The gospel for the 1st Sunday of Lent is “The Temptations in the Desert” (Matthew 4:1-11). Please notice that the gospel emphasizes that Jesus “was led by the Spirit.” And after 40 days he was tempted by the devil.
The desert is an image of Lent. The desert is a place of challenge and testing. The desert is a place of transformation. Every year we are invited to journey into and through this desert to meet the resurrected Christ at Easter. Alessandro Pronzato, in his book Meditations on the Sand, suggests the reason we go into the desert each year.
One goes to the desert to see more and to see better. One goes to the desert especially to take a closer look at the things and people one would rather not see, to face situations one would rather avoid, to answer questions one would rather forget.
Steve Garnaas-Holmes suggests that we go into the desert to become monotaskers. We imitate Jesus who responded to each of his temptations by deepening his attention to God. Jesus practiced monotasking, so that all he was ever doing was being attentive to God, loving and serving God. Andrew King, in his poem Desert Lesson, points out how Jesus’ response to his temptations in the desert gives us a template for renewing and deepening our baptismal identity, commitment and mission this Lent. He will not bid the stones
turn to bread today to ease his pressing hunger: for the hungry and poor of the world cannot, and he is in the world to bear their burden.
He will not evade frail humanness today, or deny his utter mortality, for even the mighty
of the world cannot, and he is in the world to bear their burden.
He will not seek the throne of a kingdom today, selfish wealth or glory: for the outcasts and hurting of the world cannot, and he is in the world to bear their burden.
Through our praying, fasting and almsgiving may we grow in our awareness, love and service of the Lord who comes to us in the poor, the hungry, the stranger and the needy all around us.

YOUNG ADULT
During Lent, we ask the Parish Community of St. Ignatius to join the RCIA Team, Godparents and sponsors to pray for our Catechumens and Candidates. They are in the final stages of their preparation to join our parish community at Easter Vigil; by receiving the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
PRAYER FOR THE ELECT O God, we come to you, asking you to bless those
in our community who have entered the Period of Election.
Bless them, and all those in parishes everywhere who have begun this special time of grace.
O God, we ask you to help them that they may find what they seek. Instill in these elect patience and perseverance in their
journey of faith.
Enlighten their minds and open their hearts to you. Keep those who come to You, O Lord, in your loving care. Watch over them as they draw closer to You.
Surround them with people who care and are willing to support them in their journey of faith. We place all of them in the
shelter of your love as they prepare to meet you in new ways, O God. Amen
Catechumens Chris Bridges, Thuy Do, Richard Heltzel, Shirley Moore,
Kelly Pham, Darla Robinson, Carly Smith, Shelly Smith, and Amanda Yao
Candidates Mark Magana, Sarah Pecota, Amy Phipps, Brent Phipps, Valentina Rojas, Joanna Taron and Jennifer Zimmerman
