Sports trophies and the Queen Competition plaque binder

In 2018, a decision was made to do “something” with regards to Solglyt Lodge’s six sports trophies and the Queen Competition plaque. None of the trophies nor the Queen Competition plaque were being used anymore and they were only taking up valuable space in the Sons of Norway storage room at the Dutch Canadian Centre (DCC). It was agreed to discard the built structure of the trophies but to retain the bronze plaques on which the names of the winners were engraved. Wayne Nordstrom, a member of Solglyt Lodge, volunteered to create a binder that would contain all the bronze plaques as well as a description and photograph of each trophy. A few suitable photographs of trophy win-ners would also be included. Once completed, the “trophy ring-binder” can be used as a display item at regular lodge meetings or at other lodge events. When not on display, it will be kept in the storage room at the DCC.

If lodge members would like to add some of their photos to the binder, please contact Wayne at [email protected].

    Introducing RAM’s first feature exhibition

Vikings: Beyond the LegendApril 18 – October 20, 2019Row a Viking ship, wield a sword and feed your curiosity for the explorers, traders, farmers and artisans who changed the course of history. Vikings: Beyond the Legend is the largest touring exhibition of Viking artifacts in the world.

It’s an immersive experience like no other with 650 artifacts that range from exotic jewels to three Viking warships, including the 37-metre Roskilde 6 – the longest Viking warship ever found, featuring approximately 1,000 year-old wooden planks and metal supports showing the ship’s original lines. Striking multimedia shows and 11 interactive stations bring this historic exhibition to life.

For more information, visit our website royalalbertamuseum.ca or browse the #yegvikings hashtag on social media.

Vikings: Beyond the Legend is on loan from the National Museum of Denmark. The exhibition is a joint venture between and produced by The National Museum of Denmark and MuseumsPartner in Austria.

Dates to RememberThere are several events coming up in the next couple of months so please mark your calendars:

    1. Meals on Wheels – Once again we will be volunteering at Meals on Wheel on Monday, March 18th, 2019 at 8:30 in the morning. I still need four to five people to volunteer and would appreciate your con-tacting me at [email protected] or at 780-436-7286 to let me know if you can help. If you have not had the opportunity to see how this organization works, this is your time. It is mind boggling the number of meals prepared by them and their efficiency in doing so.2. Royal Alberta Museum to take in The Vikings are Coming exhibition.

I have tentatively booked Thursday May 9th for a tour for 15 people but more can be added. Save this date as I think this should be a very interesting tour. Once I have heard from the Museum, I will provide more details.3. Sports Weekend in Meota, Saskatchewan June 7th, 8th and 9th. Meota is 25 kilomters from North Battleford. Once we have details I will provide them to you. This is always a fun event with an opportunity for Lodges in Zone 4 to get together and exchange ideas. So plan to attend

a little in English...Researchers Find Large Amounts of Coins, Hairpins and Pearls Under the Floors of Old Churches

Small treasures tell a dark story about Norway’s medieval culture

Archaeologists have found more than 20,000 coins, beads and hairpins under the floorboards of old Norwegian stave churches. A total of 10,286 of the coins are from between 1180 and 1320 A.D. In the Middle Ages, there were likely thousands of stave churches in Norway. Today, 28 stave churches remain standing. In addition, Norway probably has a few hundred other churches with roots in the Middle Ages. The coin findings in these churches reveal how widely coins were being used in Norwegian settlements 800 years ago.

    One gender on either side

In the Middle Ages people stood during church. Only the old and infirm got to sit on benches along the sides. Presumably there was also a clear division between the sexes. Women stood on the north side of the sanctuary and men on the south side.

“When we investigated where in the church rooms hairpins, beads and other objects associated with women were located under the floorboards, we found that more than 95 percent were below the north side of the sanctuary,” says Svein Harald Gullbekk, an archaeology researcher at the University of Oslo.

Thus, Gullbekk confirmed the strict division of medieval churches, where women had to stand on the side that people connected with the dark and cold forces in nature. The men stood on the south side.

I middelalderen fantes det antakelig over tusen stavkirker i Norge.

I middelalderen sto folk oppreist i kirken.
