OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark
Each year we come to the most sacred events of our faith and religion having the opportunity to live it personally, the path to living faith. This requires much more than words and prayers, of tears and sadness, of repentance and reform. It is to enter into what God desires most: an intimate, personal relationship with each of us. Given our human condition we fall short, but renewing intent pleases God for it expresses our honesty, sincerity and integrity the true ways we relate to God. Today’s readings make it easy to place ourselves at these events. We can place ourselves with the crowd saying, “Blessed is the king Who comes in the name of the Lord!” We renew it at every Eucharist if we are truly present. We are also present when Pilate scourges Jesus though finding Him innocent. Fickle and faithless, we join in with “Crucify Him!” There is false and useless security in belonging. Closer to home, we can get personal because we’ve all experienced the fear of Peter when threatened: “I do not know Him.” All his bravado and mouthing of faithful courage vanish at the presence of danger to our well-being. Welcome to the human race! Thank God for compassion. At Peter’s 3rd denial, Jesus turns and looks at him. Peter weeps bitterly. We wonder; was it a look of anger, disapproval, of betrayal or was it a look of loving forgiveness? This prompts tears, not the remorse, fear and despair of Judas! He couldn’t believe he would be forgiven. These are personal choices for each of us. One leads to faith renewed and hope restored. The other leads to death. We cannot comprehend God or what Love Personified is. Yet, if we want to live faith, we can be moved to the depths of our being when we consider God’s love and come to the critical truth of faith, God loves me! This truth removes the fears and insecurities we deal with daily. It affirms my dignity and sacredness, initiates my response: I will take up my cross and follow Jesus. It is not a cross of wood, but one of love. St. Paul (2nd reading) gives perspective: we can’t comprehend God; we can appreciate and respond to a Love Who joins us as one of us, Who brings forgiveness and life after death. When we rejected it and Him, He freely chooses to die to convince us of the Love and the ultimate fulfillment of God’s will for the human family! Believing this makes faith open-ended and unending.

Holy Spirit, look with favor upon our new Holy Father, Pope Francis, as he begins his mission as
Shepherd of the Universal Church.
May he be a holy servant, a strong leader, and a faith-filled guardian of the teachings of
Jesus Christ.
As the Vicar of Christ and successor of St. Peter, may he be filled with zeal for the truth and may his heart be filled with deep compassion
and love for the least ones among us. May he experience your peace and grace in
abundance, as you pour forth upon him your spiritual gifts of wisdom, understanding, wonder and awe,
counsel, knowledge, fortitude and piety.
O Beloved Holy Spirit, bless and watch over our new Pope and, be with him, and us, as we begin
this new journey of faith together.
We ask these things through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.
