PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Brothers and Sisters, This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. As we hear the story of the

beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, we bring to a close the Season of Christmas and begin Ordinary Time. Matthew’s Gospel recounts the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River and during that baptism a voice from the heavens proclaims Jesus as the Beloved Son. The Spirit of God came to rest upon Him. Likewise, my brothers and sisters, you and I have been baptized into being children of God. The Spirit came upon us through the saving act of the sacrament and we, too, have been commissioned to proclaim the Kingdom of God. You and I are beloved by the Father! You and I are called upon to witness the glory of God in our daily lives. Throughout 34 weeks of Ordinary Time (interrupted by Lent and Easter) we are called upon to light to the nations, the hands and feet of the Risen Christ, heirs to the Kingdom of God. It’s in the daily struggle of life that we will grow in holiness. We need each other during these times, and it is for that reason we gather week after week to be strengthened with the Lord in Eucharist. His baptism is our baptism, His dying is our dying and His resurrection is our resurrection. So intimately is our life one with Christ! This is something we can never forget and are called to live out every day of our life.

We have some exciting ways to live out our faith coming up. I’d like to highlight a couple today so that you can begin to make plans. Our parish community is comprised of many nations and cultures – a true blessing. Each of the cultures celebrate a tradition that has been brought from the “old country.” We celebrate Fiesta Guadalupa and the Filipino Simbang Gabi in December. Our first celebration of the new year is our annual Tết Vietnamese New Year Celebration which will begin with the 5:15pm Saturday evening Mass on February 1, 2020. Technically, "Tết" is a shortened form of Tết Nguyên Đán, a way to say “Lunar New Year” in Vietnamese. Tết is seen as a chance for a fresh start. Debts are settled, old grievances are forgiven, and houses are cleaned of clutter — all to set the stage for attracting as much luck and good fortune as possible in the upcoming year. I hope that you will come and join us for our bilingual Mass celebration praying for a new year of blessings and peace followed by an evening of Vietnamese traditions to celebrate Tết.

This year, Mardi Gras will fall on Tuesday, February 25th. The entire parish is invited to our Whole Community Event! Join us for a Fat Tuesday parade on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 that begins at 6:00 p.m. DECORATE YOUR STROLLERS AND WAGONS as we are led by the Grand Marshall. Activities will include games, food, and door prizes.

St. Joseph’s Day is a traditional Sicilian/Italian feast day in honor of Saint Joseph, for preventing a famine during the Middle Ages. God through the intercessions of Saint Joseph saved the Sicilians from a severe drought. Continuing the Sicilian/Italian tradition, we also invite our parish family to share in the annual feast of “La Festa di Tavola di San Giuseppe”. Join us in Christus Center on Saturday, March 21, 2020 after the 5:15 pm vigil mass for this special gathering. The evening will begin with the Rite of Blessing of the Saint Joseph’s Altar, which is comprised of three tiers symbolizing the Most Holy Trinity, continued with a program of music and a reenactment of Holy Family’s search for food and shelter. The altar will be laden with a banquet of many kinds of foods. In addition, the tiers will be filled with flowers, candles, figurines, symbolic breads, special pastries and many other traditional items.

Something new this year to consider is a pilgrimage/journey of European churches. Our own parish choir will be singing, under the direction of Chris Bearer, the Director of Music, in the Cathedral of Salzburg, the Cathedral of Linz in Austria, St. Peter’s Church in Vienna, the Cathedral in Lugano, Italy (just outside of Milan) and the Milano Duomo! There’s a lot of free time for non-choir members so you have the opportunity to visit these picture book beautiful cities. Then, there is an optional add-on to attend the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany. In 1633, the residents of Oberammergau, Germany, vowed that if God spared them from the bubonic plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play thereafter for all time every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus. The production involves over 2,000 performers, musicians and stage technicians, all residents of the village. The play comprises spoken dramatic text, musical and choral accompaniment and tableaux vivants, which are scenes from the Old Testament depicted for the audience by motionless actors accompanied by verbal description. 2020 marks the time for the play, the next of which, won’t happen until 2030! For more information, see our website’s homepage.

With prayers for the new year!

THIS WEEK’S READINGS THIS WEEK’S READING

Sunday, Jan 12, 2020 FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Farewell to the hidden life Part of our life belongs to us in a private way. The rest is lived in the public eye at school, work, church, or in the communi-ty. Even if you’re not a celebrity, the private part of who you are is shrinking fast, as more of what we do becomes common knowledge and on the record. Jesus, too, had his hidden years, those first three decades we know little about. At his Baptism by John, heaven claimed him and put his identity on the rec-ord. His hidden days were over. After our Baptisms, our choices are on the record too.

TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7; Acts 10:34-38; Matthew 3:13-17 (21). “I formed you, and set you as . . . a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind.”

Monday, Jan 13, 2020 MEMORIAL OF HILARY, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Let the truth be known Much like our own times, in the early centuries of the church, many competing ideas circulated about what Christians should believe, including Arianism, which said that God the Father and God the Son were not one. But because of clear-thinking, Spirit-filled people like Saint Hilary, a bishop and later-named doctor of the church, truth prevailed. Truth seems to be tak-ing quite a beating in our own time, so pray for guidance and wisdom and the intercession of Hilary—and like him, stand up for what you know to be true.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Samuel 1:1-8; Mark 1:14-20 (305). “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Tuesday, Jan 14, 2020 Choose holiness It’s fun to see the kids dressed up as little red devils at Hallow-een or to scream with our friends at horror movies. Yet, it is difficult and painful to address the reality of evil in the world. How do we contend with this? Pope Francis in his apostolic exhortation et exsultate (On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World) writes, “We should not think of the devil as a myth, a repre-sentation, a symbol, a figure of speech, or an idea. . . . The devil does not need to possess us. He poisons us with the venom of hatred, desolation, envy, and vice.” Spend time with God and ask for help in examining your own heart, in rebuk-ing that which is not of God, and in nurturing all that is of God.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Samuel 1:9-20; Mark 1:21-28 (306). “Jesus commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”

Wednesday, Jan 15, 2020 Find the perfect word Imagine having the eloquence and foresight that no word you spoke was without truth. That was God's gift to Samuel in the Old Testament and to many prophets that followed, including Saint Marcarius, whose feast day is today. Saint Marcarius was a fourth-century desert monk celebrated for his prophecies

and healing powers. Finding the right words does not come easy for most of us. But if we allow ourselves to be guided by God's word, we will learn to express ourselves in love—always the perfect response.

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19-20; Mark 1:29-39 (307). "Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect."

Thursday, Jan 16, 2020 Close encounters Leprosy was considered contagious at the time of Jesus. Fol-lowing the Mosaic Law, anybody who touched a leper would be banned from society. That’s why Jesus encourages those he heals to keep quiet. But good news demands to be shared. The good word gets around. Encounters with the Lord are like that. You’ve just got to tell somebody! What’s your en-counter story?

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Samuel 4:1-11; Mark 1:40-45 (308). “He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.”

Friday, Jan 17, 2020 MEMORIAL OF ANTHONY, ABBOT Let’s get our priorities right How ironic that Saint Anthony of Egypt, a hermit who sought solitude in the desert, would attract the very crowds he was trying to escape. But attract he did—not just admirers who sought advice but disciples who wanted to attain Anthony’s same degree of serene single-mindedness for the gospel. Thus some of the first monastic communities formed, teaching ad-herents to be solitary while also communal, requiring they eschew the trappings of “living in the world.” The point of monastic spirituality, after all, is an intentional focus on God’s reign rather than the passing preoccupations of the world. How will you seek the reign of God today—can you trust in God instead of the “ways of the world”?

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Samuel 8:4-7, 10-22a; Mark 2:1-12 (309). “It is not you they reject, they are rejecting me as their king.”

Saturday, Jan 18, 2020 May we all be one Every year on this day Christians in the Northern Hemisphere officially begin the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity—an observance lasting eight days, strategically placed between two significant dates for the larger Christian Church. The week begins on the feast of the Confession of Saint Peter, on Janu-ary 18, and concludes with the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul on January 25. Begun in 1908 as the Octave for Christian Unity—and heavily promoted by the Graymoor Franciscan Friars, as it still is today—the week promotes pray-er to sustain the ecumenical spirit of the worldwide Christian Church. Consider some ways you can pray with and for those of other denominations who also love Christ. Embrace the words that Jesus prayed in John 17:21—that “they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You.”

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Samuel 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1a; Mark 2:13-17 (310). “There were many who followed him.”

St. Gianna &

Pietro Molla

Gianna & Pietro

struggled with

the usual

difficulties that

come with

marriage and

family life: illness

in the family,

exhaustion, education, work and

finances. But in all their difficulties,

Gianna and Pietro lived the virtues of

faith, hope, and charity, trusting in the

loving plan of God for their lives.

Their love letters clearly show how

devoted they were to each other, and

above all how devoted they were to

getting each other and their little

family to heaven.
