External Sacrifice:

So why exactly are you not eating candy for the next month?

This is a very popular penance during Lent, and the questions about it are just as popular. Heaven forbid you should avoid the cake at the birthday party! You LOVE cake! But it’s Lent – a time for penance and sacrifice. Christ has said, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Giving up something we enjoy strengthens our love for Christ and our resilience against temptation. As Pope Benedict XVI said in his Lenten address of 2009, “Through fasting and praying, we allow [Christ] to come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we experience in the depths of our being: the hunger and thirst for God.” It unites us with Christ’s own sacrifices and gives us a deeper appreciation of the blessings in our lives.

MARDI GRAS 2020 WRAP UPWith the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the generosity of many, many people, Mardi Gras 2020 was a huge success. Numbers increased in all areas--number of dinner tickets sold, number of baskets for the bucket raffles, number of children’s games, number of times the 50-50 paddles were played--what a beautiful day for all.Special thanksto those who provided complimentary dinners to 20 of our shut-ins (they were extremely appreciative and so glad to be remembered) and to those the drivers (Denise, Cookie/Dick, Janis/LeRoy, Ken, Bob, and Ralph) who made the deliveries! The final results were: Income ($14,338), Expenses ($4,055.38), Net Profit ($10,282.62). It just goes to show that, with guidance from the Holy Spirit and positive action by the part of so many, the sky is the limit! Like was mentioned in last week’s bulletin, records were broken in 2020. Let’s keep the momentum going for Mardi Gras 2021. God Bless You All.

Mass with Anointing of the Sick

At Holy Spirit church on Thursday, March 26 at 12:10 PMWhen illness confronts a person, it can also lead to their feeling alone. A person might even feel as though they have been abandoned by God as they deal with the reality of the sickness and the changes it might bring to their life and their family. God understands this reality in the human condition. When Jesus ministered on earth He spent a great deal of his time healing the sick. Christ used these miracles to draw people to greater faith. Christ continues this work in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. In this sacrament a person is given the pledge of Christ’s continued presence in the midst of their suffering and pain. While the priest prays for the physical healing of the person, the grace of the sacrament goes beyond physical healing to strengthen the soul and preserve the person from despair through an outpouring of hope. It is a sacrament that is meant to bring us strength and support in the midst of an illness, not simply at the end of life. As such, it is a mistake to view this sacrament as a "last sacrament," as it has been called in the past. It is a sacrament that nearly everyone will experience several times in the course of their lives. More information will follow.

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,Understanding the Mass

Sunday, the Day of the Lord

Sunday is the original festival, the weekly celebration of Christ’s holy resurrection. Sunday is the day of the Eucharist, the day of the Church’s joy, the day of beginning again in the grace of Him who says, “Behold, I make all things new” (Rev 21:5). The festivity of Sunday worship overflows into all of life. There is delight in the details: freshly polished shoes, “Sunday best” clothes, flowers and wine for the Sunday dinner table. Allowing Sunday Mass to become one thing among others on a weekend checklist leads to a loss of “Eucharistic amazement.” Holy Mass is Sunday’s central event. All other things are arranged around it. The absolute priority given to Sunday Mass is an irreplaceable witness to the Kingdom God. The beauty of Sunday Mass is an offering to God and a healing for the soul. The singing of priest, deacon, cantor, and people, the use of incense and lights, the sacred movement of bodies in worship, vesture in the appointed liturgical colors, the clear sound of the bell, the flowers that delight the eye and perfume the air — all these good things proclaim the splendor of the Mystery of Faith, each in its own way. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church2177. The Sunday celebration of the Lord's Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church's life. "Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church." 2179."A parish is a definite community of the Christian faithful established on a stable basis within a particular church; the pastoral care of the parish is entrusted to a pastor as its own shepherd under the authority of the diocesan bishop." It is the place where all the faithful can be gathered together for the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. The parish initiates the Christian people into the ordinary expression of the liturgical life: it gathers them together in this celebration; it teaches Christ's saving doctrine; it practices the charity of the Lord in good works and brotherly love:You cannot pray at home as at church, where there is a great multitude, where exclamations are cried out to God as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, the prayers of the priests. God Bless. With love and prayers,Fr. Abraham MCBS
