March 7, 2021 2 SAINT BERNARD

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we encounter Jesus in cleaning mode. Entering the Temple, he sees people buying and selling livestock and exchanging money and gets very upset. Now, this isn’t the first time Jesus has seen this in the Temple. He has gone to the Temple countless times and has probably seen these folks before. But today he chooses to act. In order to understand why Jesus became so angry, we need to learn a little more about the Temple in Jerusalem. The Temple was God’s dwelling place, where the faithful encounter God’s presence and mercy. This was a very sacred place. It was the only place where sacrifices could be offered. During the time of Jesus, animal sacrifice was a part of the Jewish tradition, and was a way to offer worship to God. The moneychangers and livestock sellers were there so that people from far away could make an offering, without having to travel with livestock. Traditionally, buying oxen and sheep and exchanging money were done outside the Temple, but over time, the practice entered the Temple itself, perhaps for convenience. Gradually then, the house of God became a marketplace. Instead of a place of encounter with the holy, it had been reduced to a place of business. If you pay this price, you can get this service. This can have a disastrous effect on faith. Jesus, angered by his practice, finally decides to act. Jesus overturns the moneychanger’s tables and drives out the livestock. This action would have angered many of the religious leaders. It probably garnered a lot of gossip about who Jesus was. Sometimes we make concessions in the light of convenience and we stray farther away from the beautiful truths of our faith. We opt for easy, when the hard way is the right way. Lent is a great time to examine and question our choices. Perhaps our intentions are good, but without actions that support what we know is right, we are not doing good. By turning away from what is wrong without trying to correct it, we are moving farther away from God. We could also be leading others away from God because we are not showing them God’s love. We need Jesus in our lives to overturn the areas where we have lost our way. We need to do what is right and good, just as Jesus did. Today’s Gospel passage helps us to see that indifference is a danger to our faith. When we ignore the little things, we are giving them permission to build up and become something that gets in the way of our encounter with God. In cleansing the Temple, Jesus shows us that we need to see past the things that hold us back from acting on our faith. We need to clean up our lives so that we can see God more clearly. Jesus can help us overcome these obstacles that separate us from a loving relationship with him.

Confirmation Candidates “Works of Mercy” This Lenten season, the 2021 Confirmation candidates of St. Bernard Church will be doing their “Works of Mercy” project in support of the non-profit organization “Sole.” The organization consists of two NYC high

school students who refurbish sneakers for homeless people in our city, including 18, 368 homeless children. Many of their recipients do not have clean socks or even a pair of their own shoes. Through the kindness and creativity of these two high school students, 2416 pairs of refurbished sneakers have been

gifted to people in need since November of 2020. Please consider donating to our Confirmation candidates’ 2021 Works of Mercy fund, which directly supports our New York City community.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT “You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” - Exodus 20:4 How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health. Pray for God’s help to prune our vices and to grow in virtue.

Celebration Of Mass

♦ Masks must be worn in Church.

♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet)

♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church.

♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people).

♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other.

♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctuary on either side of the altar and in the back of church by the double doors. You may put all your first and second collection enve-lopes and offerings in any of the baskets.

♦ There is not to be any gathering in the vestibule before or after Mass.

♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any questions or con-cerns.

♦ The Church will be sanitized twice a week, on Friday and Monday, before and after weekend Masses. Receiving Communion

♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and consume the Eucharist and replace their mask.

♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distributed.

♦ Parishioners will come for Communion observing at least 6 feet of distance between them as they approach. The floor has markings on it.

♦ IT IS VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARISH-IONERS RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND. This is for the safety of the parishioner receiving Holy Commun-ion and the minister of Holy Communion. If a parishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Communion line so they are the last ones re-ceiving so that the Communion ministers can disinfect their hands if need be after each person receives.

St. Joseph Novena following the 8:30 a.m. mass.

If you would like to memorialize flowers for a loved one during any of the weeks of this novena please come to the rectory for more information.
