Slow Changes to the land

Weathering

• Process of rocks breaking down into smaller pieces, such as pebbles and then sand

• Causes of weathering– Wind– Water– Plants

Slow Change: Weathering

• Weathering changes Earth’s surface– cracking, crumbling, and breaking rocks

• Weathering is a slow process; It’s hard to see, and may take years.

• Rushing waters on beaches, winds, and growing plant roots can weather rocks.

• Changing temperatures and chemicals can weather rocks. Chemicals consist of air, water, and everything around you.– A cave forms when water runs through cracks in the limestone.

Chemicals in the water soften the limestone. Small openings form when the water washes away the weathered rocks.

Slow Change: Erosion

• Erosion occurs when weathered materials are carried away.

• Water, gravity, and wind can cause erosion.

• A glacier -- a huge piece of moving ice -- can also cause erosion. Gravity can move a glacier from a high land to a low land. It can move rocks and other things in its path.

Slow Change: People

• People cause changes in the Earth’s surface. These changes include eliminating forests and draining wetlands to free more land up for building homes. Cutting into mountains or hills to build roads is another change. The changes to the Earth’s surface need to be planned carefully to protect the environment.

Fast Change: Hurricane

• A hurricane is a large, violent storm with strong winds and heavy rains. Hurricanes can destroy and damage many things. They form over oceans. A tornado is a small, powerful windstorm which looks like a giant funnel.

Fast Change: Floods

• Big storms dump heavy rain on the land. Then the rainwater runs into rivers. If the rivers can’t hold all the water, they overflow their banks and cause a flood.

• Floods leave soil and sand

• Leave rich soil on fields…good for growing crops

Fast Change: Tornado

• Tornadoes appear in wide, flat areas. Tornado winds swirl very fast and they are capable of destroying buildings. A flood is an overflow of water over land. Floods carry away rocks and soil, and destroy plants, and buildings.

Fast Change: Earthquake

• An earthquake is a sudden movement of rocks that make up the Earth’s crusts. Earthquakes start below the surface and shake the ground above. Strong earthquakes cause damage to buildings and roads. Earthquakes can cause landslides, as well. They come from loosened rocks on mountains, melting snow or heavy rains.

Fast Change: Volcano

• A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s surface. An eruption occurs when rocks, gases, and dust come out of the volcano. Lava is melted rock that comes from the volcano or a fissure in the ground.

• ash cloud - an ash cloud is the cloud of ash that forms in the air after some volcanic eruptions

• conduit - a conduit is a passage through which magma (molten rock) flows in a volcano.

• crust - the crust is Earth's outermost, rocky layer. • lava - lava is molten rock; it usually comes out of

erupting volcanoes.• magma chamber - a magma chamber contains magma

(molten rock) deep within the Earth's crust. • side vent - a side vent is a vent in the side of a volcano. • vent - a vent is an opening in the Earth's surface through

which volcanic materials erupt.
