Branch Committee Meeting Highlights
by Don MacQueen, Chair, RSCDS-SF Branch Committee
The last two Branch Committee meetings, December and Janu-
ary, have been relatively unexciting. I guess that's good! We have
been thinking about who among our members deserves to be rec-
ognized at the May AGM with a Certificate of Appreciation from
the Branch. If you have any suggestions please let Sharon Stewart
(as Recording Secretary) know. We have paid our annual insur-
ance bill, and gratefully accepted Meg Lindley as our new Insur-
ance Coordinator, succeeding Kathy Allen (many thanks,
Kathy!). We also have paid our annual membership fees to
RSCDS Headquarters.
The Branch Scholarship Committee reported that in 2009, they, along with the Asilomar Committee, went out and actively sought
people who would not be attending due to the recession's effect
on their finances. Finding that Asilomar attendance was unusually
low, and knowing that there was a large surplus in funding for
scholarships, the committees encouraged these members to apply
for scholarships to Asilomar, believing that this would be a good
and sensible use of Branch resources. Over the last five years,
there have been about 35 scholarships granted for a collective
total of a little over $9000. This was of course possible due only
to our collective generosity to the scholarship funds.
Speaking of the May AGM, we need you to think about whether you would like to join the Branch Committee, as one of the main
purposes of the annual general meeting is to elect Branch Com-
mittee members. We are continuing to review the Branch bylaws
for possible updates. For example, we need to bring terminology
referring to the RSCDS Teaching Certificate up to date. We could
also do with some updates to reflect the use of "modern" commu-
nication technologies, e.g., email and the web. We had originally
targeted this year's AGM for a vote on the updates by the mem-
bership, but now 2013 looks more likely. This would make it an
even 10 years since the last updates in 2003.
Gary Thomas, Branch Registrar, sends a warm welcome to eight
new Branch members who joined toward the end of 2011. See you on the dance floor! We also note with sadness the passing in
late January of Branch member, Berkeley Class dancer, and
Branch Committee member Polly Paterson, from an evidently
fast-moving cancer. We'll miss you, Polly.
Happy 50th Anniversary Sid and Susie
by Donna Weidenfeller
Susie Langdon
Kass and Sid Kass
celebrated their
50th wedding anni-
versary in January.
Most of our read-
ers know them; as
a dance partner,
teacher, volunteer,
or someone with
whom to have a lively conversa-
tion. Both have
given much to our branch and for more years than I know! Susie
was my first teacher and has taught many dancers in our branch,
some who started in her children's class. Many of her students have
become dance teachers, demonstration team members, as well as
avid Scottish Country dancers. Sid and Susie started folk dancing
together which led to their interest in Scottish Country dancing as
well as English Country dancing.
Our class celebrated with them during a recent social class event.
Of course we had a lovely cake from Susie and goodies from class members. In the spirit of their long time generosity to our class
they treated us by paying for our class dues for this evening.
As a memento for them, Tim Wilson devised a dance with a for-
mation of interlocking hearts. The dance, named Hearts Entwined,
was demonstrated by members of the class. Tim taught the dance to
the rest of us with Sid and Susie as our “first couple”! Patti Cobb
and David Strong provided live music. This truly was a special
evening for all of us. Congratulations Susie and Sid. We look for-
ward to seeing you on the dance floor.
"Dance, then, wherever you may be..."

How To Get There:
ALAMEDA MASONIC TEMPLE
(between Park and Oak Streets).
FROM THE SOUTH: Take 880
North, exit at High Street (south of the
Bay Bridge) and drive west across the
High Street bridge into Alameda. Con-
tinue on High Street for about six
blocks and turn right on Central Ave-
nue. Go for another 10 blocks to Park
Street (with traffic light, past Park Ave-
nue). Turn left on Park Street, go one
block and turn right on Alameda Ave-
nue. The Masonic Temple is on the left
about ½ block before Oak Street.
FROM THE NORTH: Take 880
South and exit at 23rd Avenue. When
you have crossed the bridge going west,
you will be on Park Avenue. Continue
on Park until you come to Alameda
Avenue and turn right. There is free
parking after 6:00 p.m. in a city lot
right across the street from the Temple,
but accessible only from Central Ave-
nue, one block east. You can turn right
from Alameda onto Oak, right on Cen-
tral and right into the lot, after about ½
block–or just drive straight across Park
the lot after about ½ block, and walk to
the Temple at the far end of the lot. The
party will be in the Banquet Room on
the fourth floor. There is an elevator.
APTOS GRANGE Heading south from the Bay Area,
take Highway 1 towards Aptos. Take
the Park Exit (Exit 436). Turn left on
Park Avenue. Turn right onto Soquel
Drive, and right again onto Mar Vista
Drive. The hall is on the right, identi-
fied by a small white sign, sitting back
from the road with a large parking lot in
front.
