Take Time to Reflect Take some !me and look back over your Lenten journey. Recall this past Lent, star!ng with the beginning and going through all of the ups and downs of trying to keep your resolu!ons. Is yours a story of success, one of failure, or perhaps a mixture of both? What were some of the evident graces during this season for you?

Bring both your successes and failures to the foot of the Cross. Whether or not you were successful, you need Jesus. Jesus’s grace from the Cross is what made any of your successes possible. And if you failed, Jesus isn’t going to withhold any grace from you this week. His mercy extends even into our failures, and one of the gi"s of Lent is to prepare our hearts to receive his love. St. Teresa of Cal-cu#a said that, “God does not require that we be successful, only that we be faithful.”

The start of Holy Week begins with the triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem for Passover. From the beginning, signals were sent by Christ and his disciples that this entrance and week were not one that could be ignored. The Gospels reveal that Christ challenges those in authority and asserts his own claim to it for all to see. Palm or Passion Sunday sets into ac!on a series of events that realize the Final Covenant of God and His people. It is this week that brings God’s Redemp!ve Plan to frui!on.

Palm Sunday begins with Jesus ordering a few of his disciples to precede him into the city to secure a donkey for his triumphal entrance and a place in which to celebrate the Passover. To Jews of his !me, this is significant because Christ will ride the donkey into the city imita!ng Solomon’s entrance for anointment and installa!on as king. It was customary for all people to walk into the city. Riding into the city on a donkey signifies Jesus’ claim to regal ancestry and a victorious, peaceful triumph. In addi!on, the people’s act of laying down cloaks and their waving of palms were acts of acknowledgment of Christ’s claim to the Davidic throne. In addi!on, their cries of “Hosanna”, meaning “save us”, reverberated throughout the city that was overflowing with visi!ng pilgrims. To Temple authori!es and Roman sympathizers, this cry and this ac!on would be viewed as a growing insurrec!on, challenging the authority of Rome and their sympathizers. To all present, Jesus could undermine the establishment. If the authori!es were to maintain their control, they were obligated to seize Jesus and silence him, permanently. In any event, all ac!ons from this point were done to fulfill all prophecies and to counteract the ac!ons of sinners with a New Covenant that would bring

jus!fica!on and righteousness to all who would accept it.

This “New Covenant” is what Chris!ans celebrate today. The nomenclature reflec!ng this covenant and special !me is known as the Easter Triduum. This feast takes place over three days, embracing Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday (Mass of the Resurrec!on of the Lord). Although

these events occur over three separate day (coun!ng to Sunday from evening to evening), they, nonetheless, are viewed as a singular feast in Chris!anity – Christ’s Paschal Mystery. It is important to recognize the great Divine gi" given to us over this period of !me as God’s Redemp!ve Plan is fulfilled – leading to the

Resurrec!on of Our Lord and the establishment of the New Israel. For Chris!ans, God’s Kingdom is at hand!

This en!re week is a panorama of Salva!on History and the Divine Plan. By studying closely each day and unlocking the mysteries of Jesus’ ac!ons, the revela!on of God’s love for mankind is revealed. From rejoicing with cries for rescue on Palm Sunday to shouts of hate and scorn heard on Good Friday, the fickleness of mankind is shown for what it really is. Yet, during this three-day Liturgy, Divine Will triumphs and the bride and the groom are united, once again, in a never-ending love story. The love of Christ, the Groom, in the end draws all things to Himself. Once again, and in every age, cries of “Hosanna” or “Save us” are shouted as Jesus of Nazareth enters the New Jerusalem and conquers all – even death. It is no surprise that this one week of the year is called “Holy Week” because all are transformed by His love. Deacon Rob
