Lent Begins

Over the course of the previous month of February (the month of love) we have covered some readings in our regular Sunday worship services that talk about our works. Whether we are talking about obeying the law or doing good works, the words of Jesus and the Apostle Paul tell us we need to be cognizant of our actions. Lent starts at the beginning of March, and during Lent we, as Christians, usually take this time of year to

reflect upon our failure to obey the law and to do good works, which led Christ into his act of Passion. His suffering was a result of our inability to fulfill God’s law. While this is a time in the Church year that somberness dominates our worship life, it is also a time that we can take great hope. “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight.” (Romans 3:20) Our inability to obey the law won’t keep us from being justified and welcomed into heaven. We “are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:24) This grace that we are offered through Christ is truly good news that gives us great hope. So while you are reflecting about the passion of Christ this Lenten season, and remembering how your actions caused His suffering, don’t forget that Jesus accepted this willingly. He suffered for you because He loves you and wants you to be with Him in heaven forever. This is how our God demonstrates love. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Therefore, even while we reflect upon our sins that led to His suffering and death, we worship during this Lenten season in great joy and hope because He offered to do this for us willingly out of love.

In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf

“Happy 75th Anniversary LWML” – Organized in 1942, July 7-8. The meeting at St. Stephen’s Church, Chicago, marked the culmination of many years of waiting and praying on the part of Lutheran women all over the country. Twenty-eight (28) women representing 15 districts, were present as delegates and 100 visitors for the 2-day period. Mrs. Otto F. Schmitt was elected as a president.

The selection of a name for the new organization was the most controversial matter to come before the convention. There were some who insisted on the inclusion of the word “Missionary” to identify the objective of the organization, others favored a shorter name. Balloting showed 15 in favor and 10 opposed. The original motion, with the amendment, was unanimously adopted, making the Official name “Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.” “The league emblem…” – at the 1943 convention a request was made for a league emblem. At the 1947 convention Mrs. Quin Dennis of Huron, South Dakota designed the chosen emblem. It contained the open Bible, the Cross and the letters of LWML, enclosed in three circles, graduated in size. It was in 1951 that the Executive Board adopted purple and gold as the official colors of the league.

Our wonderful “Lutheran Women’s Quarterly” will also celebrate the 75th anniversary in December. In March 1939 the St. Louis Lutheran Women’s League published “The Luther Woman”, an 8-page Quarterly publication. This was continued until December 1942, when it was replaced by the “Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly”. Over the years our Quarterly has risen from 16 to 20 pages, to 24 pages in 1947 to use the back page for advertising purposes.

(Excerpts from Women on a Mission)

“Gants” – Mission Grants – In 2015 the voting body at the 36th Biennial LWML Convention accepted a challenge and voted to fund 19 mission projects and voted to raise $2,000,000.00 that was the challenge and today 16 grants are paid in full with 3 remaining to be paid. Maybe just a few extra dimes or pennies in our “Mite Boxes” would help the rest of the grants. “Mission Impossible?” Not to the women on a mission for the Lord. Truly, if the women of the LWML are on a “Mission for the Lord” to the whole man, to the whole society, in the whole world.

I am no longer Dead…But alive, No longer helpless…But Helpful,

No longer worthless…But worthwhile, No longer needing to be served…But living to serve.

Evangelism Board

Caring for Kids

Caring for Kids is an organization that encourages a partnership of civic, church and business volunteers within the area of each school that is to be helped. Each school group looks for ways to be helpful to the children and teachers. Spring

Valley Elementary has over 400 children enrolled. About 80% of these enrolled qualify for free or reduced price lunches.

Last year, an employee of United Consumers Credit Union and Wal-Mart worked to provide 2 bicycles each quarter. The students with perfect attendance and no tardy marks had their names placed in a bowl from which the 2 winners were drawn. The program has been continued this year. Attendance at school has improved. Last year homemade hats for children and crocheted bookmarks for school employees were presented in December. This year the children could shop for a new coat or jacket.

WATCH DOGS

WATCH DOGS (Dads Of Great Students) is particularly important to the children because it provides a male role model them. Currently there are 16 men involved providing at least 2 hours a week. Any potential volunteer must submit to a background check provided by the School District. Talk to Bob Gilham if you are interested in volunteering.

Candy Land Family Night

The next event at Spring Valley Elementary is “Candy Land Family Night” on March 23. Look for the poster for the opportunity to help with refreshments or a game. We will pick up any donations in the morning of Tuesday, March 21st If you have questions contact the Evangelism Board Representatives: Bob and Lois Gilham 816-920-1477

THE SEASON OF LENT IS ONE OF THOUGHTFUL REFLECTION. LENT IS WHEN WE TURN OUR EYES TO THE CROSS. IT IS THERE

WHERE JESUS, THE SINLESS SON OF GOD, SUFFERED THE INDIGNITY AND SHAME OF DYING FOR OUR SINS. AND IT IS THERE

WHERE GOD’S WRATH WAS SATISFIED BY HIS BELOVED SON’S SUPREME SACRIFICE, WINNING SALVATION FOR ALL WHO

CALL HIM THEIR SAVIOR.

Book Club By Adam Haslett

From a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, a fiercely intimate story of a family facing the ultimate question: how far will we go to save the people we love the most? When Margaret’s fiancé, John, is hospitalized for depression in 1960s London, she faces a choice: carry on with their plans despite what she now knows of his condition, or back away from the suffering it may bring her. She decides to marry him. Imagine Me Gone is the unforgettable story of what unfolds from this act of love and faith. At the heart of it is their eldest son, Michael, a

brilliant, anxious music fanatic, who makes sense of the world through parody, and the story of how, over the span of decades, his younger siblings—the savvy and responsible Celia, and the ambitious and tightly controlled Alec—struggle with their mother to care for Michael’s increasingly troubled and precarious existence. Told in alternating points of view by all five members of the family, this searing, gut-wrenching, and yet frequently hilarious novel brings alive with remarkable depth and poignancy the love of a mother for her children, the often inescapable devotion siblings feel toward one another, and the legacy of a father’s pain in the life of a family With his striking emotional precision and lively, inventive language, Adam Haslett has given us something rare: a novel with the power to change how you see the most important people in your life.

Sewing Bee

We’ve Got Four! We Need More!

Hope this little Rah! Rah! got your attention, as the ladies in the Monday quilting group could really use some help!! It’s a little hard to turn out over a hundred quilts a year with such a small group as they had this last Monday, even if they are dynamo workers! If you need some encouragement to join or questions answered about quilting, just talk with

Dorily Miller, Norma Whitaker, Helen Sunderland or Julia Kleeschulte. They will most assuredly give you the low down on how your willingness is more important than your talent. You know the old saying: “The more, the merrier.” Also, “Many hands make light the task.” Help make the task lighter and merrier!

“The Lutheran Hour”

It is God’s mission to rescue people who have become separated from Him, restore relationships with them and renew them for holy living and service to others. His message is simple: rescue, restoration and renewal are found only in Jesus.

In a world now characterized by dizzying change, God has called the Church to join Him in His mission and challenged it to make His message of hope known in today’s post-Christian culture. The Lutheran Hour was founded 100 years ago in 1917 to bring this message to the world. On a weekly basis, Rev. Gregory Setlz brings Christ to the nations via The Lutheran Hour radio broadcast. These broadcasts are to 50+ countries and have more than 51 million worldwide weekly listeners. Here in the Kansas City metropolitan listening area, The Lutheran Hour can be found on KCMO 103.7 FM and 710 AM at 8:00 am on Sunday morning. An 8:30 am broadcast can also be accessed on radio station KCCV 101.5 FM. When you find yourself sick and not at Peace, tune in to one of these stations and hear the encouraging message of Christ. Why not share this great offering with a neighbor or relative? KCMO 103.7 FM 8:00 am KCMO 710 AM 8:00 am KCCV 101.5 FM 8:30 am
