THIS WEEKEND – MARCH 28-29 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD
3 St. Martha Church
When I was a kid, I would
often roll my eyes at the
beginning of Palm Sunday –
“ug. . .the LONG one” I would
think, but then as we would
stand and read the passion, I
would enter into it more and
more. My younger self knew,
somehow, that it was good to
play a part in the passion – for
Jesus played a part in this world
for me. Sadly, somehow, I
knew too that my part was one
that involved saying, “crucify
him.”
I used to think that if only I
could travel back in time and
bring a PA system and a large
set of speakers that I could
over-shout those calling for
Barabbas – and save Jesus. If
only more people who loved
Christ would have banded
together, I thought, maybe the
story would be different; it
would be.
We are not meant to walk
thru life alone – in faith, in
work, in joy, in sorrow – none of
it. We were meant to come
together. To journey together.
Jesus shows us this when –
facing the trial of his Agony in
the Garden, he reaches out to
Peter, James, and John – asking
them to join him for support.
The Desert Fathers write, “A
brother was restless in his
community and he was often
irritated. So he said, ‘I will go
and live somewhere by myself.
I will not be able to talk or listen
to anyone and so I shall be at
peace, and my passionate
anger will cease.’ He went out
and lived alone in a cave.
But one day he filled his jug
with water and put it on the
ground – suddenly it happened
to fall over. He filled it again,
and again it fell. This happened
a third time. In a rage he
snatched up the jug and
smashed it. Coming to his
senses, he knew that the
demon of anger had mocked
him, and he said, ‘Here I am by
myself, and he has beaten me.
I will return to the community.
Wherever you live, you need
effort and patience and above
all God’s help.’ So he got up,
and went back.”
C. S. Lewis writes, “Jesus
works on us in all sorts of ways.
. .through Nature, through our
own bodies, through books,
sometimes through
experiences. . .But above all, He
works on us through each
other.
Men and Women are
mirrors or “carriers” of Christ to
other men and women.
Sometimes unconscious
carriers” (Mere Christianity).
May we have a truly Holy
Week by consciously coming
together with God and each
other this week.
In Christ,
TOGETHER

“The Church cannot behave like a business that changes its product when the demand for it decreases.” - Karl Cardinal Lehmann Faith at Home: Plant a “Mary Garden” this year! Go to http://campus.udayton.edu/mary/ resources/m_garden/overview.html for ideas on plants to include and what they symbolize. Start some plants indoors so you can watch as the seed “dies” and gives “new life” when the plant pushes up through the soil. As you watch the plants grow, remember to pray for all farm-ers. Saint Isidore the Farmer, pray for us! Grades 4 & 5 put together Stations of the Cross for their classroom. They walked with Jesus on His way to Calvary as they prayed through the Stations. “We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your holy Cross You have re-deemed the world.” - Saint Francis of Assisi Grade 7: Remaining Thursday sessions for this school year are April 16, May 7, and June 4. On Saturday, May 16 there will be a Day of Reflec-tion for all 7th graders from 9am to 12 noon. Grade 8: Remaining Thursday sessions for this school year are April 30 and May 28. The Con-firmation Retreat, required for all who will be making their Confirmation in 2015, is Saturday, June 6, from 9am to 6pm. This includes the 5pm parish Mass. Parent volunteers are needed for set-up and clean-up of morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack. Volunteers are also needed to supply the morning and afternoon snacks. Letters to Father Dave are due by April 30, and the Service Reflection will be due on May 28th.
All High School Youth Are Welcome!! 732-295-3630 ext. 31
After school on Wednesday, April 1, we could sure use some help. We would like to have some students help set up the parish hall for our Easter Masses.
Also, on Holy Saturday morning, April 4, at 9:00 am, we could really use some help setting up the church flowers for Easter. This would in-clude unloading the Easter flowers from the de-livery truck and carrying them to the altar. Our older people would really appreciate the help of some strong young people in this matter.
Please call or email me with any questions.
JUNIOR LECTOR PROGRAM The Parish Community would love to start a
Junior Lector Program. If you are a young man or woman of High School age - and have made your Confirmation - we ask you to con-sider joining the Lector Ministry at Saint Mar-tha's.
High school lectors would proclaim the se-cond reading at a mass of their choice, which is a great way to get more out of mass and looks great on a college application.
Application forms are available near the doors of the church. Please complete and bring to the parish office. Training will be offered on Saturday, April 25th from 10 am to 11:30 am. For more information, please contact Deacon Ted Kotz at [email protected] or 732-899-2231.
NEW ALTAR SERVER TRAINING The Parish Community needs your help. If you are a boy or girl in the 4th through 8th grade, we ask for you to consider joining the ministry of Altar Server at Saint Martha's. Training will be offered on Saturday, April 18th from 9 AM to 11:30 AM. For more information, please contact Deacon Ted Kotz at [email protected] or 732-899-2231.
