A Letter From the Pastor...

Dear Parishioners,

Palm Sunday – today we hear the call of the Church to enter into the Passion of the Lord Jesus. The story of His triumphal entry into Jerusalem reminds us of all the people laying palm branches before Him. It is a glorious entrance that begins the week of solemn celebrations of Jesus’ final days. The TRIDUUM, the Three Days – this is the holiest time of the year for us. The immense joy of Easter is possible because of the self-sacrifice of Jesus on the cross on Good Friday.

During this week we will see Jesus’ giving everything to God for us. We are invited to follow Him by giving all of our lives to God in love and service.

* * * The Little White Books are available at the

entrances of the church. It is a book of reflections for each day of the Easter season, beginning Easter Sunday going through Pentecost (Eastertime). In this way it is similar to the Little Black Book which many have enjoyed using during the Lenten season.

A letter listing the Holy Week Services and Easter Masses was sent to registered households last week. I encourage you to participate in the Holy Week services and Easter Masses and also to invite your family and friends to join you. If you didn’t receive a letter and would like to register as a member of the parish, you may do so online, call the parish office, or fill out one of the registration cards in today’s bulletin and drop it in the collection basket.

This Sunday the Scouts are hosting their annual Pancake Breakfast in Buckley Hall. Please see their article in today’s bulletin for details.

Easter is next weekend. I invite once again your generosity toward St. Edward’s. We build our lives around our faith in Christ and especially in His victory over death. This is our certain hope: that Christ, raised from the dead, will come one day to take all who believe in Him and follow Him to

eternal life in the sight of God. I know you will be as generous as you always are -- in thanksgiving for our beautiful church and the history of those who have gone before us in building it and maintaining it, and most especially in thanksgiving for the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus. Let us come to worship God, come to thank Him for making us His sons and daughters. He gives us His very life, His divine life.

After the Easter masses next weekend we will have a gift for you – a wonderful book called “The Case for Jesus.” The gift is co-sponsored by the parish and the men of our Theology and Cigars discussion group.

Please take one as you leave Easter Mass next weekend and when you are through with it, pass it along to friends and family. Help to spread our faith in the Risen Christ.

Work on the lower church hall continues. Last week, at Hospitality Sunday, many parishioners commented that they liked the painting and color scheme on the walls. The painters also painted the lower narthex and the stairwells leading up to the choir loft. We are also looking into redoing the floor in the hall and ordering new chairs for the room. This is all part of the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. Thank you to all those parishioners who continue to fulfill their pledges, which makes this work possible (tuck-pointing, repair and painting of the sanctuary and upstairs church, renovating the hall, etc.).

God bless you all,

Father Mike

GOOD FRIDAY

Fasting & Abstinence  On Good Friday, fasting & abstinence are observed. Abstinence from meat is required of anyone over the age of 14. Fasting is observed by those between the ages of 18-60, and allows for one full meal. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk & fruit juices are allowed. _________________________________

Reflecting on God’s Word

Someone once told me that people come to church on Palm Sunday because they get something. But I like to think that palm says something they recognize as true. “He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness,” writes Paul, quoting the words of an early Christian hymn. “He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross,” follow soon after (Philippians 2:7, 8). Emptying and humbling are the two key words embracing the trajectory of the life of Jesus Christ, the Son

of God: from incarnation to passion and death. He poured himself out for us and for our salvation, certainly suffering physically—from the beating, the scourging, the crowning with thorns, being struck with a reed, spat upon, prodded, pushed, and stumbling up the hill to Golgotha. Then He was stretched out on a crossbeam, nailed to it, and lifted up, His body suspended between heaven and earth. Finally, He suffocated, unable to raise Himself to take in more air. There was also the inner suffering of abandonment, of seeing His disciples run off, of realizing that all those who had cried “Hosanna” a few days earlier had either been silent or had cried out, “Crucify Him.” Only the women had remained with Him. Today, when we take home a piece of palm, it invites us to prepare to renew our baptismal promises on Easter. Then we can add our voices to that solitary voice almost two millennia ago, saying, “Truly, this is the Son of God!” (Mark 15:39). _____________________________________________________________________

Living God’s Word

Loving God, lift up our hearts to give You thanks and praise for all You have done for us through the saving death of Your Son. We sing out in our day, “Blessed is He who continues to come in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.” _____________________________________________________________________

Tenebrae Tenebrae is Latin for “darkness” and is the name used traditionally for Evening Prayer during the Paschal Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday). This year, we will be celebrating a special service on Wednesday of Holy Week to commemorate our Lord’s entrance into the darkness of his passion and death. Psalms will be chanted, the moving Passion narrative will be read, and the church will slowly get darker as the night carries on. Please join us for this beautiful prayer service.

All are welcome!

Divine Mercy Novena

On Good Friday in 1937, Jesus requested that Sr. Faustina make a special novena before the Feast of Divine Mercy. This year the novena starts on Good Friday,

March 30th and ends on Saturday, April 7th. The pamphlet with the novena will be in the vestibule on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Please take one and make this novena and receive special indulgences. On Sunday, April 8th, Divine Mercy Sunday, there will be a service at 3:00 P.M. which will include the Divine Mercy Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Benediction. If you attend Mass that day and go to confession within that week, you can receive a plenary indulgence by celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday. ________________________________

Eucharistic Adoration

The next day of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is Friday, April 6th, starting right after the 8:15 A.M Mass and ending with Benediction at 7:00 P.M.. The sign up chart will be in the vestibule next weekend. Please plan on making a Holy Hour.

Prioritize your time. Give an hour to the Lord and He will give back more. He can't be outdone in generosity. There is no one more important than Him to spend time with. Come let us give thanks to the Lord for all His gifts to us. _________________________________

Pontifical Good Friday Collection

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Please Be Generous! For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit www.myfranciscan.org/good-friday. _________________________________
