Contrary to what is often believed: in sin we lose ourselves. This is a truth opposite what is often said or implied by the worldly and well-meaning. In sin, it’s often said, we find ourselves, discover who we “really” are, what we like to call our “identity.” So often we make sin the substance of who we are, because, of course, pride’s underneath it. It is the world’s trick, its false glamour. Scripture, however, says exactly the opposite. In sin and by sin, we lose ourselves; we don’t find ourselves. By sin we lose our very being. It is what the prodigal son is getting at when he says to his father, “I no longer deserve to be called your son” (Lk. 15:21). He realized what he’d lost by sin, and that’s his very self. It’s why his coming home, his repentance, was such a desperate act—because it was a question of life or death, existence or non-existence. Which highlight’s the power of God’s mercy. By the father’s mercy not only was the son forgiven, he was given his life back. He wasn’t a son; he had lost his identity, his being. Yet by the father’s mercy, he became a son again; he was reborn. Here we see the moral point of the resurrection. Here we see what Paul meant when he wrote, “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation” (2 Cor. 5:17). It is what’s on oPer in the Gospel: the redemption of the self, contrary to the idolatry of self. One leads to genuine personal fulfillment, the other to emptiness. It is the choice of our age that’s to be made. This is the deeper invitation of Christianity. It’s yours if you want it. You just need to believe God instead of the world, even instead of yourself.

Have a blessed week! Praying for you!

pax,

Fr. Joshua

LENT GUIDELINESLENT GUIDELINESLENT GUIDELINESLENT GUIDELINES The annual observance of Lent is the special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Through its twofold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes both the catechumens and the faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. Catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the Rite of Election, the Scrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew their baptismal promises. (Ceremonial of Bishops, 249). FastingFastingFastingFasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and

older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, suZcient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.

AbstinenceAbstinenceAbstinenceAbstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously aPected, the law does not oblige.

Ash Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019 and Good FridayGood FridayGood FridayGood Friday, April 19, 2019 are days of fast and abstinence. All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.
