feelings that can swallow us up, and often they are feelings that can keep us stuck unless we turn our lives toward a new direction. Lent helps us to take the steps to get unstuck.

If the first step is turning, the second is receiving forgiveness. When we repent of our sins and confess them to God he forgives. A priest often times pronounces this forgiveness as an assurance of the grace and pardon of God. Sometimes we stop here instead of making the next step, but I want to urge you to not only confess, and receive absolution, but also to walk in the new direction.

This is where penance comes in, it is not a punishment for being stuck in a sin, rather it is the first steps in walking out the new direction of your life. Penance is the trying of the new thing to get and keep your life unstuck. Often times this is serving those in need, or taking up a new prayer, or beginning some other new practice. In lent we often talk about giving something up to point us closer to God. This year take note of the places in your life you feel stuck, places where your life could use a turning toward God, and take a tangible step in that new direction. May you discover the deep freedom of God this Lent.

Upcoming:

The Rt. Rev. Mark

Hollingsworth, Jr.,

visits St. Paul’s on

March 29th.

Have you ever been stuck, I mean really stuck…

In my senior year of high school I was stuck, quite literally. My friends and I decided it would be a good idea to take our trucks out near the Toledo airport, where there were muddy paths and undeveloped land, for us to “off road” our vehicles. In the first hour we had fun, in the second hour we got stuck. We tried and tried but could not get the truck free from the mud. Actually everything we tried made it worse. Then on top of that, we kept trying the same things over and over making the situation worse and worse. It took us five days to get that truck unstuck.

I have found this to be a good metaphor for life when I am stuck and no longer moving forward. I often try the same old things over and over with no success. In times like these the church year offers us a gift of penance. Yeah penance can be a gift not a punishment! It can be a season to break old cycles and start new ones, a season to get unstuck but trying something new.

Penitential seasons, like lent, start with repentance. The imagery that comes with this word that of a person walking on a path, realizing it is not the right path, turning around, and going a different way. In the moment when we realize we are on a wrong path, or realizing the “stuckness” of our lives we often have overwhelming feelings of guilt, sorrow, and remorse. These are

Connecting Communities

We’re excited to announce the St. Paul’s Connecting Communities Team! Hannah Rife, Darcy Young, Roger Hart, Brooke Taylor and Bob Parker. Please offer them your support.

Please keep this group in your prayers as they work towards the growth and vitality of St. Paul’s Fremont. Connecting Community is a group of congregations who commit to one another in a nine-month learning experience. Participating congregations come together for three Saturday workshops and, in the months between them, invite members of their congregations into fun, simple experiential exercises.

Adults learn best by doing and reflecting together. The Saturday workshops and the congregational exercise will hep us do just that. They have been developed and tested in dioceses over several years by Dwight Zscheile, Michael Binder, and the Innovation team at Luther Seminary in Minneapolis.

MINISTRY UPDATE

Please let us know, by the newsletter deadline, if you are not able to serve a ministry role for the following month. Those who already do so, thank you so much. It really helps not

to schedule someone who won’t be available. If the dates have already have been assigned and you can’t make a Sunday, please find someone to fill in for you and let us

know who will be filling in so it can be noted in the bulletin and ministry schedule.
