Career pathway system or approach: a coordinated approach across a myriad of otherwise disconnected education and training programs/institutions that focuses on the individuals' need for education and training that corresponds to strong career paths in a high-demand industry or occupation.

Career pathway: well-articulated sequence of quality education and training offerings and support services that enable individuals to advance over time to successively higher levels of education and employment in a given industry sector and set of occupations.

In April 2012, the U.S. Departments of Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services issued a joint commitment to:

“promote the use of career pathways approaches as a promising strategy to help adults acquire marketable skills and industry recognized credentials through better alignment of education, training and employment, and human and social services among public agencies and with employers.”
