike to get a feel for what the programs are all about and will soon be on the road making his own presentations.

THE LAST WORD The year 2020 is a leap year. That means there was one extra day last month to figure out what to do with. This happens every four years, and the explanation is that we need to reset the calendar with the sun. However, it is interesting to note that leap year always comes in the same year as the presidential election. Coincidence, or a sinister conspiracy? That is for you to decide.

That being said, did you make your extra day into something special? I will say that the extra 24 hours did nothing to help your intrepid editor meet the deadline for the Krier. Drop us a line and let us know how you spent your extra 24 hours.

Thought for the month May the March winds always be at your back and your beer stein be near your hand.

Happy rockhounding!!!

See you all at the Pewaukee Public Library, March 18, 2020 at 6:30PM
