Services and Music List
March and April 2018
WELCOME Much of our attention, both in Church and in the world, is given to what is extraordinary; to
anything which is unusual or which stands out. The daily round of prayer and praise at the
Cathedral reminds us that our access to God, and our privilege to begin and end each day
begun and ended in God – is far from ordinary. The gold of word and sacrament is
supported here at Wells through sensitively chosen and performed music, which for many, is
the very ‘language of God.’ It enables us to reflect our world and its triumphs and
tribulations back to God creatively and so to experience our share in the divine life.
We hope very much that you will join us when you can.
The Reverend Canon Nicholas Jepson-Biddle, Precentor
Communicant members of other churches in good standing are welcome to receive the Sacrament in

MAJOR NEW RELEASE FROM
WELLS CATHEDRAL CHOIR
In celebration of John Joubert’s 90th birthday year, Wells Cathedral Choir presents a
recording of recent choral works from this prolific veteran composer. Featuring
works commissioned for and first performed by the cathedral choir at Wells, this
programme has at its heart the extended St Mark Passion, a profound and heartfelt
retelling of the well-known passion story. Completing the album are the expansive
Missa Wellensis and Joubert’s powerful setting of Locus iste.
Peter Auty (tenor), Benjamin Bevan (baritone), Richard May (cello),
David Bednall (organ), Wells Cathedral Choir, Matthew Owens (conductor)
This is an outstanding disc… the singing of Wells Cathedral Choir exceptional…
Owens conjures from his choir beautifully shaped, expressive phrasing requiring
masterly breath control that is staggering… There is not a weak link anywhere in
these performances…’ (Choir & Organ, November 2017 – Star Review)

Boys have sung in Wells Cathedral for over 1100 years; girls began in 1994. Day by day, 18 boys and 18 girls sing in their own treble lines with the men – the 12 Vicars Choral. T ey often come together for major feast days, concerts, tours, and other special events to perform as T e Great Choir.
T e Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust has been providing bursaries to support choristers’ education since 2000, recognizing that singing in a cathedral choir is the best foundation for children with musical gifts. Professional performers and composers from all branches of classical and popular music acknowledge their debt to the early routine of daily singing to the highest standards. Britain’s reputation as a musical nation is, in no small part, due to this great choral tradition and the formative experience it gives to talented youngsters.
With the support of its Royal Patron, HRH T e Countess of Wessex, the Trust is determined that no child with musical talent should miss out on these opportunities for f nancial reasons. T e Trust’s aim is to raise enough money to fund all thirty-six choristers. T is is some way of , and it needs your support for our appeal to help us reach this goal.
T e Trust’s website has more information and provides an opportunity to make a donation. Please visit it as soon as you can: www.wcct.co.uk
