Mo-Ark Prevailed

“Mother Nature” thought she was

going to upstage Mid-Winter. Boy was

she in for a surprise!!!

The leaves gave way to snowflakes, ice

droplets, and cold! It is nice, pretty....and traveling is not rec-

ommended unless by sled dog!

Thanks to Les Mace, his committee, and the Ramada for a

great Mid-Winter.

During the week end, Kiwanians heard from Past Kiwanis

International President Dave Curry on ELIMINATE. Jerry

Martin and his team of “go getters” gathered $692.80 from sel-

ing bears, $1,230 from the basket raffle....saving 1,068 moth-

ers. And five new Zellers were added, which will save 3,470

more mothers. Awesome job Mo-Ark!

Kevin Dean, our Kiwanis International Trustee/Counselor

gave Mo-Ark some ideas and suggestions on growth! We are

on the upside…..but cannot let our efforts slow down or even

come to a halt! Remember WE are in growth together and do

not have to tackle this problem by ourselves. We have great

people in all regions of Mo-Ark ready to help. One just has to

ask…..Gary Warner, David Green….they will help you identify

a club builder/mentor in your area. Speaking of building or

growth….we have added several new Key Clubs, Builders, K-

Kids, and Circle K clubs!

And in closing, just in case you missed Mid-Winter…..there

were some informative forums….something for everyone. The

entertainment was “Out of This World.” Start making plans

now for the District Convention in Springfield. FYI…..at the

Convention, the Eliminate Walk is planning a comeback.

We Dealt With Real Winter at Mid-Winter

Five new Zeller Fellow Awards were presented at Mid-Winter: Marie (and Forrest)Priest, Jeff Hartman, Joanna Williams, Jack Austin, and Lyndal Waits.

The 2014 Mo-Ark Mid-WinterConference was held at the RamadaOasis Hotel in Springfield, Mo., onFebruary 28 and March 1. Even thethreat of ice and snow could not keep220 Kiwanians and their guests fromattending but many had to leave early.An Eliminate Basket Raffle and an“Adopt a Bear” project were held dur-ing the conference which raised$1,923. Silent auction netted $750.Five new Walter Zeller Fellows wererecognized, raisingthe total number ofMo-Ark ZellerFellowships to 175.Entertainment wasgreat, with theCaduceus Band onFriday night and theCentral High ChoirSaturday night.Complete report later.

The Kiwanis Club of Ozark Coast(Mo.) and the Christmas for KidsCommittee, both serving the Lake area,donated checks totaling $4900 toCitizens Against Domestic Violence.

The Carrollton (Mo.) Kiwanis Clubhad 18 Terrific Kids riding on theirfloat in the Christmas Parade. Theclub is in its fifth year of giving a verynice dictionary to every third grader inthe county. Their Key Clubbers havebeen working with Spring Manor andFive Acres once a week in the eveningplaying board games and basketball.

The Palmyra (Mo.) Kiwanis Club’schili, cooked by Ken Holstine, tooksecond place at the Christmas inPalmyra Chili Cookoff.

The Kiwanis Club of Columbia-Boonslick recently donated $736 toHabitat for Humanity towards a hotwater heater and high efficiency wash-er for their “Net Zero” home. TheirKey Club at Rock Bridge High Schoolhas raised $1,228 towards theEliminate Project. Twelve of theBoonslick members participated in atwo-hour survey at the Missouri Dept.

with the Kiwanians, and received a bigbag full of gifts from the club. Manyclub members volunteered to helpwith the Ozarks Literacy CouncilPizza Bowl fundraiser. This club putsup and takes down flags at three localshopping centers on National Holidays.

Every month, almost every TerrificKid parent, helps Bentonville (Ark.)Kiwanis celebrate their “Terrific Kid.”Parents always bring a “nutritious”lunch – like pizza, or somethingequally as nutritious for our celebra-tion. And it IS a CELEBRATION. Allthe Terrific Kids, and their parents,

wear a “crazy hat” and share a place-mat with something to color or a puz-zle to solve. Parents are told there isonly one rule to follow, “today is yourkid’s day.”

Union (Mo.) Kiwanians workedwith the United Bank of Union to helpneedy families in the Union area atChristmas time. The Union SchoolDistrict provides the bank with thenames of needy families and children

and also ages and clothingsizes. People in the localcommunity — along withKiwanis Club members —purchase gifts for the chil-dren. This year 62 familieswere served; 150 childrenreceived a minimum of threegifts and each family receivedtwo hams and a gift certifi-cate from the Pasta Housefor a spaghetti dinner.

The Fayetteville (Ark.)Metro Kiwanis Club is host-ing a K-Kids and TerrificKids program each month at

the Fayetteville Boys and Girls Club.The K-Kids at Cavanaugh

Elementary School, sponsored by theFort Smith (Ark.) CommissaryKiwanis Club, recently held a workday at Cavanaugh Community Park.On Feb. 8 Commissary Kiwanis hadtheir first Bowl-A-Rama fundraiser andit was a big success.

Each month the South County-St. Louis Kiwanis Clubhonors “Outstanding Students” from area schoolsalong with their parents. Each student receives a cer-tificate of recognition and gift cards to local stores.

The Thanksgiving Day Dinner sponsored by the Huntsville (Ark.) Kiwanis Club was abig success and included some visitors from the Springdale Kiwanis Club.

The Jefferson City (Mo.) Kiwanis K-KidsClub held a shoe drive at their school forthe Shoeman Water Project—where oldshoes can help fund clean water.

Mo-Ark Division 9 presented the prize ofan all-expense trip to be with the Card-inals in Florida. Proceeds from the rafflewent to the ELIMINATE Project.

North Kansas City Kiwanians take pride inmaking their special chili each year.

This student is looking over the dictionary shejust received from North Kansas City Kiwanis.

The “Supplies for Soldiers” campaign organized by the Union High School Key Clubwas a huge success! Approximately 32 boxes were sent to 17 lucky soldiers (sta-tioned in the U. S. and overseas). Boxes contained snacks and many other appreciat-ed items donated by Union High School students, staff, and Union Kiwanis members.

City (Mo.) donated $2,500 to theSamaritan Center for the agency’sChristmas efforts. The Jefferson CityK-Kids Club held a shoe drive at theirschool for the Shoeman Water Project.Old shoes are recycled or resold incountries that do not have access toclean water. Money from the shoes isused to dig wells and add purificationsystems in places like Kenya, South

America, and Haiti. The EastElementary K-Kids collected 198 pairsof usable shoes.

The Kiwanis Club of Gravois (Mo.)presented the winning prize of a tripfor two to Cardinals spring training.The prize package included: round tripairfare, reception and dinner withCardinal players, game tickets, twonights hotel, rental car and a $500 giftcard for incidentals. The winning

ticket was drawn during the morningnews program on KSDK TV by newsanchor Pat McGonigle. The luckyprize winner was Bill Sigmund of St.Louis, Mo. The raffle was conductedby Division 9 of the Missouri-Arkansas District as a fundraiser forthe “ELIMINATE Project.” The pro-ceeds from this event will save thelives of more than 3000 babiesworldwide.
