February's guest speaker was our Vice President Jodie Arklay. Jodie started sewing as a young girl, guided by her mum who was a seamstress with very high standards! On show was toy horse Dallas wearing one of Jodie's early creations. Jodie started quilting in 1996 and has made many quilts, textile works, gifts and clothes - including many outfits for Skinny the Teddy and items for Elliott. One of her first quilts was the wedding quilt for her brother and sister-in-law. She loves challenges, is creative and quirky and definitely thinks outside the square. Jodie won the AQC ELNA Wrapped in Love Challenge in 2005- her quilt had barn doors with animals behind each door. In recent years Jodie has dealt with loss and sadness, physical illness and mental health issues. The Guild members' friendship and support have been a lifeline for her. Jodie is also very talented and determined with our website, IT and artwork, and continues to contribute so much effort behind the scenes. Thankyou Jodie for sharing your story with us, and for your ongoing positive commitment to our Guild. Lisa Hollingsworth.

I am happy to tell you all that after discussion regarding the 2021 Guild exhibition at both the November and February meetings, it has been decided that the duration will remain the same as previous exhibitions and will be held again at the Geelong West Town Hall, with a booking already made. An exhibition committee has been formed and a decision will be made shortly as to what the theme will be, so as to give you all plenty of time to design and work on your masterpieces. At the February meeting there was a suggestion placed in the suggestion box, regarding the gifts given by the Committee at the December meeting. The suggestion was acknowledged by the current Committee and will be passed to the next Committee for their consideration and also for them to decide whether the gift giving which was instigated by the previous and current committees continues.

!! STOP PRESS !! RE: OUR QUILT-IN INCORPORATING THE VIC QUILTERS AUTUMN GATHERING We have been advised that Vic Quilters have cancelled their Autumn Gathering. This is in accordance with the Corona Virus recommendations from the Department of Health. After careful consideration of the current situation regarding the COVID-19 outbreak, the Committee have decided to cancel our March meeting. We will reassess the situation regarding the April meeting based on information and recommendations given by government authorities as they come to hand.

Meanwhile, everyone please keep well, Happy Stitching

Cheryl.

March 2020 Editorial

Sue Palmer [email protected]

I very much enjoyed the first quilts show and tell last month. It was wonderful to see what people had

made, what they had used and how it was all put together. It was also interesting to see the changes

in fabrics, patterns and how people have progressed in their quilting journey. How things have

changed over the last 50 years! My first quilt went to a woman who had lost everything except her

son and her cats in the fires at Buxton several years ago.

I also enjoyed Jodie’s talk for us, it was interesting to hear about her life and quilting, creating

journey. Thank you for sharing with us Jodie.

Thank you also to Lisa who is finishing up the newsletter this month for me as I have to have an

operation and a spell in hospital. The trip David and I had planned to New Zealand this month has

been postponed until August. Then I am hoping Lisa will step into the breech once again.

I am enjoying the cooler weather, it feels as though autumn has come, the nights are drawing in

once again.

Best wishes ,

Sue.

The home page has been updated and our Calendar of speakers for this year looks amazing. We would love to add a few more workshops to our calendar, but we need people to support them and attend.

Please give Cheryl your suggestions, so we can get them happening again.

The next new members afternoon tea is on June 6th at Judy Bubb’s, and anyone is welcome to attend. It’s a great way to connect with new members.

Cheers, Jodie

REQUEST FOR HELP

The Guild has received the following request for help. If anybody is interest in leading a group

to doing this, organising sewing days etc, please see Sue Palmer or Lisa Hollingsworth for

Erica’s contact details.

Hello,

I am the Geelong team leader for Cool the Vollies.

Cool the Vollies is a network of like-minded individuals who are dedicated to show-

ing recognition and appreciation to the volunteers who are providing assistance to people or

wildlife in drought stricken or bushfire ravaged areas. We believe that helpers need helping.

We have already sent thousands of our ties across Australia to organisations such as, BlazeAid,

RFS, Wildcare, SES, Doing it For Our Farmers, The G Spot Canberra, Water our Wildlife, Boots

for Bushies, Book for the Bush and many others.

If there is anybody who may wish to join us in supporting our Vollies by offering to help make

our Cool Ties, we would love to have you come on board with us. Our Cool Ties are handmade

by volunteers for volunteers using 100% cotton and polymer crystals and are completely funded

by the people who are kindly making them to support this cause. We can provide you with the

instructions and a pattern on how these are made if you interested.

Please feel free to message me if you'd like more information or if you'd like to join our initia-

tive.

Thank you

Erica Manser

Subject: Patchwork Quilt commission enquiry

I would like to have a double bed quilt made that has the same design and colour tones of a quilt I already have. I would like to use both quilts in the same room. I am not expecting it to be exactly the same, of course.

Would any of your members be willing to talk to me about my options with the view to taking on a commission? Best regards.

Dorothy. (I live in Anglesea).

Please contact Sue Palmer or Lisa Hollingsworth for Dorothy’s phone number.

Vale Ene Reade

We’re saddened to hear of the passing of Ene Reade on 11th March, one day after

her birthday. Many members will remember Ene as an intelligent, stylish and

creative woman who was interested in everything.

Ene joined the Guild in 2007, she was Secretary in 2014/15, Assistant Secretary in

2015/16, involved in writing procedures for the Guild, was also Guild Historian.

I remember her being kind, wearing gorgeous scarves, and making wonderful

quilts. I remember Ene’s very moving presentation about her mother’s life (and her

own early life), and her showing us many of the treasures her mother had made.

Ene’s son Tom said she loved quilting, hearing news and seeing photos of other

quilts, and loved preparing for the shows.

Our sympathy and best wishes to Ene’s family and friends.

Hello Sue,

Recently I attended St. John of God Oncology Centre for Chemotherapy.

Before my chemo commenced Belinda presented me with a beautiful reversible handmade quilt, see attached photo. I cannot tell you how overwhelmed I was being given such a wonderful gift. I was quite emotional. It has been shown to my visitors and photos sent to all my family and friends.

I would like to thank you so much for the Quilt, it is such a wonderful gesture by you and the members of your Guild. I will certainly treasure it. Once again my sincere thanks for this beautiful gift.

Kind regards, Sheila

To dear Sue

My Mum, Ekaterinia, my brother Steve, and I Jeannie, would love to thank

you and all the beautiful ladies involved in the Quilters Guild for the

beautiful gift you gave her. She absolutely loves the quilt and was deeply

touched by your amazing gesture. It’s angels like you that are sent from

God to put smiles on peoples faces in times of need.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and keep up your amazing work

Kindest regards, Jeanie

FEBRUARY THEME– FIRST QUILTS

Left: Margaret Page with her first quilt.

Margaret backed her quilt with an under blanket.

Working with the Go Cutter.

One example of what you can make with the Accu Go Cutter.

Using these cutters, six and a half inch square, you can make this block , twenty five of these blocks will make

you this quilt below. You can use scraps, or feature a particular fabric the possibilities are endless.

Very Snuggly Quilt Auxiliary Notice — from Marie Lee Due to COVID-19 I will not be hosting any quilt making days during March, April or May. We will re-assess the

situation then and hopefully we will be able to recommence these days.

Of course you want to create quilts at home from your stash, or if you are near the Mornington Peninsula, we

can arrange for you to collect fabric from me.

If you normally get together with a group to make quilts, check with that group as they may be continuing as

normal.

Stay well & take care, Marie Lee

March Library Report

Judy and Pauline

Reviews on books already in a library.

B506 101 Nine Patch Quilts by Marti Michell. Who doesn’t like a nine patch! Never before

have there been so many Nine Patch designs. Just look on Pinterest and the designs are

limitless. Nine Patch quilts are perfect for beginners because Nine Patch blocks are made

with squares and straight line sewing. Learn strip techniques so you don’t have to cut out

each and every individual little square of fabrics. Make quilts in hours, not months or

years! One hundred and one Nine Patch variations are beautifully illustrated in full

colour.

B946 Spectacular Rectangles by Ilene Bartos. 12 Quilts from a simple shape. Here’s a book

of traditional quilting ideas – with a twist. You’ll find Log Cabin blocks, chevrons, stacked

Chinese Coins and more, yet they don’t look like the same old patterns. By focusing on

rectangular blocks, Ilene Bartos has created 12 refreshing designs. Easy enough for

confident beginners, these quilts offer plenty of appeal for advanced quilters as well.

B763 Nickel Quilts by Pat Speth and Charlene Thode. Great designs from 5” scraps.

Discover a sensational system for using your scraps. It’s scrap quiltmaking at its best –

stunning traditional patterns, a rainbow of gorgeous colours, and an all-new approach to

making scrap quilts that sparkle. Start by cutting 5” squares from your stash fabrics. Once

you have your stack of squares, half the work – the cutting – is done! Choose from 20 big,

beautiful patterns that each include directions for 3 different sizes.

B1085 Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charm Quilts by Pam and Nicky Lintott. 17 beautifully

diverse quilting projects show you how to get the most from the latest irresistible

pre-cut fabric bundles.
