The Importance of Scales
In livestock production, there are several tools that are used to raise and produce animals. Scales
can tell us more about how your livestock project is doing than any other piece of equipment.
There are two scales every livestock project should have available: scales for livestock and scales for
feed. Not everybody needs to own them, but you should find a set you can use or borrow. You do not
need to use livestock scales every day, but once a week, every two weeks or monthly can provide you
valuable information about how your animal is gaining (or not).
Small feed scales will help you track your feeding. You can weigh your feed daily, but I would
advise using the scales every time you make a change in your feed amounts.
So why are scales important beyond just giving you a weight for your animal or feed ration? The
information from these scales can be used to calculate important data to help you manage your livestock
project, like your animal’s daily rate of gain, feed efficiency and formulating for any medication you
need to give.
Leadership Development Conference is coming up fast! It will be held February 27th on a
virtual platform. The day will begin with a statewide meeting followed by a keynote speaker. After
the speaker, we will move into three workshops. One will be run by the State Shooting Sports Ambassadors.
The next will be run by half of the State 4-H Officers, where participants will learn more about parliamentary
procedure. The last will be run by the other half of the State 4-H Officers and will be centered around games
that can be played in a virtual setting to keep kids engaged. I am looking forward to seeing you all there!

What is a Quiz Bowl?
A quiz bowl is a team event for 4-H members where they test their knowledge of various
content matter on Livestock, Equine, or Family and Consumer Science topics. Each content area
will how their own individual quiz bowl contest at the Colorado State 4-H Conference members use a
buzzer to answer questions and the teams compete in a double elimination format by providing oral
answers to questions presented by a moderator. This fast paced and exciting contest challenges the team
members to know about their subject area and to be able to
A QUICK LOOK ATCOOL PROJECT!
ROBOTICS
This project has two components, depending on skill level and resources available. Junk drawer
robotics focus on creating simple robots with items found around the house. The Robotics Platform looks
atkits that members will assemble and program to perform a specific set of commands.
In lower units, you will create simple robots such as a catapult or mechanical hand. Advancing
through the units will teach you skills such as building higher level robots that can hear, see, and sense
obstacles. They will be able to perform tasks such as completing an obstacle course!
A fair project would be a display board that shows off some of the processes or skills you learned
about. You could also bring a robot you have built and you will be able to show the judges what skills your
robot can do!

Details for the 2021 Wild Bug Fish Camp are still in
progress. We are beginning to plan and work out the
health safety for camp. Activities will include fishing,
outdoor skills training, wildlife management, rangeland
ecology and management and a community service
project. Check with the Extension Office later in the
spring for more details.
2021 State 4-H Conference
State 4-H Conference is being planned for this year.
Some contests will be held live and other things virtual.
If you are interested in participating, contact Scott at the
Extension Office.

applications are now available. The application deadline
is April 1st. For more information, go to:

Shooting Sports
4-H members in Shooting Sports must complete
Hunter’s Education before participating in any 4-H
shooting activities and must attend the Safety Training
on Sunday March 7th, 1:30pm at the Burlington Gun
Club. (Location may change if COVID status changes).
If you have any questions, contact Scott at the Extension
Office.
Meat Quality Assurance (MQA)
The Kit Carson County MQA certification program
will take place Monday, April 12th from 3 to 8 p.m. at
the Burlington Community Center. The training
should take approximately one hour to complete, so
please arrive no later than 7 p.m. Kit Carson County will
host only one MQA training. If members are unable to
attend locally, they need to contact Scott.
All livestock exhibitors are required to attend Meat
Quality Assurance training during the first two years of
being enrolled in a livestock project, regardless of age.
Also, members must attend when they reach age 12 and
again at age 15. If you are required to attend an MQA
program this year you will receive a letter in March.
Please call Jean at the office, 346-5571, if you have any
questions.
Junior KCC Fair Superintendents
There are still some openings for Junior Fair
Superintendents. Please contact Jean in the Extension
Office as soon as possible.
KCC Fair Market Sheep Weigh-in
Sheep weigh-in will take place at the fairgrounds,
Monday, May 17th from 3:30 to 6 p.m. A weigh-in fee
of $5 per head is due at the time of weigh-in. All
members must weigh their market lambs at this time in
order to be eligible to show and sell at the Kit Carson
County Fair, no exceptions!
KCC Fair Market Swine & Goat Nominations
Market swine and goat projects will not be weighed-
in prior to the fair. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor
to nominate their own animals in order to be eligible to
show and sell at the Kit Carson County Fair. Exhibitors
must complete a nomination form, as well as tag and
photograph each animal. A total of three color
photographs per animal must be submitted − two profile
photographs (one of each side) and one close-up
photograph of the animal's ear tag (the tag number must
be legible). Swine exhibitors must also indicate the
animal's ear notches on the nomination form.
Nomination forms and ear tags are available at the
Extension Office. A fee of $5.00 per head must be paid
when the tags are picked up. Completed nomination
forms and photographs are due to the Extension Office
by Monday, May 17th at 5:00 p.m., no exceptions!
Spring Exhibit
Saturday, April 17th we will host a spring exhibit.
Entries do not have to be what exhibitors plan to enter at
fair but Food and Cake Decorating projects need practice
runs prior to fair. We will have interview judging for
these projects to get exhibitors comfortable talking about
their projects and answering questions. The goal of the
Spring Exhibit is to get ahead on the test runs for fair
projects and to ease nerves while getting comfortable
talking with a judge, and practicing modeling their
garments.

Project Manuals Please order all manuals through the Extension Office. We
will not automatically be ordering manuals this year so if
you would like one, please be sure to call and let us know.
Add/Drop Deadline The deadline for 4-H members to add or drop a project is
May 15th. Members are encouraged to give serious
consideration to the projects they are enrolled in. 4-H
members must complete a record book and the exhibit
requirements for each project they are enrolled in.
General projects will also participate in interview judging.
Projects that do not meet these requirements are
incomplete. Incomplete projects go on the member’s
record and count against the overall completion of their 4-
H club. Also, you will not be able to re-enroll in that
project again during the next 4-H year. 4-H members are
required to complete at least one project during the 4-H
year. Now is the time to review your projects and
consider the time and expense it will take to complete
each project. If you feel you are not going to be able to
complete one or more of the projects you are enrolled in
please call the Extension Office and visit with your club
leader about your concerns. Those of you who think you
may want to try another project that you have not yet
enrolled in should also visit with your club leader or call
the Extension office. You will want to add any new
projects by May 15th to be eligible to participate with that
project at the Phillips County Fair. To add or drop projects
please call or email the Extension Office at 970-854-3616

The Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) will be held in
person this year and the date for Phillips County will
be April 5, 4-7 pm at the Phillips County Event
Center. If it is your first or second year showing a
new livestock species, you are required to take the
MQA. You also must take it if you are 12 years old
or 15 years old. Postcards will be mailed to
individuals that are required to take the MQA. Please
watch your email and the Facebook page for updates.
Livestock projects that require MQA training include:
beef, sheep, swine, goats, rabbits, and poultry. If you
haven’t met this requirement by June 10, 2021, you
will not be eligible to show at fair. For anyone
interested in showing at national shows or out-of-
state shows, double check the show’s Meat Quality
requirements. At this point, the Colorado State Fair
is still accepting our current MQA program to meet
their requirements. Please contact the Extension
Office with questions.
Market Livestock Weight Ranges Swine: 230-300; Lamb: 100-160; Goat: 55-110; Beef:
1000-1500; Poultry: Broilers/fryers, 3-6 lbs; Roasters, 6
lbs. minimum
Livestock Judging Have you ever attended a livestock show and
wondered why the judge placed the animals in a
certain order? Or maybe you heard the judge giving
oral reasons for his or her placing and asked yourself,
“Where did the judge learn to talk like that?” One
area of 4-H that teaches 4-H members about livestock
selection and evaluation is 4-H Livestock Judging
Teams. Phillips County is fortunate enough to have
four livestock judging coaches and they are very
excited about the upcoming judging season.
Livestock judging is open to any currently enrolled 4-
H member; you do not have to be enrolled in a
livestock project to participate on the livestock
judging team! Practices are being held Tuesday
evenings starting at 6 p.m. in the Ortner Room at the
Event Center.
Shooting Sports Shooting sports members: it’s time to start thinking
about shooting sports practices! Watch your email
inboxes, mailboxes, and the Phillips County
Extension Facebook page to find out when your
practice starts and where it will be held.
Swine ID Swine identification for 2021 will be online (there is
no market swine weigh-in). You will still need to
pick up ear tags and taggers, which will be available
in the Extension office starting April 1st. Members
will need to tag their pigs, take pictures of both sides
of the pig and a picture of the pig’s ear with the tag in
place. You will then go online to complete the ID
sheet and upload and attach your pictures. To
complete your online ID, go to 4HOnlineand follow
the directions that will be given to you when you pick
up your tags. All ID’s are due Monday, May 3. No
Exceptions! Please call the Extension Office with any
questions.
Project Mentors/Leaders We are currently seeking project leaders or project
resource leaders for many projects. This is a great
opportunity to help the youth of Phillips County learn
new skills. If you or someone you know would be
interested in mentoring youth, please call the
Extension Office to learn how you can become more
involved.
Display Boards and Record Covers The Extension Office has display boards (show
boards) and green record book covers available for
$3.00 each.
Record Book and Project Requirements It’s not too early to start thinking about your project’s
requirements and record books! Electronic record
books for all projects are available online. Go to:
http:// co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/ for your
livestock and general project record books. If you are
enrolled in a general project, it is a very good idea to
read through the State Fair Exhibit Requirements for
your project; these are the requirements you will be
judged on in Phillips County. To find your project
requirements, go to:
http://www.co4h.colostate.edu/statefair/StateFairExhi
bitReq.pdf.

4-H Council Pancake Supper Reimagined
This year’s Pancake Supper will be
a chili and cinnamon roll feed! We
will be holding it drive through
style. There will
be a location in
Julesburg and in Sedgwick. Be sure
to check your mail for the schedule
and keep up to date with the
Facebook page.
Manual Orders
Project Manuals are crucial to successfully
completing a project. They can take into account
different aspects you may not have thought of when
doing your project. There have been a couple of
changes this year, the Horse manual has been
updated, all horse members and horseless horse
project members will need new manuals. Home
Design and Décor manuals will replace the Home
Environment manuals. To help members get the most
from their projects, we are asking the club leaders to
collect the orders for 4-H project manuals from their
membership. Literature orders are due to the
Extension office no later than May 14th, 2021 to give
some time after the add/drop deadline. However I
will be making an early bird order on March 19th,
2021. The Extension Office will order the literature
and bill individual 4-H clubs for all members’
purchases. Members will need to reimburse their
clubs for this expense. Rena will be sending each
club leader a report stating which members have
indicated they would like to order manuals. Please
double check this information with your club
members and then complete the literature order form.

MQA Training
The Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) date for
Sedgwick County will be Sunday, April 14th, 3:30-
7:30 p.m. at the Sedgwick County Fairgrounds. If
you are new to a 4-H livestock project, you are
required to participate in the training the first two
years of your project. You will need to re-certify
when you are 12 and again when you are 15. Swine
members will no longer have a separate requirement
for when they have to come to MQA, they will need
to attend as outlined above. Livestock projects that
require MQA training include: beef, sheep, swine,
goats, rabbits, and poultry. We will be sending out
postcards to those who need to attend this year’s
session. If you haven’t met this requirement by June
18, 2020, you will NOT be eligible to show at fair.
Contact the Extension Office with any questions.
Add/Drop Deadline
The deadline for members to add or drop a project is
April 30th, 2021 Members should give each project
that are enrolled in serious consideration. 4-H
members are required to complete at least one project
during the 4-H year. Now is the time to review you
projects and consider the time and expense it will
take to complete each project. If you feel you are not
going to be able to complete one or more of the
projects or, if you think you may want to try another
project that you have not yet enrolled in you are
enrolled in please call the Extension Office or visit
with your club leader about your concerns. You will
want to add or drop any new projects by April 30th to
be eligible to participate with that project at the
Sedgwick County Fair at the end of July. The
add/drop forms are available at the Extension Office.
Record Book and Project Requirements
It’s never too early to start thinking about your
project’s requirements and record books! Electronic
record books for general projects are available online
at http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/projects/e-
records-general/. It is a great idea to read through the
State Fair Exhibit Requirements for your general
project; these are the requirements you will be judged
on in Sedgwick County. If you are enrolled in a
livestock project, Sedgwick County had a different
record book. You will be judged on these and not the
ones found online so please make sure to stop in the
office and grab one or talk to your club leader.

Bowl. This was a virtual knowledge bowl on the topic
of beekeeping. The event was planned and conducted
by Leigh Sabey, the Beekeeping project leader from El
Paso County.
Jefferson, is just starting his second
year in the project. He had many correct
answers and ranked 5th overall; and
earned the first-place prize for Juniors
(8-10 years). And most of all,
Jefferson had fun and met 4-H members from several
counties who are also taking the Beekeeping project.

1. First 2 years taking a livestock project,
regardless of age
2. Age 12 and Age 15 (Age as of Dec 31, 2020)

completed as you explore the stations. The program
will be open from 4-7 p.m. but plan to arrive before

requirements. YQCA testing cannot be used in place
of these MQA requirements.

What can you do for 4-H in
March and April?
These early spring months are perfect for working on
your 4-H projects. Take advantage of your one day
a week without school or spring break week from
school or an occasional snow day! Read your 4-H
project manuals and your project fair exhibit
requirements. You can find it under the
Colorado 4-H State Fair Information:

Do some online research for your project, if needed.
Now is the time to get ideas and supplies for your
project. Many of you don’t have a project leader and
monthly project meetings. So, it’s up to you and your
family (and head club leader) to learn new skills.
There are many people who post “how to” videos on
YouTube, or other video hosting sites, where you
can watch lessons and practice new skills.
Plan and prepare your project demonstrations! Give
your project demonstration to your club; or the
Extension agents can make arrangement for Zoom
meetings for demonstrations, if needed.
Make some practice items to improve your skills
before starting on your fair exhibit item. Some
project, like Cake Decorating, require you to make
and report on four cakes in your record book before
the fair exhibit cake. Nearly every project, like
sewing, leathercraft and woodworking, encourages
you to make additional items.
Get started on your record books. Complete the
pages you can, and find out what other information
you will need to gather in order to complete your
record book before Interview Judging Day.
Do a community service project. Your club should
have already planned a group service project. If not,
look around the community and talk to people about
possible service projects you and your club can do.
4-H members are always welcome to do additional
service actions related to your projects, like kids in
Foods projects can share extra baked products with
an elderly or ill neighbor or friend.

Quiz Bowl Teams We are looking for members to participate in Home
Economics, Livestock, and Horse Quiz Bowl teams.
This process is similar to a knowledge bowl where you
are asked questions and the first team to answer correctly
gets the point. We will practice and then have our
competition at the State 4-H Conference in June. Please
call the Extension office if you would like to participate
in this event.
Donated Breeding Heifers Breeding heifers will be donated to several exhibitors in
the Junior Beef Breeding show at the 2021 Yuma
County Fair. Intentions are to randomly draw a name
out of exhibitors following the breeding show at the fair.
The winner of the heifer must be eligible to show at the
2022 fair, and must show the donated heifer in that
show. Before accepting the heifer, the exhibitor must
declare they have the facilities and means to care for the
heifer for the year. The heifer will come from
established Breeders in Yuma County and all sponsored
by the Yuma County Cattleman’s Association, and other
area ranchers. For more information, contact JoLynn
Midcap at the Extension office in Wray.

that you will use for all General and Home Ec projects.
Hard copies of all of this information can also be picked
up at the Extension office.
Display Boards Project display boards are available for you at the
Extension office for $3.00 each. P.S. These are also
great for the science fair and other school projects!
Swine Information Swine members, leaders, or designated individuals
within 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters will need to come
to the Extension office and pick up ear tags and
nomination information. Nomination forms will have
instructions for tagging and taking photos of your swine
projects. The tags may be picked up after April 1, 2021
with completed nomination forms returned to the
Extension office no later than Monday, May 3, 2021.
The weight range of all market swine eligible to show in
the market show is 230 lbs. to 290 lbs. Just a reminder
that all swine must have ear notches. Any un-notched
pig will be disqualified.
WEIGH-IN UPDATE Last year the Yuma County Fairboard board voted to
allow a family animal to be weighed in at the beef, sheep
and goat weigh ins and for swine nominations. Each
member will need to weigh in at least 1 animal in their
name and then add an additional family animal that can
be transferred to any family member and can be shown
under that name. The family animal will need to be
designated at weigh in as a family animal and then, at
the pre-entry deadline on July 23, all animals will need
to be identified in one members name. You still may
only bring 4 animals to the Yuma County Fair.
New this year, the Colorado State Fair is allowing
DNA nominations. You should have received an email
with details, but contact the Extension Office with any
questions or clarifications. A premise ID is required at
the Colorado State Fair.
IMPORTANT: Any animal that may be shown at the
Colorado State Fair must be weighed in/nominated in a
member’s individual name. If there is any chance that a
beef, lamb, goat, or pig will be shown at the Colorado
State Fair, DO NOT ENTER IT be entered as a family
animal.

MQA Certification/Recertification Workshops
Public confidence in our meat products is extremely important to the success of the livestock industry. Youth livestock projects play
an important role in building or losing the trust of our consumers. It is important that youth livestock exhibitors exceed the standard in
producing quality, defect-free livestock for our consumers. In the past, a very small number of exhibitors have given youth livestock
shows a bad name by using unethical and unsafe techniques to “win at all cost.” As a result, we have implemented a strong Meat
Quality Assurance program in Colorado. Through the MQA workshops youth learn ethics and good production practices needed to
produce a high quality, desirable product for the American Consumer. If you need to attend this year, you will be notified by your
county Extension office prior to the workshop.
You have the option to test out of the workshop at 12 and 15 years of age but it is highly recommended to attend a workshop instead.
The workshops allow for hands on learning and experience. For those of you that participated last year, it will be the same layout.
There will be different stations pertaining to the 10 Good Production practices set up at each location and you will have the chance to
observe and learn with real supplies and equipment. You will have the opportunity to come any time during the listed period as long
as you are able to participate at each station. Allow yourself one hour. The following chart explains when and where the workshops
will be. Keep in mind that dates and/or times and locations are subject to change so stay posted and be sure to call your local
Extension office if you have any questions.
