Marcus R. Pullen is a graphic artist and writer who has worked for a range of TV, film, game and corporate clients

I have been an active gamer since the early 80’s my first computer being a Commodore Vic20 and playing Horace goes Skiing. I have played in tournaments and very lucky to have played with John Romero (one of the original developers of Doom) in person - in London, when I was working on PC Zone Games magazine for Dennis Publishing.

In 2001 I helped setup Aspin Interactive which services customers in the UK and USA developing online applications, while continuing to develop art for comics, conventions and promoting movies and games.

I am currently working with a team on a new comic and my own SF novel and scripts.

backgroundI studied art and graphic design at the prestigious Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design in the UK. I then went to study Media design at the University of Portsmouth. I got seriously into computer art in the early 90s and ended up working for IBM designing multimedia applications.

Since that time I’ve been working in all aspects of the computer Industry. From producing multimedia CDROMs for a range of customers including NewsCorp, HMV, Castle Rock Entertainment, developing websites for TV including ITV, and I spent three years producing and writing for News Stand titles such as PC Zone, PC Pro and Maxim. I speak about the Internet and computer technology and have appeared on Sky TV and the BBC. I write for movies and games features website Shadowlocked.com.

Story Development My debut Gothic SciFi Novel

creating storiesWhether working as an artist, writer or even a producer of multimedia, I’ve always been keen on developing the idea of telling a story in the work. After all, that’s the point of communication: the transference of ideas and emotions.

visually telling the storyI love suggesting and thinking about a story in a picture, from developing sketches, paintings - for me there needs to be something in an image or an idea that invites the viewer to ask more about what they are looking at.

developing an idea

“I wanted to think about what environments the character would be in during the story, and then worked backwards to dress her appropriately for each location”

getting under the skinTh is i s a cha rac te r concep t development for a multi-channel concept story.

Here the main character is suited with multiple layers of armor.

character development

developing the personI strive to always develop characters that are both believable and emotive. They should themselves drive the story and of course are the story themselves. I try to create characters that can be loved, hated or be inspiring but also be something or someone who leaves an impression on the reader or player, enticing them to come back for more; wanting to know about what happens to them or how the player can change their future.

worlds and environmentsThe built environment is something that I’ve looked at for both creating architectural visuals and for game levels. I’m intrigued by the concept of both game levels to be flowing spaces for game play but also to reflect believable social spaces, industrial landscapes that make sense and engage.

worlds and environments

ALIEN WORLDS THAT TELL STORIESFor me a landscape should not only be the stage for the characters, they should influence them. Environments can make a big difference to mood, pace and breadth of a story. The environs of a scene can illicit a wide range of emotions from the audience and can establish so much backstory - history or mystery.

vehicles

A vehicle is always more than a means of transport. I was lucky enough to work on an article with the renowned concept artist Syd Mead. He helped me to really think about the how the form and function of a vehicle drives emotions and story ideas.

Where ever I go I tend to write and draw. France is definitely a place I love to draw. Again I still want to get that idea of a story into my work. Who are the two people in the foreground? Do they live in the house? What’s the story?

sketch cardsI am a very proud support of the Chicagoland Entertainment Collectors Expo and the charity they support called the Treasure Chest Program.

The Chicagoland Entertainment Expo over the years has had a long list of special guests from the world of TV and Film entertainment. Previous guests have included Felix Silla (who was the man behind Buck Rogers’ indomitable sidekick Twiki and also Planet of the Apes fame), Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett in Star Wars episodes V and VI) and a host of well known actors and stunt people who have brought so many characters to life.

The Treasure Chest program allows cancer patients (ranging in age from birth through 18 years) at 37 children’s cancer treatment centers to choose an age appropriate toy as a reward for having the courage to undergo painful but necessary procedures.
